Favoriting April 26, 2012: live music from DISAPPEARS!
Chicago 4-piece Disappears play trance-inducing rock music that draws on a range of influences from kraut to Suicide to primordial punk. Founded in 2008 by vocalist/guitarist Brian Case (90 Day Men, The Ponys), they've just released their third LP in as many years for the hometown Kranky label. Pre Language features new drummer Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth, Crucif**s), who joins original members Jonathan Van Herik and Damon Carruesco for this live session. Disappears are in the midst of a tour--> tourdates here.

Listener comments!

  9:05am
northguineahills:

Wow, haven't seen this Don Cherry record. one of my favorites is the one he did w/ Jon Appleton.
  9:09am
Nathan:

Tickle my ear canals today Jason.
  9:12am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

when did these three get together!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am
jason:

that'd be 1995, DCE. Thanks to Rich Hazelton of WFMU's Inflatable Squirrel Carcass for the tip on the Painted Desert
  9:16am
Wendy del Formaggio:

Such a nice start to the show today, Jason.
  9:16am
Nathan:

Dude sounds like Thurston Moore. Not a bad thing. Not complainin'. Just sayin'.
  9:17am
Nathan:

Oh wait. It is. Doh! *slaps forehead*
  9:19am
Wendy del Formaggio:

Nathan, I don't think so. Lee has a higher pitched voice than T Moore. T Moore is also more growly and grumbly. Lee's voice tends toward more clarity, in my opinion. It almost rings like a bell.
  9:20am
Cheri Pi:

Great show, Good morning!
  9:21am
Nathan:

Yeah Thanks Wendy, I'm slowly un-ravelling my ignorance here...
  9:21am
BSI:

whoa, missed that Don Cherry thing. I try to be a completist (not easy with that cat) but haven't heard of that one...
  9:22am
Wendy del Formaggio:

Nathan, no problem. I'm no expert. Just a person w a lot of opinions. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
jason:

hey Wendy! hey NGH, DCE, BSI, Cheri Pi, Nathan and all the listeners, hope this Rhyton's hitting the spot for you as it is for me. A.M. (morning) radio here in Jersey City, a little foggy, got live music from Disappears coming up!
  9:24am
Nathan:

Yeah. I always gave Sonic Youth a pass in the frame of mind that I'd get to them later.
  9:24am
Nathan:

Yeah this Rhyton IS hitting the spot. I'm going to have to go downstairs to the Thrill Jockey UK office and demand a copy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am
jason:

Nathan, what are you doing upstairs from Thrill Jockey? get down there!
  9:27am
BSI:

The spot, it is hit.
  9:27am
Cheri Pi:

Oh Snap! Disappears is today=I'd better shake off this fog.
  9:28am
Cheri Pi:

@Nathan-I'll take one too as long as you're going downstairs.
  9:31am
Caryn:

Maybe this should be one of those "get some for the whole class while you're at it, Nathan" things... :)
  9:31am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

magnificent beards
  9:32am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

didn't even notice the triple-necked guitar thingy, the beards were so distracting
  9:32am
Cecile:

Hola! Lurking and working today.
  9:33am
northguineahills:

That Ikue Mori rec was one of my first Tzadik recs.
  9:33am
Nathan:

I know... I already begged a copy of the Dustin Wong album off Anthea there... they don't sell directly from the office though which is weird. Normally she'll toss me a promo download link if I'm really nice. But she's pretty wise to my manoeuvrings if I start bringing her coffees.
  9:35am
Wendy del Formaggio:

Nathan, I'm sitting upstairs from about 1,000,000 lbs of cheddar. Maybe we can make a trade. :-)
  9:37am
Cheri Pi:

Cecile! me too. Lurking & wurking.
  9:37am
Parq:

"Upstairs from One Million Pounds of Cheddar" - Wen, I think we've found a title for your autobiography.
  9:38am
Cheri Pi:

Some of us are only upstairs at that bastard Eric's.
  9:39am
Caryn:

I'm upstairs from a sewing machine shop.
  9:40am
Caryn:

