BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

There are two hours each week when my interwebs aren't tuned to WFMU. 'Cause I'm listening to Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service on BBC6. :P
  12:12am
Jack:

Joe! And maybe Maby.
  12:12am
Julie:

Joe Jackson..the good one not the evil one
  12:13am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

The best worst seats I have ever had were for a Joe Jackson concert.
  12:14am
David K:

Wow! Human Switchboard. Thanks for that, I knew these guys back in the day and I was astounded to hear it. I haven't had that vinyl out in 15 years.

Front row. I couldn't see Joe's face because of the piano and all. But I had a great view of Joe from the waist down. :\

Therese:

Obstructed view, huh?
  12:17am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Hee!
  12:18am
Jack:

Funny, BadGuy: I have one of those legendary Bruce stories where i was pulled from a crappy seat and put in the front row. And when he sat at the piano (was the solo Devils & Dust tour), i couldn't see him at all.
  12:24am
Tom - K'way Bklyn:

Hiya Therese , Hiya kiddles,, great set !!!
  12:25am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Three or four songs into the show Joe stood up, peaked over the piano, looked right at me and waved. He then mentioned that there were empty seats in the rows behind me that might afford a better view.

His drummer at that show was playing an entirely synthetic drum kit. It took a bit to get used to hearing the drums emanating from the PA and not his actual kit.

@Therese: I totally utilized a similar train strategy when I was up there in June.

Hello Jack! And Tom! And KP! And Julie! And David K! And Droll!
  12:35am
KP:

Hi!
  12:35am
Jeff:

Cocktails, woo. Just enjoyed a cocktail (the Black Manhattan) whose recipe was passed on by Mr. Gottschalk. Takes the Manhattan in a dark, twisted, Italian-herbal direction - good for Negroni fanciers.
  12:36am
KP:

how do people who get on in manhattan but not at herald square ever get on, let alone a seat at rush hour?
Avatar 12:41am
Therese:

It's normally crowded, but not impossible
Avatar 12:42am
Therese:

Jeff, I'm not much of a Negroni fancier, but that cocktail sounds delicious. I will have to hit up Mr. Gottschalk for the recipe.
  12:47am
Jeff:

Kath told me about a time a few days ago when she saw a downtown/JC train at 9th or 14th street whic had absolutely no room for anyone else to get on... but she did anyway, kind of like the stories you hear about Tokyo trains (but without the passenger-packing pushers). She said the whole trip was surfing in a sea of humanity with no way to reach something to hold on to, but no possibility of falling down because people were packed in so tightly. Her feet got oddly tired because she found she was trying to hang onto the floor with her toes to avoid bumping into people at the train driver jerked forward and back, but that didn't actually accomplish much and really all the sardine people were remarkably understanding of the shared situation.
  12:50am
Julie:

Hmm now I always thought this was Nick cave w/ Kylie, not the other way around
  12:50am
Chop Scott:

Therese! Rats--I thought I saw you as I was getting off the Path train coming back from the station Friday night. So sorry to not say hello!
Avatar 12:53am
Therese:

Scott- did you get off at 14th? I think I saw you as the doors were closing.
Avatar 12:55am
Therese:

I definitely think of that as a Nick Cave song first and foremost, Julie. But it's Kylie's world. We just live in it.
  12:55am
Chop Scott:

Yes, I was indeed hopping off there---sorry to miss you.
  12:57am
sugarwolf:

Hmm tonight's show is sounding a lot like what I was listening to in college.
  12:59am
Jeff:

Don't let me discourage you from chatting with the erudite Mr. Kurt, but here's the formula for that cocktail:

Black Manhattan:
2 oz. bourbon
1-½ oz. Punt e Mes vermouth
½ oz. Amaro Averna
1-2 dashes Angostura bitters

