The tryptophan is finally wearing off, just in time for Monday. Hi Jeffs, hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Jeff J:

Hey James & Carmichael - Thanks for joining us. Glad the tryptophan is in remission and you're doing Cyber Monday right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm

RIP to the great Pete L. Sims

Jeff J:

Too too many jazz deaths this year, Dan. Pete was a big loss, for sure. This tune by him lives up to its name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Martha:

What a brilliant record this is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Jeff J:

Thanks Duke - and welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm

Welcome Martha - and totally agree on LaRoca joint.

Doug S.:

Never enough Jeffs, I say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Jeff J:

This Bley tune is our tribute to 2012 - the year of jazz death. Which ones have hit you hardest?

Jeff J:

Like Jeff G says, if you can contribute to WFMU to help repair all the damage from Sandy, it would be hugely helpful and appreciated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Jeff J:

All brutal losses. I was especially sad about Ware as I thought he'd been doing better - plus he was making some of his very best music. There are some other titans currently in ailing health, but I'm too scared to even type their names.

Doug S.:

Braxton came to Oberlin for a week-long master class and then concert when I was there in the early '80s. This was a few years after he had come and recorded his "Four Orchestras" piece for Arista. I interviewed him for the college radio station. I remember calling him where he was staying to set up the interview and he was brief with me on the phone because he wanted to get back to watching the NCAA college basketball tournament. I was just floored to imagine the legendary Braxton digging college basketball. It was like learning in kindergarden that your teacher went to the bathroom like everyone else. Awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Jeff J:

That's awesome Braxton is a college bball fan. There's some funny and unexpected stuff in "Forces in Motion" about him constantly eating at McDonald's on tour and mocking the vegetarians in his group.

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...
Richard in Oak Park, Illinois, has moved the needle in the right direction. THANK YOU RICHARD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Jeff J:

Thank you Richard! That's incredibly kind and generous of you -- money very well spent on this Cyber Monday!
THANK YOU!

Alf from Upstate:

Cheesy lite makes me think of part-skim ricotta. Blech.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Jeff J:

Accidentally deleted my comment - but yes, Alf, blech seems the right reaction anything cheesy lite. Jazz especially.

Jeff J:

Being released on FMP, "Berlin Skyscraper" never got its full due in the U.S. Critic / Burnt Sugar maestro Greg Tate calls it one of the all-time great jazz albums. What're your Butch Morris fave releases / appearances?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Bill T.:

Current Trends in Racism is a stunning work. I still really appreciate hearing Butch's cornet. Some of his performances on David Murray recordings are memorable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Jeff J:

Bill T - Current Trends coming up! A great work, for sure. Butch's cornet playing is undervalued, even by him. I agree that he's a wonderful soloist. Interesting how those Murray records were canonical in the 90s, but few people seem to talk about them today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Doug S.:

Does "jazz" have a better anthem than "Let the Music Take You"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Jeff J:

Post "The Clock," I keep forgetting about Christian Marclay the musician. I was surprised to remember that he's on this album. And a number of fine downtown jazz releases from the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Jeff J:

Doug - That's a great tune! Been a while since I've heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm
Jeff J:

Too much Fela is never enough! I remember the first time Jeff G and I heard "Gentleman" and the top of our heads being knocked to the ceiling. It was everything we wanted post-James Brown funk to be - so hard, so aggressive, so complex, and pleasurable.

Ya'll out there have fave Fela joints? Or ones you think are slept on within his massive discography?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Dervish:

Where to begin with Fela? I've always been partial to "Coffin for Head of State."

One more CYBER MONDAY reminder: No better way to spend your money today than a pledge to WFMU to help them repair the damage from Sandy and continue their exceptional programming. Just sayin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
Jeff J:

Thanks Listener James! Appreciate you tuning in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
Doug S.:

This Fefer track is gorgeous. The melody has a lovely whiff of "Send in the Clowns" to it. I mean that as a compliment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Jeff J:

Dervish - "Coffin" is indeed a great one. "Confusion" has also been a fave around these parts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
Jeff J:

Doug - Jeff G gets credit for the Fefer find. I agree it's a gem. He also gets credit for us going a bit overtime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