Also, I now suspect I know the reason why Wendy's comments board handle is what it is.
  9:41am
northguineahills:

I'm upstairs from an Ecuadorian restaurant.
  9:41am

Hello Jason, I have to go now.
I will ear the backup this evening.

here at WFMU, we're upstairs from an Italian deli. In a couple hours the whole building will smell like burnt grease. Then my mouth starts to water
  9:47am
Cheri Pi:

Congrats DCE-don't miss 'em!
  9:48am
Nathan:

It was fun! Can't wait for Disappears. Missed them in London last week.. Whaa!
  9:48am
Wendy del Formaggio:

Jason, burnt grease? But the Flamingo closed! :-D
  9:48am
Caryn:

@jason: yeah, Meghan was saying they need to stop torturing the DJs with the smell or give you free food.
  9:48am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'll be pretty cooked by Sunday night, though.
  9:52am
northguineahills:

I have the audio for a heron cam from Ithaca, NY, and I hear the squawking of canadian geese, so I thought you were all talking about the smell of burnt geese.

Cheri Pi:

Aside-Disappears have nice hair.
  10:26am

huh. I use to listen to 90 Day Men, didn't know there was a connection to Disappears....and I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know Shelly played with the Crucifucks....
  10:27am
dc pat:

CHeri Pi: I noticed the niceness of hair as well...
  10:28am

I hope good hair makes a come-back.

my cup of coffee is very disappointing, but the music is good.

all you gotta do is grow it long on top and grease it up.

I notice DIsappears are skipping/have skipped DC, fuckers.

Lee Ranaldo's coming to DC....but 9:30 though. I don't go there anymore..

I usually save my food comments for Bryce's show, but aloo gobi sounds spot on about now. Heading to the Nepalese place for lunch, I am.
  10:36am
Cheri Pi:

Lee Ranaldo & Lee Scratch Perry & Bad Brains are coming to an out doorsy camping festival in Ohio-I think I have to go! Although it's normally "my thing"
  10:38am
BSI:

FOOD!
  10:39am
Cheri Pi:

Not my thing! I hate hippies and camping.
  10:40am
dc pat:

sounds pretty good Cheri. I'd crawl out of the basement clubs for that.

I'm going to hit the Chinese buffet in about an hour 20 minutes...broccoli w/ heavenly sauce, hopefuly ma po tofu, various "salads"...
  10:41am
paula pc:

@ cheri pi -- and beards, lots of beards at Nelsonville from what I hear
  10:41am
northguineahills:

I'm making a zucchini, jalapeno, brown rice, and refried pinto bean burrito (wheat tortilla).
  10:42am
dc pat:

Funny re hippies: I used this special shampoo yesterday that we got for the kids. It has rosemary in it but it reminded me of something else. I didn't realize until after I'd shampooed that it smelled like patchouli!! Ah I smelled like a hippie!!!
  10:43am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

ngh, that sounds about perfect; dc pat, I recently uncovered some shampoo in the basement that I got in 1998. I used it, but it smelled funny, not hippie funny, but strange funny.
  10:45am
Cheri Pi:

I'm so sick and tired of beards...#stuffwhitepeoplelike. But I'll brave it for Bad Brains.
  10:45am
dc pat:

huh. does shampoo go bad? ngh: make me one of those?
  10:45am
Mike East:

anybody got their kids at work today?
  10:46am
dc pat:

I grow a beard about once a year.....no shaving at the beach, babe.
  10:46am
Cheri Pi:

I know this sounds boring but I'm going to get a brown rice and blackbean bowl from cilantro for lunch and eat half of it. Will also purchase walnuts at the health food store.
  10:47am
dc pat:

man, fmu commenters eat so well. not boring at all.
  10:48am
Tom G:

My pal built that festival in Nelsonville. He's done a great job! Always brings in Michael Hurley and some great surprises. People around there have been sporting beards since the beginning of time!

hey any of you footballers see that Bayern/Madrid match yesterday? Crazy PKs. Schweinsteiger is so cool...
  10:50am
Nathan:

