Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Closing Comments
Thanks for checking out this playlist and I hope you enjoyed this epsiode of the show. I enjoyed ferreting out these records from their hiding places in various upstate thrift stores and antique shops. All were under $1.50. Do I always love the records I play? No, not really. But, I do like the way curating a handful of records, many that I'm not familiar with, makes selecting tracks for the show much easier than trawling through my sizable vinyl collection, fussing over what are the "coolest" songs I could play. I enjoy "selling" them to you much more than trying to make you think I am a DJ of impaccable taste. You know what? On some level I DO love every track I play. Who cares anyway, right?

Anyway ... the Accuplaylist was slow this week. Not a lot of action, and that concerns me (or my ego). I wonder if I didn't alienate a few of you with smart assery and my unorthodox scoring methodology during the "Duel" with Fabio. Hope not. I guess I do care if you like this show or not. I also know many don't like politics, and I imagine I lose some listeners that way, And the music. Yeah ... I know.

Well, I'm rambling. I'll sign off and say I hope you had a good summer. My wife and I sure did. Really looking forward to fall and election season and all the excitement that comes with that. Life is good. Hang in there my freinds and ... always remember!

Peace and Love,

Manhattan -USA

I went to the movies last Wednesday and saw John Demme's documentary about Heil Young. I went to the 2PM showing and was the only one in the theater. The jist... Abbreviation: Letters grouped together (F-B-I, N-Y-C, etc)
Acronym: Letters spoken together as a word (NATO, HIPAA, etc)
Pseudo-blend: Beginnings of words spoken together as a word (PSYOP, Tribeca, etc)

Night Al:

anyone watching DNC on C-Span? Charlie Crist is set to speak tonight. they have him listed as (R-FL), but he renounced the GOP over a year ago. I think he's listed as (I - FL) nowadays, even though he's currently not in office. Gotta turn up Florida's Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz for a minute...be right back.
  6:25pm
northguineahills:

Didn't he say he was a Michigan State fan? B/c, Clay is playing the University of Michagan alma mater.
  6:25pm
other david:

Yep Matt - it seems to be a real hallmark of the use of English in the States, shorten everything down to the bare minimum. It works I guess and it's catching on, on this side of the pond too.
  6:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mary Wing played Quincy Jones (I think) from the XXIII Olympiad soundtrack LP, when the Olympics were going on this year.

Crist seems pretty tame by present day Florida political standards, AL. ------ North Guinea ... yeah ... was hoping you wouldn't notice , but FMU listeners never miss a thing. Good ear.
  6:27pm
kat330:

Hiya, Clay! Hi, all good folks! We're listening but keyboard inactive.

Clay, that piece you played, I think you said it was '72 or so? Had an accordion -- that reminded me quite a bit of Jacques Brel.
Avatar 6:28pm
Clay:

Hi Kat ... I liked that song. Especially the long held-out vocal note at the end. Good 2cu!
  6:28pm
other david:

hey kat & philo - you're getting a ticking off for keyboard inactivity :)
  6:29pm
kat330:

Uh-oh -- what does that entail, OD? Hi, to you, too! :)
  6:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

@OD: George Orwell believed that pseudo-blends would be used as a tool in restricting language and then thought "1984" style. He used the early example of "Comintern" as an example of removing the original associations and diversity of the words. "Minitrue" and all the "Mini-" ministries were an example used in his novel.
  6:29pm
northguineahills:

As a former Floridian (lived there for 20 years, w/ family still there), I agree that Crist is rather tame by Floridian GOP standards.
Avatar 6:29pm
Clay:

Philo. Hello, old bean.
  6:30pm
Timb:

Crist did some good things to stand up to the Republicans when it came to bad bills on education. He earned a lot of respect from progressives and people in the middle, but he ended up in a political nowhere land after he switched to independent. We really need to get rid of the 2 party system altogether. Ban both parties, start a new system.
  6:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Hoosier friends kat and Philo!

OD is right, you need a speech-to-text mic to fill in the gap! :)

Matt from Springfield:

Stan Freberg, now he's good!
  6:32pm
kat330:

NYers, I think you might have a gem in Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. [Her biopic would have to have Amy Ryan in the lead.]
  6:33pm
other david:

@Matt: Yes I read 1984 and it's an interesting comparison.. whether it's deliberate, or just a natural progression for language.. I don't know.. guess it depends on whether I'm wearing my cynic hat or not :)

@kat: I'm afraid I can't divulge the details in advance!
  6:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Philo: Good noticing! (Emm Eff Ess) ;)
  6:34pm
kat330:

Since Lee Hamilton snd Bayh retired, can't hardly point to a Hoosier politician to be proud of. There's Mr. Potatoe Head of course.
  6:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mark "Paul Revere" Lindsay, IIRC?
  6:35pm
Night Al:

ditto Timb......Jill Stein and the Green Party will probably get my vote. I still think that 911 was an inside job. I've watched hours of evidence and smell a BIG rat. The 911 commission was as big a political sweep-the-dirt-under-the-rug job as the Warren Commission. Some Facebook friends constantly send me conspiracy theory links and a lot of it makes sense to me. I mean some really valid points are brought up on many covert operations in my opinion.
Avatar 6:36pm
Clay:

Yes Matt ... that Mark Lindsay.
  6:38pm
Night Al:

Desmond TUtu has called for Bush/Cheney and Tony Blair to be brought up before the Hague on war crimes.
  6:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Paul Ryan has said he'll do this TO "a country in despair and decline"--note that he never said he would STOP the "despair and decline"!
  6:40pm
Philo Gristle:

I tend to enjoy it as a literary device (quite a few scientifiction novels of yesteryear have done experiments in dropping of words, punctuation, letters etc), and as an occasional editor of crime fiction I like the concept of compressing verbosity into its essence... but simplification b4 u lrn z lingo proper will atrophy ones brain.
  6:41pm

4 rlz philo!
  6:42pm
kat330:

@Philo: "compressing verbosity into its essence" -- Guess you married me because you love a challenge. :)

Obama signed the NDAA, and let BP allow an oil volcano to erupt in the gulf for months. He said to forget about any retribution against Bush/Cheney that it was NOT going to happen. He said forget about repealing NAFTA/WTO.....

Night Al:

NAFTA and WTO have suckedaway almost the exact amount of jobs as we have unemployed in this country. If you want to solve the unemployment crisis, repeal NAFTA/WTO. Ross Perot tried to warn us against NAFTA/WTO years ago. He was dead on right!
  6:58pm
sfrances:

I hear ya, Al, I really do: and I've voted my heart in a swing state before & answered the 2000 wrath of my friends (I'm ok with it)--but I'm in GOP hell/culture shock back here in VA and so my heart will vote Dem. I'm with you: Obama is nowhere near liberal enough for me either--and I'm not saying I won't vote 3rd party in another swing state election: just not this one, for me.
  6:58pm
Philo Gristle:

It's such a skewed perspective, coming from Europe..... I always considered myself a moderate leftist green, thinking Clinton was a slight rightwinger, and Obama a centrist. Guess Im a pinko after all!
  6:58pm
Timb:

Great show Clay!
  6:59pm
DPCD:

Here we go- I am getting all kinds of email about a pending unilateral strike on Iran from Israel. It will solve their problem with Obama at this point in his career, because he won't take the risk of stopping them. Strikes against Lebanon and any other neighbors would be justified if they complain, and the poor Palestinians could expect to be flattened once again.
Foreign policy is one thing we really suck at.
