Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm efd:

Hey, thanks for stopping by the Fifth Not-Quite-Annual InterActiv™ Record Fair Listening Party! The party begins at 9pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, but in the meantime take a look at the list of records I bought at Sunday's record fair and leave a comment here telling me what you want to hear!
  11:07pm Joe B:

A Village People twinspin™: Hot Cop from Cruisin and of course Food Fight from Renaissance!
  11:07pm SteveL:

Well, "Don't Eat Bricks" is the first obvious choice.
"Nervous Breakdown" by Brian Briggs, because I gotta know.
"Klean Livin Kids"
"Sounds of Sound" (obvious #2)
More Harry Harrison? Perfect.
  11:08pm Paulie B:

That "Laughing at the Ground" 7" is amazing. The 21-645 is probably the best tune on it. Also, if you could play whatever that power pop 45 you bought from Chunk Warner was, that would be awesome.
  11:09pm Paulie B:

And that's CHUCK Warner. Not Chunk. Sorry, Chuck.
  11:14pm Joe D.:

George Baker Selection!!!

Also Altered Images. And who were the Stukas???
  11:17pm jeff k:

Yachts -Love you Love you
  11:22pm KP:

"Up to You" by the Stoat.
  11:23pm Gregory:

Please play Monster Rap.
  6:36am jtkantor:

I've never heard the Cortez/Youngblood collaboration; I'm intrigued!
  12:46pm Mike Sin:

Anything off of your favorite find -- the Gotham "Void Where Inhibited" LP -- but I want Sherri to front-announce it on air because she dug and unearthed it!
  12:53pm TCJimmy:

The Dave Baby Cortez record is a burner! I recommend Side A Track 1 The Lemon Drop.
  1:10pm steve:

was just this morning listening to the Cristina s/t picked up at a previous FMU record fair! how about "La Poupee qui Fait Non"?
  1:12pm Cal Zone!:

Those Harry Harrison 'In' Sound records are always BOSS! Also anything 'Spizz' gets my endorsement!
  1:22pm Ajax:

I'd like to hear Dexy's Midnight Runners : There There My Dear, thanks. Also are you a millionaire? You bought so many records! KC's "Please Don't Go" from Do You Wanna Go Party is my jam.
  2:50pm Danne D:

Hey EFD! Hey Funk Fans!

Um....so there's like no music right now...confused

j/k :)

Btw, folks when Evan was at the record fair there was a point where we was standing next to a rack of records with dividers (part of a seller's table) and everyone who passed by just assumed they were all his purchases.

  2:51pm Danne D:

Did the Flirts do "Jukebox"? surely I hope we hear that tonight if that's the case

  3:07pm herb.nyc:

uh, why not play ALL of the purchases in random order? (someone mentioned HARRY HARRISON - as i love his voice, suuuuuuuuuure)
  5:25pm Lisa:

Hi. I request Radio Kids. :-)
  7:56pm Elizabeth:

Up to You!- by The Stoat
  9:03pm Kat in Chicago:

Wow, "AC/DC Man" is already exceeding my expectations!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Indian and Construction Worker:

I got to be AC-DC man!!!!
  9:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

What would Mr. Drummond want to hear? RIP
  9:06pm Holly in NC:

Cosign "Laughing at the Ground" . And SPIZZenergi 2, Athletico SPIZZ, & the SPIZZles, I mean c'mon! sssppppiiizzzzz
(won't be able to listen til 10:30ish, btw)
  9:08pm steve:

aww yeah
  9:10pm Lisa:

Yay! Thanks, Evan!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm efd:

You're welcome Lisa! Holly, I'm afraid the listening party is going to wrap up at around 10! You'll have to check the archive I guess. :(
  9:12pm Holly in NC:

Archives no chore, I live in the archives, so to speak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm efd:

and hi/thanks everyone for listening and requesting!
  9:13pm john:

Great haul! Hmm, well, it's kind of mandatory for me to call out Be-Bop Deluxe, though Modern Music is a record I rarely listen to. Maybe "Kiss of Light?"
  9:13pm Joe B:

" accepted under duress as a "gift" from a dealer" have to hear this story at some point! maybe not suitable for the airwaves?
  9:15pm SteveL:

I'm late, and Gotham led the show.
  9:17pm SteveL:

goodbye cruel world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm efd:

It's the archives for you too, SteveL! You also missed one of your requests!

Joe B, definitely suitable for the airwaves, but probably not as interesting as what anyone is imagining.
  9:18pm SteveL:

I have no purpose. No meaning. Gotham is lost to me. Until later, at least.
  9:21pm john:

I'm having a WLIR flashback here. In all the best ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm A Dealer:

efd will never find the hidden chip in his "gift" that will let me get a fix on the location of his supersecret Funk Generator.

And once I know, I WILL RULE THE WORLD BAWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9:24pm SteveL:

The Puppets are tremendous dance music.