@Cheri Pi That sounds a bit hippy. I just devoured a homemade Roast Aubergine, Roast Corgette, Hummous, Tabouli and Halloumi burrito / wrap thing actually 2 of them...
  10:50am
northguineahills:

If you're ever in Brooklyn, I'll make you a burrito dc pat. One of the perks of unemployment is that my culinary prowess has increased logarithmically .
  10:51am
northguineahills:

Yeah, I saw Bayern/Real yesterday. Insane game.
  10:52am
Tom G:

I watched, DC P. BUT, I fell asleep around min 110 and woke up this morning not knowing what had happened.
  10:52am

However, I fiance is a veggie, so I'm still a novice w/ cooking meats.
  10:53am
northguineahills:

* my = I (wth, ngh?!)
  10:53am
paula pc:

@ Tom G -- that's true...I bet the Adena had beards!
  10:54am
dc pat:

Ronaldo, Kaka, and Ramos all MISSED! It was beautiful.

ngh: same thing here, no meat in the house (I'm veggie too) so I don't know jack about cooking it.
  10:55am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'm glad my name isn't "Kaka".
  10:55am
Cheri Pi:

Me too! Veggie that is.
  10:55am
Tom G:

Almost like it was scripted by an anti-Mourinho.
  10:55am
Nathan:

I had a veggie g/f for a few years. Wasn't a big deal. I don't mind the diet. Actually I'm in the camp of meat rarely and only good stuff if I do have it. The good stuff tends to be expensive.
  10:59am
northguineahills:

I was just rooting for anyone but Real. The PK misses/saves made it an actual enjoyable PK shootout.

When I first started dating my gf, 4.5 years ago, she wouldn't kiss me if I've eaten meat until I brushed my teeth. Now, she eats some seafood, and tolerates me bringing meat into the pad, but I rarely do so. (I'm a recovered veggie).
  11:00am
dc pat:

oh no! "conspiracy of beards"

it's funny how everybody hates Real. Sort of like Chelsea...eyooo.
  11:01am
dc pat:

Jason: just say you're an anarchist and don't recognize any authority and the cops just exist to protect the property of the rich. That should do it.
  11:02am
Nathan:

@northguineahills - That's annoying, glad she's lightened up a bit. Most veggies here in the UK also include seafood in the diet..
  11:03am
Caryn:

Man, my dinner seems so boring in comparison to everyone else. Just a plate of mashed potatoes. Should I start making up stuff?
  11:03am
northguineahills:

(I can be a bad influence).
  11:04am
northguineahills:

daggnabbit, I'm out of fresh Oaxacan queso!
  11:04am
Tom G:

I feel like Barca is the new Real--I encounter more Barca antipathy these days than just about any other.

Anyhow, have to root for Bayern now, but not because I'm a fan!
  11:05am
Nathan:

@northguineahills - Congratulations! I pride myself on being a bad influence. I've broken many a vegetarian amongst other things..
  11:07am
Nathan:

@Caryn - Mashed potatoes... you could chop up some spring onions add those in make some potato cakes, pan fry add some smoked salmon and/or maybe a poached egg.. ? Instant fun. Unless it's budgetary Mash. In which case a tin of baked beans works well. Maybe some steamed broccoli.
  11:07am
dc pat:

Man around these parts every kid I see has a Messi jersey on.
  11:08am
northguineahills:

Neuer was spectacular in goal for Bayern. Never really paid attention to him before.
  11:09am
Tom G:

yeah, I see 'em on the young ones, but young ones like winners. it's the oldies who hate em.

neuer=one of the best.
  11:10am
dc pat:

ngh, TomG: you know it. Looking forward to the Euro this June. Strong German team.
  11:11am
northguineahills:

Euro should be fun.

