Spiffing to taste some Gentle Giant at last, one of my most favourite vintage prog bands!
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, noble sire.
Avatar 1:51pm
northguineahills:

Ahh, the original Nirvana, who Dj Shadow sampled.
Avatar 1:53pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

In a glass house is my favourite GG album although many would argue that by that stage they were on their way down and had lost their heavy orchestral classical symphonic touch.
However the album is slick, tight and easier to listen to than say 3 friends or aquiring the taste!
Avatar 1:55pm
Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: It's amazing -- and sometimes a bit ridiculous -- how many bands have the same name. For example, there are several '80/'90s bands called The Mothers. Can't imagine what their excuse would be for their total lack of originality.

@ Sir Lancelot: That's my fave GG album as well -- even though I guess the band itself wasn't happy with the album.
Avatar 1:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi Kat! Finnish indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Rich in Washington:

And I guess there's the case of Jandek choosing that name after he got a cease and desist letter from a band called The Units. Not sure if it's the same Units that put out High Pressure Days.
Avatar 1:59pm

I recognized "syntimapaiva" or something spelled close to that. Hyva syntimapaiva approximates "happy birthday."
Avatar 🥁 2:00pm
BSI:

As much of a prog-nerd as I claim to be, I've only got the two G.Giant albums (acquiring the taste & octopus), dunno the material beyond that -- I feel as if I've failed all of you...

@Kat: yep, that's a BSI mugshot from about 1995 (when that kind of fractal rendering software was still novel, clearly). The hat looks like some kind of fedora, but it's a super-tall "cat in the hat" model, just cropped...
Avatar 🥁 2:06pm
BSI:

Avatar 2:09pm
Carmichael:

I love the Giant, yet only have the Glass House & Power and the Glory. I couldn't buy EVERY album back in the 70s, although I tried.
Avatar 2:11pm
Tony Coulter:

I consider myself a big prog head -- but don't really like a lot of the big names too much ... such as King Crimson, Yes, and ELP. I prefer a lot of the bands influenced by them to those bands themselves. I do like Gentle Giant and Gabriel-era Genesis, though.
Avatar 2:14pm
kat330:

And Carmichael, gotta hand it to your new avatar, too.
Avatar 🥁 2:16pm
BSI:

Likewise, Tony: I got introduced to that stuff at the Grobschnitt/Jane/Ange level of non-popularity, so I never really went back to dig the big boys.
Avatar 2:17pm
Tony Coulter:

I guess when it comes to famous prog bands, I only like the G groups. Or should I say the Gº groups....

G has been a great letter for me. Right there you get Gentle Giant, Guru Guru, Grobschnitt, Gila, Gong, ... uh.. .doing this from memory, I know there's more...
Avatar 2:23pm
Carmichael:

Yes, ELP and Asia are not prog bands by any stretch of the imagination, despite my friends saying how much they love "prog" and use those examples. Jeez, they've never even heard of Gentle Giant or Dixie Dregs. I need some new friends.

Geez, a quick survey of my LP collection (those not stored away) shows a real dearth of "G" artists. Between F and H I only have a Genesis, a Grieg and Guthrie.
Avatar 2:47pm

Kat, would that be Wendy Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie or daddy himself Woody?
Avatar 🥁 2:47pm

It's Woody. John Hammond follows him and Peter Frampton precedes Genesis. :)

kat330:

Tony, is this your tribute to your FMU timeslot competitor, Joe B ?
Avatar 2:51pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

One time, (probably due to a strain of insanity that runs through the family) I decided to collect as many Grateful Dead live recordings as possible.
I had all the Dick's Picks upto about nuimber 35 when I called it a day. This was due to the fact that they were about to release all of the Europe 72 recordings on 450 cds. Yes 450 cds! now how could I keep up with that!
Avatar 2:52pm

@ kat330: Nope, it's my tribute to coffee -- I have to get up early (Pacific time) to do this slot.
