	12:24pm Doug S.: Great to see that WFMU is, overall, sitting at 92% of our goal. Remember that all but one of the shows on Give the Drummer Radio reached 100% of their original goals, back when the fundraiser was "silent" during the month of October. Hurricane Sandy whooshed a wrench into those plans, and WFMU had to rev back up the campaign into Disaster Relief mode. Blessings to ALL who've gotten us this close to covering the $250,000+ cost of the storm to WFMU's battered infrastructure and lost revenue. During tough times, everyone — especially the devoted Drummer Stream community — has come through brilliantly. We. Are. So. Close.

	12:46pm tonyc: As far as I can remember, the first record I bought with my own money was this one: www.amazon.com... I didn't know what the hell it was, but it was like 50 cents and the weird cover drew me in.

	12:49pm Jeremy: Hey Tony, how is that other Peter Howell record, Through the Looking Glass?
	12:50pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: A large part of my record experience as a very young lad was looking at all the weird cover art on records in the cut-out bin at my local drug store. It didn't occur to me that I could nag my parents to give me the money to buy them. I didn't get my own record player until I was around 13 or so.
	12:50pm tonyc: @ Jeremy: I don't like it as much -- but it is good too.
	12:53pm Jeremy: That first purchase explains so much! Mine was the Beatles' Something New...so pedestrian
	12:55pm tonyc: @ Ricardotron Montalbanics: I still buy (cheap) records based on their covers all the time. I've gotten it down to a science: nice cover image, plus right liner-notes font, plus not-too-scary haircuts = take a chance. Oh, plus no fluegelhorn or pedal steel.
	12:57pm tonyc: Unless, of course, they're the right kind of scary haircut.
	12:57pm Jeremy: The record pickings in Buffalo were quite slim, didn't start buying them really until moving to NYC metro area. But we did have a place called Rent-a-Record!
	12:59pm tonyc: Rent-a-Record! They didn't actually let you rent records, did they -- like a video store?
	1:01pm Jeremy: Yep, just like it sounds! A paid library of vinyl.
	1:02pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: the closest thing to renting records I can recall was a Music Land that was run by a really nice lady named Pat who used to let me exchange records all the time when I was a teenager. I think it ended when their record wholesaler complained about all the returns coming from her store. Then she disappeared and the chain was bought out by Sam Goody.
	1:04pm tonyc: Ah, Sam Goody! They used to have a huge store in Manhattan in the west 40s that had nothing but cutouts, mostly for under a dollar. I discovered tons of great records there, until they got shut down for bootlegging.
	1:05pm Jeremy: Did a little google and found this in a 1982 Billboard article entitled "Did RCA roll back price hike?" "Lenny Silver, the Buffalo one-stop/retailer...stated that the RCA 4% move would increase the number of rent-a-record stores in his area."
	1:08pm Jeremy: The Godz met while working at that Sam Goody, was it 48th St?
	1:10pm Jeremy: I knew a kid who treated Tower Records as a rent-a-record, he would warp slightly in the oven any LP he didn't fancy and return it...until they banned him and put up his polaroid on the wall.
	1:10pm tonyc: Yes, I think it was 48th. If memory serves, it shut down in the early '80s or thereabouts.
	1:12pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: I remember some clown in my town tried to start up a CD rental business. I think it lasted about a month, sometime in the late 80s.
	1:13pm tonyc: I'm thinking of starting a food rental business. Be Kind: Regurgitate.
	1:14pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: I read somewhere that record wholesalers used to have a really liberal return policy with retailers but then revoked it in order to force retailers to stop stocking as much LPs in favor of CDs, which they were previously hesitant to embrace due to the price difference. I have no idea of this was true but I read it somewhere.
	1:14pm BSI: Clown music is a tricky market, clearly....
	1:15pm Jeremy: I was in Japan in 1990 and went to a rent-a-CD place, I was very excited to be able to make a cassette copy of the Ron Asheton project The New Order.
	1:17pm tonyc: I've been looking for that rare New Order album "Ron Asheton."
	1:20pm tonyc: Never heard of rent-an LP or rent-a-CD stores. Don't think there were any in NYC. Wouldn't the LPs in particular be pretty scratched up?
	1:22pm tonyc: Moonlight, on now, were Finnish, but sound totally American to me. (Except for the slight accent, of course.)
	1:25pm Jeremy: I think that they checked the condition and would charge you if you really scratched it! But I am sure they probably incurred quite a bit wear. The business model is compeltely baffling to me, but I was only 12. We left when I was 13, so who knows how long they were around? I went back there 10 yrs ago and there was a record shop still in that location. Tower on 66th & Broadway used to take back any CD, even after being opened, long after the advent of CD burners.
	1:27pm Jeremy: I'd love to hear New Order covering The New Order.
	1:29pm Jeremy: Does it seem as if "international" bands that most successfully ape American and UK styles are also the most consistently uninteresting?
	1:30pm Jeremy: With exceptions, of course.
	1:30pm Snortley: There was always the option of taking out LPs and CDs from libraries, and recording copies. My girlfriend once hosted a visitor from Brazil in the 1990s who immediately bought 2 VCRs and spent 2 weeks duping videos from Kim's. Hardly saw anything else of NY.