"We learn to live with a little pain my dear."

Deep or kinky? Depends on your mood.
  9:27pm SteveL:

Ahhhhhhhh. "Nervous Breakdown" Very interesting.
  9:28pm Ignore Function:

Is that what Yacht rock sounds like? Better than I expected.
  9:30pm SteveL:

Brian Briggs seems to have honed in on a pretty unusual hybrid style. Rocka-devo-dance-hall?
  9:31pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Brian Briggs. Its been what 25 yrs since i heard dat?
  9:33pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Herws a vote for Magazine's "Sweetheart Contract.". Great great song!!
  9:35pm Joe B:

especially Manti Te'o's imagination!
  9:35pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Dario, Can You Get me into Studio 54 is the greatest.
  9:36pm SteveL:

Bob Gruen photo? Very cool.
  9:42pm Cal Zone!:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Parq:

Oh man, Gotham's "Void Where Inhibited"! EFD, don't you remember? Or maybe you weren't down here yet at the time. There was a big-ass billboard for that album shining out on Sheridan Square.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm efd:

Parq, I do not remember that! I was here in 1979. too. Maybe I blocked it out.
  9:49pm SteveL:

Pretty sure "Hot Cop" is my new Village People favorite.

  9:53pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm efd:

sorry Joe, can't do the twinspin™! Too much else to play!
  9:54pm Joe B:

That Dave baby Cortez Lp is great! an all-star lineup in that band on that record!
  9:54pm Joe B:

I hear ya! food fight works any week of the year!
  9:56pm jeanli:

wow what a great song! Altered Images, huh.
  9:58pm Holly in NC:

leaving s/b able to listen soon ... that altered images is a long time fave - Is Julie listening?
  9:59pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Magazine with the utterly great, late John McGeoch on geetar.
  10:01pm paul:

Thank you for putting on this great show :) If I were to win the lottery WFMU is getting a solid $2 million a year
  10:03pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Casablanca Records and Filmworks, no less.
  10:04pm Danne D:

hi Funk Fans :)
hi EFD :)
  10:06pm Cal Zone!:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm G:

1968: The secret of getting ahead is aircraft maintenance. That and plastics.
  10:07pm Cal Zone!:

I hate the military and everything about it...but Harry actually makes it sound appealing!
  10:07pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Steve Estrus told me to get into aircraft maintanance.
  10:09pm steve:

lovely song
  10:12pm Droll:

I forgot rap was all played out and resorted to Monster Rap and Strawberry Shortcake Rap by 1984. Hard to believe rap has been dead for almost 30 years already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm E A Poe:

And then there came a sound of rapping
Rapping on my chamber door
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm efd:

more WLIR flashbacking for you john - in lieu of Be Bop Deluxe, I think. (and of course by request for Danne)
  10:18pm john:

That'll do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm G:

The famed 33/45 midtrack shift strikes again? :)
  10:22pm BadGuyZero [Dallas, TX]:

Hello from chilly Chicago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm efd:

I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm efd:

Hey BGZ! What brings you to Chicago? Going to the Low Times Podcast live show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm G:

hey, I was listening! :)
  10:27pm Kat in Chicago:

The Low Times Podcast live show which I cannot attend. Frowny face.
  10:28pm InBrkly:

Rough Trade was probably the first proper record store I walked into when I was 16 or so. My home town only had a TX chain store called Hastings, but I visited my dad in San Francisco and stumbled into the old Rough Trade location on 16th which was about as big as a walkin closet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm G:

flirts always get a bad rap!
  10:29pm InBrkly:

But I overlooked spizzenergi 2. Must find that.
  10:29pm Kat in Chicago:

The bad rap was Monster Rap. Paine-ful.
  10:30pm Holly in NC:

Ah well. Hi Evan & all!
  10:30pm Barkevious Shabazz:

As i recall the flirts were all complete sea-hags on the cover, bringing exquisite irony to the name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm G:

Historical artefact, Kat :)
  10:31pm Holly in NC:

oooh, but efd, you... I adore you! xoxoxox
  10:32pm steve:

those Bobby O productions has aged surprisingly well... who woulda thought?
  10:32pm Holly in NC:

(I don't even even know if efd has noticed, but this sam flax is my current jam on 'this is my jam')
  10:34pm BadGuyZero [Dallas, TX]:

@efd: Ding-ding-ding-ding-ding! You can make some chicken salad with the chicken dinner you just won.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night. But right now I'm enjoying your mini-record fair acquisitions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm efd:

Awesome, have a great time! I'm sure it will be great.

Kat, I can't believe you can't go! That stinks! (Not that you need me to tell you that.)

