Listener comments!

  11:58am
listener james from westwood:

i actually woke up with the opening theme for this show in my head!
  12:00pm
Carmichael:

OK, present.
  12:03pm
Van in DC:

This will be an archive catchup for me :)

Hello party people!

There is medication for that, LJFW.
  12:06pm
northguineahills:

watching Euro Cup while wfmuing.
  12:07pm
jill:

Whitey and Euro Cup seem to go hand-in-hand

Any racist chants yet, NGH?
  12:08pm
listener james from westwood:

ran across this book title earlier this week while proofreading a chapter on cultural/ethnic bias in psychology: "even the rat was white."
  12:08pm
Van in DC:

Ha, watching and listening to Federer vs. Djokovic in French Open right now
  12:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Loved that Curtis Mayfield! Love Curtis in general, but that song is new to me, I dig it!
GSH and P.Funk, I'm digging this whole theme!
  12:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Reminds me of a Joe McG block! :)

@LJfW: You think that's bad, check out Northern Ireland--there, opposing researchers would blame the rat for being Protestant/Catholic.

Doug Schulkind:

Hey there Jill!
  12:11pm
Carmichael:

<black-gloved fist in the air>
  12:12pm
northguineahills:

wouldn't know, b/c I have it on mute since I'm listening to Steinski. The Dutch claimed they were racially abused during their training session yesterday.

They're not too many people of color on either the Greek or Polish teams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Doug Schulkind:

Tommie Smith and John Carlos are huge heroes of mine. Smith was the track coach at Oberlin in the years prior to my arrival.
  12:14pm
Carmichael:

The Dutch? Racially abused?? Did someone call them Cloggers?
  12:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: That's cool! Did you ever meet him?

"He later became a track coach at Oberlin College in Ohio, where he also taught sociology and until recently was a faculty member at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California."
  12:16pm
northguineahills:

Probably swamp germans. But seriously, the Dutch have a lot players of color.
  12:17pm
Carmichael:

Swamp Germans, that's funny. We Irish were referred to by the Brits as Bog Hoppers.
  12:18pm
northguineahills:

I left a brat out in my kitchen overnight for 6 hours while it was about 65 F (18 C). Do you think it's still good? (told you i know nothing about cooking meat)
  12:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

"In August 2008, Tommie Smith gave 2008 Olympic triple gold winner Usain Bolt of Jamaica one of his shoes from the 1968 Olympics as a birthday gift." How nice of him!
(He was probably thinking there would little chance of giving away the other shoe after Yusain's race :)
  12:20pm
trsh:

hey= I'm listening to Friday! Can you hear it? It sounds great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

Never met him, Matt. Smith was pushed out of "liberal" Oberlin before I got there.
  12:20pm
lewis:

whitey on the moon played on my iPod this morning and I imagined a (ok this is really geeky) segue into a reading from Dick Nelson's The Moon and the Ghetto (Nelson is an economist who thinks a a lot about innovation and public policy)
  12:21pm
listener james from westwood:

ngh, i'd steer clear of that brat. that's a bit long at room temp for raw meat.
  12:22pm
lewis:

doug - did you go to Oberlin (what class? 1980 here)
  12:23pm
jill:

cool interview with John Carlos - http://www.democracynow.org/2011/10/12/john_carlos_1968_olympic_us_medalist
  12:23pm
lewis:

Dick Nelson is also an Oberlin grad if anyone is keeping score...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Doug Schulkind:

I thought "The Moon and Ghetto" was by Newt Gingrich.

I was class of '83.
  12:29pm
Carmichael:

Doug, you're thinking of "The Orphanage and the Prison Labor Camp".
  12:30pm
lewis:

Well played Carmichael!
  12:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: From GTDS, I still can't believe that blog that posted a jazz album and praised the "lack of drum solos"! What kind of blog was it?

But I'm glad you bit your tongue/finger and procured it--even if you don't like the messenger, bringing good stuff to GTDR gives it the respect it deserves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Doug Schulkind:

I'll try to find it, Matt.
  12:33pm
northguineahills:

EBTG reminds me of the mid-90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
I think the blog was Guitar & the Wind Again. The blog is offline, so I can't confirm, but that's the only site that pops up in my reader upon searching.
  12:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like jazz enough, but don't consider myself a "jazz person"--and I know not all drum solos are created equal; but still, when the drummer is really feeling it with the rest of the band, it is the BEST way to hear drums. To group all those amazing drum solos in with the less than stellar ones is pigheaded to me, even as a non "jazz person".
  12:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Perhaps they were "rock people" and are impatient with jazz drum solos.
  12:37pm
trsh:

*~- jazz hands -~*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Doug Schulkind:

Hi trsh! Hi trsh!
I owe you something. Been busy. Soon come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
I did have the feeling that I was "rescuing" that Max Roach record.
  12:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Heh, trsh :)
Glad we have music rescuers, Doug!
  12:41pm
Carmichael:

Has there ever been a bad Bacharach song? Schmaltzy here and there, but always well written.
  12:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

My urgent tasks are done, so I'm going to get lunch. The DC area has diversified a lot since the 70s, so I walk out into the coffee and vanilla bean VA, across from rocky road DC and moose tracks MD! (Boy, I'm hungry...)

Thanks Doug! Have a great Friday and great weekend everyone!
  12:43pm
trsh:

Heya Matt, Doug,.. everyone.
@Doug All it good time. Or not.
I'll say this much: The clangs of the music industry machine .. ecch.