	1:31pm tonyc: @ Jeremy: In general, yes, I agree absolutely. Every once in a while, though, the aping is so well aped I forgive them. Greetings Snortley & Uncle Michael!!
	1:34pm Jeremy: @Snortley: Funny to think how much time was spent amassing personal bootleg libraries that can be acquired with the click of a mouse these days. I had two pals who spent years dubbing copies of all the VHS rarities that Kim's Video had to offer with the notion of starting a west coast version of same.
	1:37pm tonyc: @ Snortley: Ah yes, libraries. Used to burn borrowed CDs myself. It was nice too when libraries started dumping LPs en masse. I used to live very close to the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and they got rid of lots of great (and often barely played) LPs. (Not to speak of books!)
	1:38pm Jeremy: Not that Kim's itself was much more than a bootleg operation...the dubious legal doings of underground media production is carried from the roots all the way along to the endpoint of distribution, and not much has changed.
	1:41pm Jeremy: I went to the Lincoln Center library often to listen to records, and one day they were all gone. I asked about it and they said they were all in a dumpster in the basement. When I asked if I could go through them they said no... In Portland, my brother was there when the Multnomah library was getting rid of them but they got word of it so everyone took out the LPs they wanted and kept 'em.
	1:45pm tonyc: I'm pretty sure that Kim's bootlegging activities spread to Russia. There were a bunch of (really nice) Russian guys working there, and I suspect -- based on a store I visited in St. Petersburg -- that at least one of them was bringing CDs from Kim's to be booted in Russia.
	1:46pm Jeremy: Glad you aren't yet finnished with your treats from reindeerland. Love is the big Finnish label then? Any others to look out for?
	1:47pm Jeremy: I think I knew one of those Russian guys, he also had a psych based label.
	1:48pm tonyc: @ Jeremy: Yes, Love was Finland's Silence. The label they turned into in the '80s, Johanna, was good for post-punk and such.
	1:50pm BSI: NICE! Twelve thumbs-up for the Calvert...
	1:52pm tonyc: Just don't set those thumbs on fire!
	1:53pm Jeremy: This Robert Calvert record has super silly songs, but it has such amazing Eno production, maybe his best outside of his own records.
	1:54pm PLEDGE PIN: yeh Jeremy - I think its called legal theft. but anyway where I live in Manchester UK, the city big library was shutting and they had a huge classical section including many avant garde records. To cut a long story short by the time the library shut down I had a large Stockhausen original record collection!
	1:54pm BSI: Curiously, there's a different edit of the Storm Chant between the original vinyl & the CD reissue. Not even a remix; more like a total tape-cut edit, it's really jarring if you're accustomed to one & hear the other...

