Thought that Windhand tune was gonna be Black Sabbath...

Hi All! Thanks for tuning in! Very psyched that Hugo Burnham, drummer of Gang of Four is my PEER PRESSURE guest at 1pm! Post questions if you've got em~~ :)
  12:19pm
PKNY:

That Windhand was so killer, thanks for playing!
  12:20pm
Luna:

'ello from Nuevo Mexico...Land of Fresh Roasted Green Chile. 'Tis the season.

here as well -- like the mustard/ketchup colors

Bad Ronald:

I don't feel tardy...
  12:34pm
tim from champaign:

Ha! Bad Ronald, that's one of my favorite lines.
  12:34pm
Cecile:

Roll call!

  12:37pm
joe:

So I was thinking DK next year's fund raiser you should make a shirt of Zorro and Bullwinkle sword fighting. :)
  12:37pm
Cecile:

I like it, Joe!

I just call it Anthrax.
  12:38pm
jon barmak:

Hello Professor Hugo. You prickly old pear you. Hello from Blighty
  12:41pm
Cecile:

this is good, Diane, but it's almost...nu-metal!
  12:42pm
Cecile:

man, this so takes me back.
I remember just being spastic with happiness when this EP came out in the states.
  12:42pm
Cheri Pi:

Joe-Cecile have already designed DK's next t-shirt, it stars a mule, a buckeye, rhubarb and 2 governors.
  12:44pm
eyenoise:

Entertainment! has never gotten old. Still sounds amazingly fresh.
  12:44pm
Cecile:

well, I dunno, Cheri. Our concept kind of perplexed Miss Kamikaze and I do think she worries for our sanity sometimes. :D
  12:44pm
Cheri Pi:

the 2 governors are battling. What's more metal than that?
  12:46pm
Cheri Pi:

Cecile, baby, with our checkered Ohio/Michigan past, sadly our sanity never stood a chance.
  12:46pm
Cecile:

also I have to do a TON of clean-up on it now that I know what I did wrong on it.
  12:47pm
Cecile:

I can make it look so much more metal now...
  12:48pm
tim from champaign:

Are you using a Michigan governor? If so, I hope it's Governor Granholm. She rules! Too bad she can't run for prez.
  12:50pm
Cecile:

no, it's Toledo War era governors. It's Stevens T. Mason.
  12:50pm
Cheri Pi:

do it Cecile. Make it more metal than Metal!!
  12:51pm
Cheri Pi:

Stevens T. Mason is the, they, & thee only governor that matters to true Power Metal Historians.
  12:51pm
Cecile:

Pi and I decided to get into the fake historical concept album biz. I did an album cover for our concept album on the Toledo War. We just need Iced Earth or someone to buy it off us. Concept Album Kit - just add band.
  12:52pm
tim from champaign:

Oh, cool. I'm glad Michigan lost that one. Who wants Toledo on their state stinkin up the joint?
  12:54pm
Cecile:

I dunno, it would end all this periodic talk up in the UP of joining Wisconsin, because we WOULD be Wisconsin. Because Ohio wouldn't have kept us most likely.
  12:54pm
Satchmo "Monkey Feet" Infidado:

Yes indeed another beautiful day and some good old rocking music..... Lets start a revolution!!
  12:56pm
Cecile:

satch, I'm spinning around on my office chair now.
  12:58pm
Cheri Pi:

There is more metal album fodder surrounding the Toledo war and subsequent fallout; it can be yours for a low, low price. Just add your True Power metal band.
  1:01pm
Droll:

Cecile, You have no idea how good "Concept Album Kit" sounds to me -- perfectly aligned with the goals of my "band". How do I become the first customer? I don't do "True" Power Metal, or "True" anything else. Surreal everything.
  1:03pm
Cheri Pi:

send us your money Droll.
  1:04pm
Cecile:

Droll, contact Cheri. She is the conceptualist, I but the servant to her ideas.
  1:04pm
Cecile:

and yeah, that too.
  1:05pm
Cheri Pi:

A representative will get back to you.
  1:06pm
Cecile:

you guys were like the LOUDEST band ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
efd:

Rezillos are coming to the US soon! In November, I think.
  1:07pm
Droll:

CP, Yeah, about the money, the advance is already spent. I was hoping you'd do it for points. Sound good? I have a great deal with YouTube on distribution.
  1:07pm
Cecile:

Ooh, Cheri, are you familiar with the trainwrecks that are Repo: The Genetic Opera and The Devil's Carnival? It's basically horror movie producers secretly wanting to make their own version of Le Miz with no budget. I've both terrified by this things and cannot look away. Well, from the trailers, I mean. I dont' think I could sit through them.
  1:09pm
Cheri Pi:

No! I'm not...But I'll get familiar.
  1:09pm
Cecile:

we could do a musical about a horror movie producer who wants to make his version of Le Miz but no one understands him. And he takes up killin'. or something like that.
  1:10pm
Cecile:

it's the kind of WTF? I didn't think existed any more. Zip through YouTube and you'll see stuff.
  1:10pm
eyenoise:

I saw the reunited original line up of Gang Of Four including Hugo in 2005. I was a stunning experience.
  1:11pm
Cecile:

I dunno, call it "killing is my business...and business is good." I'm sure that title has never been used before.
  1:11pm
Cheri Pi:

As long as RickRubin is the first victim I will personally fund this project. I accept.
  1:11pm
Cecile:

damn, eyenoise. I saw them with Sara Lee, who was great, but with Dave Allen?
  1:12pm
Cecile:

I kinda like Rick Rubin. He signed Trouble for 2 albums, girl!
  1:12pm
jon barmak:

Dianne your questions are lazy lazy lazy... "tell us how this came about?" ad nauseum
  1:12pm
Cecile:

But we could do a Rubin-like character.
  1:13pm
joe:

Not familir with Devi's Carnival and Repo is pretty bad as a whole, but the proformences are pretty cool. So if you can grit your teeth through the rest of the crap there are some jems in the music sense.
  1:13pm
Cheri Pi:

agreed. Rubinesque.
  1:14pm
Cecile:

jon, it works for her. Gets people talking.
  1:15pm
Cecile:

exactly.
Devil's Carnival might be a bit better.
But anyway, yeah, the whole idea calls out for a POWER METAL CONCEPT ALBUM.
  1:16pm
cubicle carl:

@jon barmak I think Diane's questions are great. Just what fans want to know.
  1:16pm
Nate:

Question for Hugo: Who has been the greatest influence on your life - as a drummer, a Dad, and a teacher? Very best ~ Nate.
  1:17pm
Cecile:

I would have never pegged him for being a Creedence fan! Great stories.
  1:18pm
Cheri Pi:

It works for me too Jon, the details in these interviews are are intimate and wouldn't be revealed elsewhere. Plus we can ask him questions so post some of your own.
  1:19pm

'ccr was the first band i ever saw live' - that is just precious.
  1:21pm

I'm very happy for CCR fans right now.

I just hit the Big 50 myself and remember seeing Gang of Four at Hurrah & Irving Place back in 1980. FANTASTIC!!! Great music then and now.
  1:25pm
joe:

Love me the Monkey Man up there as one of my Stones Favs.
  1:25pm
chris:

CCR, Stones... I need a smoke and a beer... Fookin ell, following a Hawkwind tour, did I hear? Insane! Nice interview, Diane, as always. I couldn't disagree with Jon more...
  1:28pm
Cheri Pi:

[cracks beer open]

Satchmo "Monkey Feet" Infidado:

Wish I didn't have to go but have too!!!! The fight continues.... Keep busting out the tunes and the minds turning..... Great stuff!!!!

I was at the Irving Plaza show in '80 as well. A week later it was the Slits at Irving Plaza. I tried to start a chat with this pretty girl who was at both shows all alone. She gave me the shoulder.

I was at those shows in 1980 as well...so great!
  1:30pm
chris:

did you give Carl the shoulder, Diane? :-)
  1:31pm
Cheri Pi:

I"m going to give CCR another chance.
  1:31pm
SteveL:

This set is fascinating. The change in music in the late 70s was so rebelliously dramatic that it was easy to forget that it, like all music, was influence by much of what came before.
Avatar 1:31pm
kamikaze:

Ha! Who knows!!! I was quite a punk then; definitely not very friendly. Sorry Carl!!

It's Ok, Diane. I loved you from a distance.

I LOVE IT. CCR, the Stones, the Who, hell yeah!!!! (And by the way I was at that show at Irving Plaza, one of the first bands I ever saw!). LOVE YOUR WORK HUGO.

Cheri there are some "non hit" CCR jems out there.
  1:36pm

RAMBLE TAMBLE!!!
  1:38pm

Thanks Joe-I'll check it out. I'll listen to the Minutemen covering them first as a way of getting my feet wet.
  1:41pm

Yeah and they are a great band to find in your local dollar vinyl bin.
  1:46pm

Diane-this is one of the best peer pressure segments yet!

who was he saying couldn't play together due to contractual issues?
  1:48pm
Hugo B:

Mick Ronson and Mott The Hoople
  1:48pm
KP:

This is all so great. Who would think given a chance to play the Who, it would be Quad?
  1:51pm
Cheri Pi:

thanks Hugo!
  1:56pm
Cecile:

I think that's so funny how Free influences people really don't sound like them. Like Paul Young, the pop singer, got turned onto soul by reading interviews with Free.
  2:00pm
Cecile:

I'd love to hear Chris Cornell do this. I think he's a lot like Paul Rogers - he can't sing everything, but when he's got the right song, he's unbeatable.

The right thing for Paul Rogers, however, doesn't include any Queen songs
  2:01pm
Greta Brinkman:

Hi Diane! Could you please ask Hugo what he remembers of the GoF gig opening for the B-52's in November of 1979 at the Electric Ballroom? I was there, remember being so struck by the Gang of Four.
  2:03pm

Robert Wyatt didn't actually write "Shipbuilding", he covered it. It was originally written by Elvis Costello and Clive Langer.
