Favoriting January 23, 2013: Mary Blount and Jeremy Thompson, authors of Wired Up!, live in studio!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Wired Up! presents a history of early/mid-'70s glam rock in picture sleeves. Specifically, seven-inch picture sleeves. Even more specifically, European glam-rock seven-inch picture sleeves. Authors Mary Blount and Jeremy Thompson have assembled a gorgeous collection of actual-size reproductions of over 300 sleeves, printed on high-quality paper in riotous color, and they brought a whole bunch of those records (as well as some not included in the book) to play on tonight's show (since you can't look at a book through the radio). We spent the first half of the show talking about the book and playing records, but then scaled back the talking for the second half so we could fit in more music. If you like what you hear I urge you to visit wiredupbook.com to find out more about (and order!) the book.

The advantage of being a "good girl" was getting away with absolute murder, smoking (& drinking) in the girls' room included. Oh, those were the days.

Yep, I was the winner of the English Dept award for seniors. O:-) *I* certainly wouldn't be smoking in the boys room during class change when the principal walked in.

What's the release date on the book? -- The amazon page (bit.ly link above) gives a 2012 release date, but says it's only available for pre-order??? I don't see that combination very often on amazon...

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Parq:

For what it's worth, I was hanging ca. 1979 with a group of people who steered from punk back into glam. A lot of us had scorned glam in the early 70s -- mostly, I am constrained to admit, for homophobic reasons. From Costello and the Clash, it was a pretty easy step backward into Bowie and Roxie, and we sort of took it from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Fuzzy:

Wow, this is The Sweet? Sounds like The 1910 Fruitgum Co!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
G:

Oh yeah, Fuzzy, check The Sweet on wiki etc. They bumped around as a bubblegum group for 3-4 years before making it as a glam group. Check the name -- The Sweet :)

I'll have to fill the years in later, but they're all from about 1971-1976. Thanks for listening!
Avatar 10:53pm
Holly in NC:

Finally, here! Query: why is/was "glam" used as a epithet, when pretty much all the best and indeed hardest, rockingest *pop* songs I heard in my suburban 70s US dystopia would now be categorized as glam?
My non-rockin' mother HATED my Fox on the Run 7" - of course she also hated Captain & Tennille ('cuz via their cover of "Shop Around" they promoted sex before marriage (!)). Mum did like ac/dc (thought they had a good beat - she TOTALLY did not get 'big balls') bless her naive little heart. No wonder I smoked in the girls' room ;-)

Hi Evan! speaking about 'wired up'... how about some Teenage Lust & the Lustettes?!?
really enjoying the show tonight.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
G:

glam/glitter didn't have a negative vibe in the UK when I lived there 72-74. T Rex was proto-glam, and he was the biggest thing going over there in 71-72. -- I believe punk *later* (mid 70s) slammed the glam to gain leverage by pushing it aside (they did the same to prog, of course)
  11:08pm
Ignore Function:

Great music!
Avatar 11:08pm
Holly in NC:

Just meant "glam" often equates with "bubblegum" as music not to be taken seriously, connotes manufactured, for children/adolescents etc.

Personally, I take Suzi Quatro very seriously !
Avatar 11:10pm
Droll:

G, Prog was pushed aside? Did I miss a memo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Parq:

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that a lot of the stigma "glam" had in the U.S. was because a lot of its trappings -- eye make-up, glittery clothing, high-pitched singing voices -- were associated in a lot of Americans' minds with what little they knew of gay culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
G:

Like Suzi, I was a 1971 export from southeast Michigan to the UK :)
  11:11pm
Rickwaukee:

went and made me check out "Run Joey Run" on the YTube
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
G:

It's OK, Droll, prog is still there. Just not trendy. And NEVER in the R&RHOF!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
G:

Hey, Droll, remember the cover of Tormato with Yes in leather jackets? Don't tell me they didn't feel punk pushing them aside :)
  11:15pm
john:

It's just been pointed out to me, quite rightly, that Rodney Bingenheimer sure tried to make glam take off in the US with his English Disco, and if it couldn't take hold for too long in LA, it wasn't going to catch on anywhere else here. And probably not a makeup issue there, either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
G:

In 72, all the with-it teens in the UK knew Bowie, from "Changes" onward, was a majorly gay thing. We knew that and talked about it! It was so rebellious to be interested in it! :)
Avatar 11:17pm
Holly in NC:

@G - *that* is an amazing point ;-)
I treasure all my, er pre-Tormato Yes lps.
Avatar 11:19pm
Droll:

Do I remember Tormato? Not when I have a choice.

My formative years coincide with all the prog bands successfully transitioning to pop: Genesis, Yes, and Asia all made legit chart toppers. A bunch of other acts tried (3, GTR, etc.) and came close. The door got slammed on them when hair metal guys were the ones in makeup and big hair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
G:

@Holly: Probably the record company forced the leather on them. The tomato splat on that album was supposedly in hommage to Wakeman throwing a tomato against a copy of the cover picture in annoyance at how horrible it was.
Avatar 11:23pm

Wait - there was an actual mention of the band "3" on the WFMU comment board and I was not the one to make it. Now I genuinely am stunned.

There was quite the regrettable cover of "Eight Miles High" on that album.

@G comment above re Yes jackets.
I didn't know gay from whimsical 'til my 16th birthday when my very very very best male friend from 6th grade on took me to an underground restaurant in New Haven where I was the only female patron, and the post dinner stage show opened with "It's Raining Men". You can't make this shit up.
My beloved Tim also introduced me to Neil Young, the Sex Pistols, Metal Machine Music, poppers, Rocky Horror, Liquid Sky, frogs' legs & escargot.
Dear god I miss him (yes, AIDs)

Meanwhile my boyfriend boyfriend took me to see Rush at the Coliseum ;-)

@Holly: My brother died of AIDS in 96. We didn't know he was gay till he tested positive in 91; he kept his own counsel, and we all lived in different parts of the US. Before 91, that he was a Catholic priest during the 80s.

Avatar 11:33pm
Holly in NC:

Did he choose to leave the church on his own terms?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
G:

He was always a priest. Once a priest always a priest, that's how they see it. He was not given a parish, though, and worked as a librarian in the 90s.

But when he died the area bishop celebrated the Mass. The bishop had been the priest who had picked him up from the airport when he went into the seminary in the mid 80s. The Mass made the front page of the Tampa/Clearwater paper, because the bishop doing that was a big step.