	1:59pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: Any song on Paranoid instantly transports me back to seventh grade. It was just such a badass album. Have you heard the Venetian Snares Sabbath remixes?

	2:00pm BSI: @Jeremy: at this point I'm not sure which is the original cut. Had the BGO-label CD for ages & that's the one I'm used to. Then finally got the UA-label vinyl (gatefold) and that one appears to be cut differently. But maybe it's the other way 'round, since I'm used to the CD, etc...
	2:01pm PLEDGE PIN: Tony, perhaps only the Comus album equals the Sabbs in dark intensity!
	2:01pm BSI: There's a few cases of re-edits of Calvert & mid-period hawkwind stuff (i.e., the vocals on High Rise, on the HW album PXR5; totally different vocal take between the LP and CD versions) ... sorry for the geek moment there. Will take meds & move on...
	2:01pm tonyc: I've got the BGO Calvert CD myself. Don't notice any overly abrupt tape edits.
	2:03pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: I'm not a huge metal fan but I really think two bands that have the heaviness down are The Melvins and Sunn (((0))). Comus is quite nice, as well.
	2:03pm BSI: TONY: Yep. it was the vinyl one that threw me. The one you played is the one I'm used to. But yeh, I might be seeing reality backwards (again?)
	2:04pm PLEDGE PIN: Ric, of course there was Black Widow, competitor's of the Sabbs in the UK at the time!
	2:07pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: Last year, I downloaded this wonderful comp of 'devil music', compiled by someone calling themselves DJ Goatface Killah. It's all 60's/70's devil/witch/satanic themed stuff. I think Black Widow was on it, but I can't be certain (I don't have it with me). I'll be sure to check that out.

Also, I used to draw that armadillo/tank creature a lot when I was very little.

Remember that all but one of the shows on Give the Drummer Radio reached 100% of their original goals, back when the fundraiser was "silent" during the month of October. Hurricane Sandy whooshed a wrench into those plans, and WFMU had to rev back up the campaign into Disaster Relief mode. Blessings to ALL who've gotten us this close to covering the $250,000+ cost of the storm to WFMU's battered infrastructure and lost revenue. During tough times, everyone — especially the devoted Drummer Stream community — has come through brilliantly. We. Are. So. Close.

	12:50pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: A large part of my record experience as a very young lad was looking at all the weird cover art on records in the cut-out bin at my local drug store. It didn't occur to me that I could nag my parents to give me the money to buy them. I didn't get my own record player until I was around 13 or so.

	12:55pm tonyc: @ Ricardotron Montalbanics: I still buy (cheap) records based on their covers all the time. I've gotten it down to a science: nice cover image, plus right liner-notes font, plus not-too-scary haircuts = take a chance. Oh, plus no fluegelhorn or pedal steel.

	12:57pm Jeremy: The record pickings in Buffalo were quite slim, didn't start buying them really until moving to NYC metro area. But we did have a place called Rent-a-Record!
	12:59pm tonyc: Rent-a-Record! They didn't actually let you rent records, did they -- like a video store?
	1:01pm Jeremy: Yep, just like it sounds! A paid library of vinyl.
	1:02pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: the closest thing to renting records I can recall was a Music Land that was run by a really nice lady named Pat who used to let me exchange records all the time when I was a teenager. I think it ended when their record wholesaler complained about all the returns coming from her store. Then she disappeared and the chain was bought out by Sam Goody.
	1:04pm tonyc: Ah, Sam Goody! They used to have a huge store in Manhattan in the west 40s that had nothing but cutouts, mostly for under a dollar. I discovered tons of great records there, until they got shut down for bootlegging.
	1:05pm Jeremy: Did a little google and found this in a 1982 Billboard article entitled "Did RCA roll back price hike?" "Lenny Silver, the Buffalo one-stop/retailer...stated that the RCA 4% move would increase the number of rent-a-record stores in his area."
	1:08pm Jeremy: The Godz met while working at that Sam Goody, was it 48th St?
	1:10pm Jeremy: I knew a kid who treated Tower Records as a rent-a-record, he would warp slightly in the oven any LP he didn't fancy and return it...until they banned him and put up his polaroid on the wall.
	1:10pm tonyc: Yes, I think it was 48th. If memory serves, it shut down in the early '80s or thereabouts.
	1:12pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: I remember some clown in my town tried to start up a CD rental business. I think it lasted about a month, sometime in the late 80s.