I just found some fresh cilantro. Getting hungry thinking about the burrito, might lunch it early.
  11:11am

the new spiritualized seems to be the FMU song of the week. how is the rest of the album or ep..
  11:12am

yeah man, I think I'll slip out at 11:30...the buffet will be nice and fresh that way..
  11:13am
moose:

who is the fmu swagmaster? there was a mix-up with mine
  11:13am

Yeah, I think it's down to Germany, Spain or Holland. Probably give the advantage to the first 2. Should be fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am

Cheri Pi:

I hope my swag arrives in the next month so I can wear it in a foreign country.
  11:16am
dc pat:

I like Spain but I'm rooting for Ireland and Germany. Ireland won't get out of the gate of course with Spain and Italy in their group but who knows.
  11:16am
Tom G:

Hey DJ! Great show.

Don't kill me, Spiritualized live was one of the most snooze-inducing experiences of my life.
  11:16am
dc pat:

gotta say I'm not in love with this Spiritualized tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
jason:

thanks Tom G!g
  11:17am
Tom G:

Poor Ireland. Haven't they suffered enough but now to get stuck in that group ... sheesh. Be rooting for them too.
  11:17am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Spiritualized never really did it for me. I like everything similar to Spiritualized but for some reason they just never cut any new fissures into my brain.
  11:18am
Nathan:

@Tom G - I concur having seen them a few timezzzz....

@DC Pat - It's got a kind've Blur thing going, particularly the end of this song.
  11:18am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

@ Nathan, yeah, totally! and I love Blur!
  11:19am
northguineahills:

I like all things snoozey and boring.
  11:19am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

rainy afternoons, naps, watching the news...
  11:20am
Wallis:

Snoozy & boring can be a great thing.
  11:21am
Nathan:

I think it's that ersatz gospel meets rock'n'roll thing that folks get into because it's so OTT. But the reality is that Jason S has kind've worked himself into a corner with his production values, all the band members / choirs don't really allow for it to expand and let it's hair down in the live sense. It's very on the box. Much prefer Spacemen 3 / Sonic Boom.
  11:21am
Caryn:

@Nathan: yep, budgetary mash. Made of potato mash powder, milk powder (no milk in the house), water and salt. Basically just something to fill the stomach. Baked beans or some veg would be nice... Or eggs. I'm saving my soup can for tomorrow and will party with some tomato pasta on Saturday. Nice!
  11:21am
Wallis:

but you must embrace snoozy, boring things for what they are: enjoy them BECAUSE they're boring.
  11:22am
northguineahills:

Nathan, I agree w/ your assessment, but I do like Jason Spaceman's forays into improv lately.
  11:25am
Nathan:

@Caryn - oh crap I was on that sort've diet for a few weeks while waiting to get paid. I completely feel your pain. I too saved soup can for a special treat.. Eugh. Lentil soup is cheap to make in large batches. Real mash ain't hard to conjure on a budget. I had cous cous for 3 days straight.
  11:25am
Tom G:

Hey I don't mind boring ... I listen to Luna from time to time!
  11:25am
Caryn:

I've liked some Spiritualized stuff, but what I've heard of the new album is kinda meh.
  11:27am
dc pat:

A bag of dried black beans is WAY cheaper than cans. Like $1.50. That'll keep you in beans for several days.
  11:28am
Mike East:

"Ladies and Gentleman..." is a near perfect album in my very humble opinion. I'm sure many will disagree, but I likes what I likes. I plan to get the new record when I have some disposable income.
  11:29am
Caryn:

@Nathan: yeah, have 4 euros saved away, but will probably spend that on a special treat for May Day. Like meat or some fruit. They do have potatoes on sale now at the local supermarket, so I could spend a euro on that to get some proper mash... Over here, a bag of dried beans or lentils is about 2,50-3,99 euros. So not the cheapest option.
  11:29am
Cheri Pi:

My thing is to cook several bags of dried beans on Sunday and then freeze them in usable portions so they are at the ready.

