Listener comments!

  7:03pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Naught People!
  7:05pm
Nose:

Please pick me!
  7:05pm
Cliff:

Guys, you're off to a GREAT start.
  7:06pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Everyone picks their noes. I'm sure of this. I'm pretty sure there's some stuff you can't help but pick out of there. Blow and blow all you want, nothin' doin'. My personal rule is I wait until I was going to go to the restroom then do it in there, since I'm doing private business anyway.
  7:06pm
Ear:

I can hear that!
  7:07pm
Ass:

How about me? Any questions.
  7:10pm
Dark Knight Dan:

Tell us the truth NASA!!
  7:13pm
Caryn:

I don't know if my love for the early space missions will withstand this show. I might start screaming at my laptop at some point.
  7:14pm
Doug:

Soviet= workers council.
  7:15pm
Caryn:

“Soviet” is derived from a Russian word signifying council, advice, harmony, concord. It was a name generally used in Russian politics to refer to any political organization or council. More than 3 words, but there you go.
  7:15pm
Dan B From Upstate:

It's funny how much the people who enjoy this show love it, and how much the people who don't like it abhor it. There's no middle ground with this show.
  7:18pm
Caryn:

So, fellow comments board members: your favourite Mercury astronaut?
  7:18pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Loved Yeager's Air Combat growing up. Loved sawing down those bombers.
  7:19pm
joe:

soviet, i think literally translates as committee. but Doug has the context correct.
  7:20pm
mike:

play this Sandy!

  7:21pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Joe Flacco...
  7:26pm
Cliff:

Dan B: I used to think this show was pointless and always turned it off a few minutes in, but then I listened to the show last year where they had callers singing Christmas carols and I couldn't stop laughing...now I love it and listen every week!
  7:26pm
Dark Knight Dan:

''Know what I mean?'' ''Yeaaahh!'' haha
  7:28pm
mrmucho:

Best opening ever tonight.

I recently re-read "the right stuff", great book.
  7:29pm
Caryn:

NACA = National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics
  7:30pm
mrmucho:

Dave, check out Charles Murray's book about Apollo. It's an incredible story.
  7:37pm
Caryn:

I think over the years, Glenn ended up the only Mercury astronaut not to eventually get divorced. All the other marriages broke up.
  7:41pm
Caryn:

Okay, the first monkey they sent up was not a chimp, it was a rhesus macaque. Called Sam. Ham & Enos were the chimps sent up later.
  7:42pm
Bex:

I tuned in late. Why are they talking about the beginning of the space program?
  7:43pm
Caryn:

See, my NASA obsession is turning me into a total annoyance! I feared this would happen this week...
  7:43pm
Mike East:

Caryn, you should call in as an expert!
  7:44pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Not at all, Caryn! I'm learning!

Bex, tonight's topic is the mercury program.
  7:45pm
Mike East:

speaking of which, I'm having a Ham sandwich for dinner
  7:45pm
Caryn:

Ham's name is an acronym for the lab that prepared him for his historic mission, the Holloman Aerospace Medical Center.
  7:46pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Caryn, Do you have skype? That's how they used to take calls to the show. You should totally be an E.
  7:47pm
Caryn:

Actually, he was only named after he landed, just in case he died. When he went up, he was just No. 65.
  7:48pm
Cliff:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham_the_Chimp He lived until 1983!
  7:51pm
Caryn:

He was in a film with Evel Knievel! Yay, wikipedia salutes Ham!
  7:52pm
Bex:

I just read Hal Needham's "Stuntman!" I loved it.
  7:52pm
Marmalade kitty:

European American African American.. be more specific duh! please? Americans no not geography! is this stereotype true? No!
  7:52pm
Caryn:

I feel bad for Enos, the other chimp. He died in 1962. Not as full a life as Ham's.
  7:53pm
fred von helsing:

I love ham..
  7:54pm
Bex:

This Ray Romano is great
  7:54pm
Caryn:

And while Ham got a nice grave and a memorial plaque, Enos's body was apparently just discarded as medical waste after testing :(
Poor guy...
  7:55pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Really? I hated the Ray Romano guy.
  7:57pm
Marmalade kitty:

european american is more specific than african american, as africa is several times larger than europe. might as well say world american
  7:59pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Awesome show tonight.
  7:59pm
Caryn:

Now I feel a need to go stare at my Apollo 8-era published map of the Moon. It includes the planned landing sites of Apollos 11-13. Seriously, I collect this crap! Oh lord, another week of this to go! Sorry to everyone in advance!
  8:00pm
Marmalade kitty:

caryn, can you calculate the land mass..? :)
  8:02pm
Marmalade kitty:

american americans!