Holly, I had indeed noticed your jam - such a great song!

steve, believe me I'm as shocked as anyone. Barkevious, I would say that they each have a very distinct (and similar) look, which may not be to everyone's taste.
  10:46pm SteveL:

Now I have to see the Flirts cover.
  10:47pm Danne D:

These guys were fantastic Sunday :)

Thanks for playing the Flirts EFD :)
  10:47pm BadGuyZero [Dallas, TX]:

@Kat: Are you unable to attend because it sold out? Or do you have a conflicting commitment? I may have an extra ticket if it's the former.
  10:49pm Holly in NC:

Gracious! How the heck did the Relatives end up on Yep Rock? And who knew they were still alive? So excited!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm efd:

SteveL: j.mp...
  10:55pm Danne D:

  11:00pm Brian:

Whoa, I think I actually understand the reference in that Robert Pollard album title.

And Colossal Yes are still at it!

Looks like you scored big at the mini-fair...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm efd:

something to do with a beanstalk?
  11:14pm john:

You know, we've noticed with some distress that you're not getting the same joy out of saying Le Poisson Rouuuuuge that once you did.
  11:14pm SteveL:

Re. Flirts: Some one wanted to make those girls into stars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm G:

#SteveL: Ya think? :)
  11:17pm Danne D:

Baseball news.
Mike Morse traded to Seattle!
The A's get John Jaso from Seattle
Washington gets A.J. Cole from the A's
Washington also gets two players to be named later - it's unclear who from.
  11:17pm john:

Does that mean only The Fibb, Figg, Finn, and Firr are still available?
  11:17pm SteveL:

...or just make them. [cymbal crash]

Remember to tip.
  11:18pm john:

Danne, given that they seem to get the worst of every deal, even ones they're not actually involved in, I'd assume they'll get them from the Mets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm G:

@Steve: D'ya think *he* tipped?
  11:19pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Per wiki, Mr. O brought professional singers into the studio in place of the actusl Flirts because the Flirts were trained as "models". Ho ho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm efd:

john, I had not noticed I was slipping on "Le Poisson Rouge!" I will do my best to get back to my previous vim and vigor when mentioning that venue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm G:

So this is what CSNY were really going for!
  11:20pm john:

  11:21pm SteveL:

G: re. tipping. Not exactly.

Barkevious: Awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Red Fish:

Mercy buckets.
  11:22pm Barkevious Shabazz:

They do sound helpless.
  11:22pm *he*:

"I'm not worried. I'll teach 'em to sing by the time they get famous."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm G:

To review: The Flirts were the Milli Vanilli of the early 80s, but without the actual hit, and therefore without the actual bigtime scandal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm *he*:

and if the record flops, at least I got some nice coochie.
  11:25pm Droll:

  11:30pm Holly in NC:

I so enjoy this Ceramic Hello reissue, yay!
  11:31pm Holly in NC:

@InBrkly - You win comment of the night, Game over, guys!
  11:36pm BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

A couple of months back Rob Weisberg was doing a remote from Le Poisson Rouge. When Terre started Cherry Blossom Clinic some of the streams were streaming the open mic at LPR. We could hear a band warming up. A listener commented that he heard them say...I don't remember how he spelled it; I'll try to find it. I got a kick out of it though.
  11:37pm BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Here you go:

"Was that Rob Weisberg on the new "Remote Rehearsal Stream." Call him at the Pwasawn Roozh."
  11:39pm Mary Wing:

Damn skippy, bud! Live music at 1 am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm G:

  11:42pm Mike Napoli:

Yo La Tengo, yeah these guys rule.

@G: My head is filled with trivial moments like that from the comments board.

I remember reading that comment and thinking "what kind of cockamamie name is that for a place" then looked at Rob's text promoting the remote and realized I probably would have spelled it the same way.

yay boomgates :)

efd was on that board (I just went and looked) -- so i was tying his performance of "P.R." in for fun

Yeah, I remember that! There was a lot of consternation trying to get that other signal off the air.

Hey there Evan.... really enjoying the show tonight! nice finds at the record fair ~ hope to hear more in the future.

That was a very Keystone Cops moment...everyone trying to figure out how to fix it. Ken was asking everyone to call him immediately.

As all employees are well aware, a boss has to be good for *something* :-)

Dear listeners: The WFMU.org website is going to be taken down for some routine maintenance at midnight. Streams should be fine. Don't panic, stand up and stretch your legs for a bit. I'll be here, mostly in control. heh.

Thanks for a great show EFD :)
Take care everyone :)

Nope, no robots involved in this project. Humans battling software, whee!

Thanks very much for listening, requesting, and commenting everyone! See you next week for the special Wired Up! show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm G:

Modern life, in other words. I see!

A heads-up to those of you who expect to keep listening on into the night:

We're having to do some maintenance on the wfmu.org server, which will start just after midnight US/Eastern.

So... poor Mary W gets stuck with no live playlist for the beginning of the show. The streams and FM signal should keep going just as usual, and we hope to be back in 15 minutes or less (less if nothing goes badly haywire).

Oh, wait. Mary just said all this.

haywire. could be fun!