Nathan:

@Caryn - Next time you get some dough, I recommend investing in quantities of tinned tomatoes, lentils, stock cubes, rice, tinned spinach, various tinned/dry legumes (chick peas / black beans / kidney beans), onions, curry powders and from that you can conjure a slew of various meals that don't feel like punishment for those rainy days / weeks.
  11:30am
Mike East:

@dc pat - I could eat black beans and rice everyday if I had to. So cheap, yet so good.
  11:30am
dc pat:

oh crap, sorry Caryn. What the fuck Europe?!
  11:30am
Nathan:

@caryn Where are you based at the moment?
  11:31am
BSI:

It would seem that no amount of dark-chocolate-covered espresso beans will be enough to get me through this "take your progeny to work day" thing...
  11:33am
Cheri Pi:

yesterday was take your hangover to work-day.
  11:33am
dc pat:

kids to work: I always do that between Xmas and New Years. Nobody in the office, we just draw and listen to tunes all day.

BSI: oh, you're dealing with other peoples' kids...
  11:33am
Cheri Pi:

He's dealing with OPP.
  11:33am
dc pat:

CheriPi: that's everyday over here...
  11:34am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

ha ha Cheri you just beat me to it!
  11:35am
BSI:

@dcp: aye. Other peoples'. I could never handle one of my own. Let's just say NOT THE RIGHT TYPE. Thankfully, Missus BSI is the same. So, the coffee-beans are a bust. Moving on to scotch maybe?
  11:35am
Cheri Pi:

Yeah, you know me.
  11:36am
Nathan:

I loved going to work with my parents. I learned about early days computer networking and got to see 9inch floppy disks... oh those were the days. See this stuff sticks in your kids craw.
  11:38am
Caryn:

@cheri pi: yeah, I think the main obstacle to being poor is not owning a freezer. It would be helpful to make lots of food at once.
@Nathan: Finland. It has some of the most expensive food prices in Europe. I think that's partly because we're the world's northernmost agricultural country. The big box stores a bit cheaper, but it would cost 8 euros to get to the nearest one by bus, so the trips alone would eat up the discounts. But in May, I'm eligible for church food assistance again, so looking forward to getting some actual food then. That's when I stock up on pantry items.
  11:38am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

my kids could watch me post on WFMU all day...
  11:38am
dc pat:

crap I think this is the monthly birthday lunch today ...must..get...out..of it...they eat shitty food around here.
  11:38am
BSI:

@Nathan: that's a good point. My mother was at a postal service sorting station, & this was the mid '70s so it was the age of computing via 72-column punched cards, huge spools of magnetic tape, etc...

But then, I'm pretty sure I didn't run around that office screeching like a pheasant possessed by demons.
  11:38am
northguineahills:

Lucky for me, ms. ngh doesn't want kids until she's my age, and I have 6.5 years on her.
  11:39am
Caryn:

@cheri pi: hah!
  11:39am
Nathan:

@BSI I find if you can't beat 'em join 'em. It's an attitude thing. I kind've like kids being a large one myself. But if you give it a go to interact with them you might be surprised at how annoyance turns to something resembling non-annoyance. Just a thought. But yeah some are demon spawn and should be poked with sharp sticks until they stop moving.
  11:40am
northguineahills:

ok, I had no queso, so I used tofu french onion cream cheese (better for my lactose intolerant GI), but I also found some fresh tomatoes, and naga jolokia sauce.
  11:41am
dc pat:

I know some folks don't need 'em but kids rule. They kind of taught me how to live again. All I was doing was playing in bars, drinking in bars, eating in bars. Now I do all kinds of crap. WAY healthier.
  11:41am
Tom G:

So there are 2 Chin Chins ...
  11:42am
northguineahills:

I like all of my friends' kids, but that's b/c they're awesome parents (all of them). Now, random kids, that's a different matter.
  11:42am
Caryn:

There's no "take your kid to work" tradition here, but my dad would take us to work with him on weekends. I still remember the fun going through the storerooms with the boxes full of old computer punch cards and ancient computers. They also had a plough in the staff coffee room!
  11:43am
Mike East:

My 7 year old is here testing out guitar amps and drawing. She gets along with my coworkers quite well. If there were more kids here, that might be a different story. The tend to get exponentially louder when they get together.
  11:45am
BSI:

@Nathan: true for many folks but for me, it's a total oil-and-water thing. I've always been hysterically anti-kid (even when I WAS one). They generate terrible angst when they get within a few yards. Mrs.BSI and I both shudder at the thought.