(I've tried some minor variations, including substituting good orange bitters like Bitter Truth for some or all of the Angostura - you can figure where to turn the dial between that nice complex bitter orange and the big clove notes in Angostura - and substituting someone else's amaro just 'cause I didn't have the specified one on the shelf - but the basic formula puts you in a fertile neighborhood if you like those flavors)
  1:07am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Somebody didn't put the space in the right place. I was reading along and "joint he" made me do a double-take as well.
  1:12am
Jack:

Yes, I too was on an island.
  1:17am
Jeff:

I was on this island, not too many blocks from the WFMU studio:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCtxfhS-19Q

It was entirely too watery. Improbably watery. Jersey City isn't supposed to be freakin' Venice.
  1:24am
Jeff:

Oh, so about that Balboa set you mentioned (which will be on Scott's show later today): they tickled my earholes in a very pleasing way. And their assemblage of vintage analog-synth goodness needs to be seen as well as heard. So here are the pictures:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbm0/sets/72157631988008140/

Better, page through them one by one on a real computer with a nice big monitor starting here:

  2:22am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

This Peoples Temple track sounds like some long, lost Echo & The Bunnymen demo.
  2:24am
Nick:

I was just thinking the same thing!
  2:24am
KP:

You've actually seen Lisztomania? Dont think it made DVD.
  2:31am
Nick:

Having seen Lisztomania when it came out, I will input this into the conversation...It was totally absurd & crazy, in that Ken Russell genius sort of way, but not as good as some of his other films.
  2:34am
KP:

Sounds fair. Ive seen many of his films. There's always something there but despite devotion to the Who, or maybe because of it, never sought this one out.
  2:35am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

@KP: I went through a Ken Russell phase shortly after graduating from high school. "Lair of the White Worm" set it off. A local video store had a "cult/midnight movies" section that contained a copy of Lisztomania.

Around fifteen years ago I met Theresa Russell and had a complete geek-out moment asking her about what he was like (yes, I know they weren't related).
  2:37am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

By the way, Lisztomania is available on DVD from Warner Archives. One of those "manufactured on demand" discs that probably uses an old VHS copy as the master.
  2:39am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Therese as Raven. No "the." Just Raven. *hee!*
  2:43am
KP:

THanks. BGZ. Just realized i saw one at least one more than i thought, Billion Dollar Brain recently going trough a Deighton phase.
  2:44am
KP:

Lair of White Worm was amazingly entertaining.
  2:50am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Lair of the White Worm is the one Hugh Grant movie everyone needs to see.
  2:51am
Nick:

Ha haven't thought of Lair of the White Worm in ages...saw that when it came out too. LOL
  2:53am
KP:

Thanks for tip BGZ, just ordered "Liztomania"!
Just happened to have my credit card out, as im sure all of Therese's listeners do tonight.
  2:54am
Nick:

Now you've gotten me looking online to remind myself of his other films. I'd forgotten he also did Altered States! That was a good one.
  2:54am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

I think I still have LotWW on laserdisc.

Let me know how that DVD is quality-wise. Those Warner Archives titles are hit-and-miss in that regard.
  2:57am
Nick:

Lair of the White Worm has only a 57% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Wikipedia. haha
  2:57am
KP:

Sure. Seeing the Who soon, 46 years later.
  2:58am
Nick:

Better let than never...maybe ??
  2:59am
KP:

Close to 90%!
  2:59am
Nick:

late
  3:00am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

@KP: Let me know how that Who show is. The closest they're coming to me is Tulsa. I've been mulling it over. They're playing "Quadrophenia" from start-to-finish. I like that record. The movie? Not so much.

I've never seen The Who either.
  3:00am
KP:

Ive seen them many times, including that long ago.
  3:00am
Nick:

Sad news Therese
  3:01am
KP:

Goodbye, Therese. Awesome show.
  3:02am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Have a great week, Therese! Same to all the listeners and commenters and ameDeo. Until next time...
  3:03am
Nick:

KP, if you saw The Who in 1966, you are one lucky guy.