	1:14pm Ricardotron Montalbanics: I read somewhere that record wholesalers used to have a really liberal return policy with retailers but then revoked it in order to force retailers to stop stocking as much LPs in favor of CDs, which they were previously hesitant to embrace due to the price difference. I have no idea of this was true but I read it somewhere.
	1:14pm BSI: Clown music is a tricky market, clearly....
	1:15pm Jeremy: I was in Japan in 1990 and went to a rent-a-CD place, I was very excited to be able to make a cassette copy of the Ron Asheton project The New Order.
	1:17pm tonyc: I've been looking for that rare New Order album "Ron Asheton."
	1:20pm tonyc: Never heard of rent-an LP or rent-a-CD stores. Don't think there were any in NYC. Wouldn't the LPs in particular be pretty scratched up?
	1:22pm tonyc: Moonlight, on now, were Finnish, but sound totally American to me. (Except for the slight accent, of course.)
	1:25pm Jeremy: I think that they checked the condition and would charge you if you really scratched it! But I am sure they probably incurred quite a bit wear. The business model is compeltely baffling to me, but I was only 12. We left when I was 13, so who knows how long they were around? I went back there 10 yrs ago and there was a record shop still in that location. Tower on 66th & Broadway used to take back any CD, even after being opened, long after the advent of CD burners.
	1:27pm Jeremy: I'd love to hear New Order covering The New Order.
	1:29pm Jeremy: Does it seem as if "international" bands that most successfully ape American and UK styles are also the most consistently uninteresting?
	1:30pm Jeremy: With exceptions, of course.
	1:30pm Snortley: There was always the option of taking out LPs and CDs from libraries, and recording copies. My girlfriend once hosted a visitor from Brazil in the 1990s who immediately bought 2 VCRs and spent 2 weeks duping videos from Kim's. Hardly saw anything else of NY.

	1:34pm Jeremy: @Snortley: Funny to think how much time was spent amassing personal bootleg libraries that can be acquired with the click of a mouse these days. I had two pals who spent years dubbing copies of all the VHS rarities that Kim's Video had to offer with the notion of starting a west coast version of same.
	1:37pm tonyc: @ Snortley: Ah yes, libraries. Used to burn borrowed CDs myself. It was nice too when libraries started dumping LPs en masse. I used to live very close to the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and they got rid of lots of great (and often barely played) LPs. (Not to speak of books!)
	1:38pm Jeremy: Not that Kim's itself was much more than a bootleg operation...the dubious legal doings of underground media production is carried from the roots all the way along to the endpoint of distribution, and not much has changed.
	1:41pm Jeremy: I went to the Lincoln Center library often to listen to records, and one day they were all gone. I asked about it and they said they were all in a dumpster in the basement. When I asked if I could go through them they said no... In Portland, my brother was there when the Multnomah library was getting rid of them but they got word of it so everyone took out the LPs they wanted and kept 'em.
	1:45pm tonyc: I'm pretty sure that Kim's bootlegging activities spread to Russia. There were a bunch of (really nice) Russian guys working there, and I suspect -- based on a store I visited in St. Petersburg -- that at least one of them was bringing CDs from Kim's to be booted in Russia.

	1:47pm Jeremy: I think I knew one of those Russian guys, he also had a psych based label.

To cut a long story short by the time the library shut down I had a large Stockhausen original record collection!