But the dog gives us more joy-of-life than I could dream of. I could just stay at home all day, stare at the dog, and laugh my ass off. It happens often.
  11:46am
Nathan:

@Caryn Suomi! Yeah I could see it being expensive. The produce there was neither particularly plentiful nor of great quality. I do like how they sell blood by the litre in the supermarket probably because of all the bloodsuckers that reside there. Shitty situation though.. you live in the sticks? Caryn isn't really a Finnish name is it?
  11:47am
dc pat:

anti-kid I can understand but....dog people, I just don't get. ick.
  11:48am
Nathan:

@dc pat - Hahahaha!
  11:49am
dc pat:

Jason: the anarchist thing worked for me. Just do as I tell you... actually I think I said something like "I don't believe in your laws."
  11:49am
Andrew Waterloo:

@dc pat, what truly confuses me is pro-cat
  11:49am
tim from Champaign:

I got a good one for getting out of jury duty. Yell out "Bullshit!" or "Go To Hell!" whenever any of the attorneys and judge start to speak.
  11:50am
dc pat:

best name ever: Here Comes a Big Black Cloud!!
  11:50am
Mike East:

my advice for jury duty is to call the number they give you first. I didn't know this, so I drove all the way to Morristown to find out that I had been relieved of duty and could have saved myself a trip by calling the number the night before. Atleast I had an excuse to have the day off.
  11:51am
Caryn:

@Nathan: yep, in the sticks. The local store just added condensed milk to its product line with a big hallo. I kept thinking, "seriously, this is such a step up in your product range that you need to publicize it this much?" Caryn's not my actual name, but an anglicized version of my middle name.
  11:51am
dc pat:

I have cats but not by choice. Some times they're funny but mostly it's just shit and puke.
  11:51am
BSI:

I'm fully in Ken Freedman's anti-cat-internet camp.

As for jury duty, being in DC seems to negate all the crazy stuff. I think the jury pool is too small. No matter what, yr.ass is IN THERE. Almost like acting like a psycho increases your chances of serving.
  11:53am
Caryn:

I'm pro-cat. Well, pro-most pets, really.
  11:53am
dc pat:

BSI: true, I get the call every 2 years on the dot, and almost ALWAYS get picked.
  11:55am
Nathan:

@Caryn - Whoa yeah.. Go Finland! I went to a wedding there once. Weirdest wedding I ever went to... everyone was dreadfully quiet through the service, waiting outside the reception, through the dinner... then the drinking... then the speeches... then well all hell broke loose. The 5 litre jugs of Koskenkorva were loosed the reindeer meat came out and the rest was a blur. My finnish ex always said: "first they're quiet , then they talk, then they start laughing, then they start fighting" she was right.
  11:55am
Nathan:

@dc pat - You should inform them next time that you're a regular freeform radio listener.
  11:56am
dc pat:

Nathan: yeah, no streaming in the waiting room...
  11:58am
Parq:

Been busy, so summing up: Kids in the work place -- for it. Serving jury duty -- for it. Cats on the internet -- just sort of accept it's there, like rain and pollen.
  11:58am
Nathan:

@Caryn - and the classic 'everything bad comes from Russia' line cracks me up.
  11:58am
Caryn:

@Nathan: yep, sounds about right. There's a saying "Finns know several languages, and stay silent in all of them." Until they drink.
  11:58am
BSI:

I recall it's always Ken Burns' BASEBALL documentary on the waiting-room televisions bolted to the ceiling. No escaping the soothing narrator voice and slowly panning still photos...
  12:00pm
dc pat:

I wasn't aware of how different Finland and Sweden/Norway are until I recently had a discussion with a Finish coworker.

BSI: yeah, no chance of permier league there...
  12:01pm
Caryn:

@Nathan: yeah, I think when you've historically been a country wedged between two major powers and keep getting swapped from the one to the other like some re-gifted waffle iron, you turn bitter. The Poles have the same history and have the line about being the doormat of Europe that everyone steps on.
