Favoriting September 13, 2012: 9-11 ... Eleven Years On

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
September 11th, 2012, exactly eleven-years to the day since the attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan - I went with my micro-cassette recorder in tow, to interview people at the attack site and in nearby Zuccotti Park, where boisterous arguments were taking place concerning several of the days most contentious issues. Over the course of the day I was able to record a broad-range of opinions from a sizable cross-section of people. Be advised, some of the rhetoric was quite inflammatory and potentially offensive. However, in the interest of keeping it real, I have 'left it in' to give an accurate portrayal of the prevailing mood on-site at 9-11 ... eleven years on.

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. It's always a tough task to visit Ground Zero on 9-11. I ask myself if I am just bothering the families of the victims and the first responders, or if it is important to keep the memory of that day alive.

Zuccotti is always a hotbed of political discourse. Even more so since Occupy Wall Street immortalized the location in 2011. Please listen to next week's show, the one-year anniversary of OWS.

I appreciate your continued loyalty and support for this program. I also have to thank my wife, Kirsten, for allowing me to do these shows when I certainly could be doing something more lucrative. She is a steady supporter of myself and the show and that means everything to me.

The weeks fly by. On to another episode. Unitl next time everyone, take care, and always remember those who perished and gave their lives, and those who continue to suffer the terrible after-effects of 9-11-01.

Peace

I recently conducted a media study of archived footage from September 11, 2001, counting the number of times major news networks showed the plane crashes, building collapses and people falling from the towers.
  6:13pm
kat330:

@Clay/Danne: We had already planned a NYC visit months ahead of that. Our Manhattan hosts were the ones who suggested we all go down there. I'm still uncertain we should have.
  6:14pm
Scott Blake:

CNN showed the plane crash 109 times from 9AM to midnight, about once every eight minutes. The BBC showed the planes crashing into the towers 240 times, roughly 16 times per hour.
  6:14pm
Danne D:

I don't begrudge people going down there and remembering in the fashion they see fit. And Clay, I have zero problem with you going down and getting the thoughts of people that are there - that is a different thing altogether.
  6:14pm
Scott Blake:

CNN showed the towers collapsing 161 times, or about once every five minutes. CBS was the first to show victims falling from the towers, beginning around noon and replaying the footage 13 times that day.
  6:15pm
Cecile:

well, I must go, but great show Clay.

I was glad in retrospect that the teachers at my high school didn't play TV the first 4 hours or so after 9/11--I saw glimpses of TV at the library in between the classes, but it seems the more people watched of TV of 9/11 in the first few hours/days, the more traumatized they seem to have been.

Danne D:

@Matt - I bet your teachers are a similar age to me. All I know is that the day that Challenger blew up they played it like 1000 times. I knew the coverage of the WTC would be the same way. It was self preservation. I watched the collapse later that day (while I was buying the radio I used to listen to coverage).

My sister's next door neighbor died in one of the towers - he worked in finance, the one brother of five with the "safe" job - his other brothers were police and firefighters. You just never know.

Yeesh, just arrived. Hiya Clay and ClayHeads. Rock me gently, rock me slowly.
  6:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

It was a uniquely horrible thing, but so raw, visceral, and repetitive--there was no new information for a long time. It's best not to stick to the TV in times like that. Instead remember the victims, and find out what you can do to help survivors.
  6:18pm
Scott Blake:

I believe the news acted against peaceful society on 9/11 by showing the plane crashes, building collapses, and falling people, giving power to the very people that wanted to frighten us.

I made my first trip ever to NYC on the Thanksgiving Day after 911. All the photos and notes along the fence brought tears to my eyes. The smell still lingered around there. Got off at the Fulton station? and immediately noticed the smell. Amazed that the windows in the church there were intact.
  6:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: You know that could be a factor. They may have been a bit older, but probably remembered such sudden live events well.
  6:21pm
kat330:

@Danne: In further explication, our hosts were actually in Los Angeles on 9/11, and my (since 1975 in Boston) was supposed to fly home for her birthday -- today, September 13th -- but couldn't get back to the U.W.S. for many days. By the time we arrived, I think we were compliant with anything and everything they chose to do.
  6:21pm
Danne D:

I remember in the office building I worked in at that time being in the little deli that it had inside and basically the grainiest (over the air) tv images. This dude was there and was commenting about how the buildings collapsing would affect the real estate prices. I wanted to throttle him but chalked it up to a defense mechanism in his mind - the equivalent of nervous laughter.

I think the USA spends WAY too much money on defense, when so much needs to be built up in our country, not destroyed in others. Why does the USA have to be the policeman for the world? I feel like the military is JONESING to start more conflicts. Libya, Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan. I feel like there is an agenda that is being covertly implemented sometimes. @Night Al: Even most very senior commanders in the military will generally not want to invade somewhere. Your last sentence hit the nail on the head, esp. by neocons: it's the political elite at the very top of government, who have beliefs like America's elite outside of government (from whom they are drawn). They want to remake the world in America/their-vision-of's image, and some don't care how many of our servicemen will die or be broken to accomplish it.

Clay you need another hour on the show, where people can call in and reflect on the interviews :)

sagan, re the day after film - 'Imagine a room awash in gasoline, and there are two implacable enemies in that room. One of them has nine thousand matches, the other seven thousand matches. Each of them is concerned about who's ahead, who's stronger'

i don't know why, but i thought it was one has 9,000, the other has one match. point is the same

I've been thinking about the 1,000 year anniversary of 9/11 lately. I hope there will be less screaming.

Matt from Springfield:

@kata: It's all about context. "Zionism" means different things to different people, and many who are opposed to Israel's settlements, or wars, or the state as a Jewish identity call themselves anti-Zionist. The particular group I saw, by their posters and listening for a minute weren't focused on peace or ending aggression. At least in my interpretation.

Night Al:

When I flew to NYC for my first visit on Thanksgiving Day just after 911, I was pulled aside by a red beret and questioned. It seems my only coat I owned was my army jacket from 1982. I looked a little militant to him for just 10 weeks after 911. I explained I've been living in St Pete since I mustered out and had no winter clothes. A girl I met at my local tiki bar had invited me up to stay with her on 116th St in spanish harlem since I've never been to NYC. She and her friends were down decompressing after 911. She had to back out of the WTC area that morning on her way to work. If she hadn't been running late, she would have been there. Thanks Tracy Merlau! Love you girl!

I hear ya Matt. Thanks for clarifying.

Matt from Springfield:

Most others at the event who mentioned Israel spoke words against its aggression, or settlements. Also about the US letting Israel dictate our foreign policy for us. But in that context they weren't sympathizing with Hamas/Hezbollah or anything like that. It's what you say, as well as how.

Have a good night everyone!
Stay safe next week, Clay!

I agree OD @6:53! Clay should do that on the next "Double Dusty" fill-in, air a tape and ask for calls on the interviews afterwards! :)

@kata: My pleasure, I hear you too. That's the problem: such a complex issue is hard to get a handle on sometimes. If some people only want simple answers to everything, they're the ones who will inevitable become extremists.

Matt from Springfield:

Powerful show Clay! I'm going back to listen again later!
Have a good night Danne, kata, kat330, OD, Philo, dale..and all you wonderful commenters!
