greetings, tony, and happy tuesday, all!
Avatar 11:55am
tonyc:

Hullo dere, James! See you all in 5 minute minutes, everybody.
Avatar 12:02pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Salutations Tony,
I must confess at first gander I thought The Larry Mondello Band were a wedding and Bar Mitzvah celebration dance band!
They gave no hint (at least in name) that they had something of Throbbing Gristle about them.
No good to be too prejudicial. Must be sitting round the castle look at old armour suits!
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Sir L!
Avatar 12:08pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

WKCR? When were you DJ on that station and are there any playists and archives for that period?
Avatar 12:09pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

oh yes start with a bang!
Avatar 12:10pm
glenn:

t.g. as a wedding band? that'd be kinda great actually.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Sir LP: Was on KCR for years, from '84 or '85 up until around 2008. Meaning I was on both FMU and KCR at the same time for many years. Not a single KCR archive exists -- they didn't have any kind of archiving system.
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Glenn!
Avatar 12:11pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

the wedding guests would have to be really doped up on high grade peyote to dance to T.G.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
listener james from westwood:

that's what the cocktail hour is for!
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

No track titles on this Klang Association tape, by the way.
Avatar 12:14pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

T.G. did have an album called 20 Jazz funk greats though. Having never heard it I would doubt that it sounded anything like Herbie Hancock or Lonnie Listen Smith? But I could be wrong!
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

You're not wrong!
Avatar 🥁 12:15pm
Snortley:

Funny thing about the KCR show; I don't recall ever hearing your name mentioned there, though it was obviously you from the voice and music. Then there's that Mad Dog guy confusing things further...
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Snortley! I still get email for the Mad Dog -- even though he spells his name differently -- he spells his last name "Colter."
Avatar 12:18pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Snortley - could have sworn your profile picture just changed colour! Is it you or the high grade stuff I am using!
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

And my comments sign-on name just morphed from tonyc to Tony Coulter against my will. Oh well, I'll go with the flow.
Avatar 12:21pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

must be the klangers doing it!
Avatar 12:23pm
Carmichael:

Hey Tony. Half-dead from the flu, but otherwise listening. Wasn't Larry Mondello one of the Beav's friends?
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Carmichael! Feel better soon. Yep, Larry Mondello was the Beaver's pal -- the trouble-making one.
Avatar 12:29pm
glenn:

actually, i pretty much hate t.g. i just like the idea.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

If anyone's curious, the three rather sinister-looking cassettes I'm playing today are pictured here (with Mondello on the left): www.facebook.com...
  12:29pm
MrFab:

Howdy, y'all! Actually Sir Pratt, as I recall, the title track at least to "20 jazz Funk Greats" was indeed a somewhat funky jazzy synth/drum machine kinda thing.

"industrial noise"! There's an '80s term I hadn't heard in ages. Seems that "industrial" at some point came to mean dance music for goths and not this sort of lovely stuff.
Avatar 12:31pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, MrFab. Yeah, the term industrial has long since been hijacked -- but I'm sticking to my guns, Wax Trax be damned.
Avatar 🥁 12:32pm
BSI:

I am now THE LATE BSI.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Rest in Pieces, my friend.
Avatar 12:34pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Mr Fab - thought T.G. title was tongue in cheek.
I seem to remember their music being somewhere beyond industrial, Crass gone atmospheric noise!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
listener james from westwood:

even al jourgenson of ministry eventually found that term amusing. in an interview he said, "oh, yes, 'industrial.' 'hey, trent reznor, let's get together and do some spot-welding.'"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
listener james from westwood:

bsi has joined the choir invisible.
Avatar 🥁 12:35pm
BSI:

Agreed, and stay righteous (re: don't let the pouting disco kids scowling through their black bangs rob us of the "industrial" term...well, they have, but anyway...)
Avatar 🥁 12:37pm
BSI:

Rather like... many of us making bedroom psych & experimental tape sounds in the 80s called it "noise" as a term of endearment, more than a descriptive thing. Much of it wasn't "noise" in the genre sense, just self-indulgent good fun.
Avatar 12:37pm
Mary Wing:

I didn't know you were on KCR simultaneously, Tony. You double-dipper DJ, you! :-) How'd you pull that off?
Avatar 🥁 12:37pm
BSI:

This Klang is tops, btw
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Mary!! Believe it or not, I was on three stations for a couple of years: FMU. KCR, and NYC. The only explanation is that I am insane.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ BSI: Glad you like it. Recorded live in a Queens bar (or something).
Avatar 12:40pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Tony, was it the same show on both stations or did you prepare completely different shows.
If so pray tell us what were the differences in philosophy between the two shows.
Was there more freedom on KCR say, or did they demand you play some top 20 shit as well?
Avatar 🥁 12:42pm
BSI:

ah, now i need to dig out my Mondo Cane VHS and dust it off...
Avatar 12:43pm
Tony Coulter:

@ SIR LP: Completely different shows. The KCR one was all experimental modern classical stuff.
Avatar 12:44pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

is the station still going?
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, it is.
Avatar 12:48pm
Mary Wing:

Wow, that's dedication! And what did you play on WNYC?
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Sir LP: It's not a freeform station -- it's divided into "departments": jazz, new music, world music, etc.
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mary Wing: Just your standard classical stuff -- did it for the money, to be honest. Though it was fun to fill in for David Garland.
Avatar 🥁 12:51pm
BSI:

This is great stuff, vintage '87... I don't suppose you have any of the old New Carrollton cassettes in your vast archive? (mid-late 80s DC area collective) -- some of that stuff might be prime "tape hiss" material. They were prolific little buggers.
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mary Wing: I was only ever a fill-in at NYC, but was on quite a bit for a while there.
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

@ BSI: Never hoid of New Carrollton. Sorry!
  12:55pm
MrFab:

So Tony, did YOU ever make any music? Come on, cough it up!
Avatar 12:55pm
northguineahills:

I'm around here somewhere, let me look....
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

@ MrFab: Ages ago. That well is good and dry by now.
Avatar 12:56pm
Tony Coulter:

NGH! I think I see you coming 'round the corner....
Avatar 🥁 12:58pm
BSI:

a veritable cthulhu of wolf-noses...!
Avatar 12:58pm
Mary Wing:

I'm really liking this tape! I missed the beginning of the show, but did you say where you got/found this?
Avatar 🥁 12:59pm
BSI:

well, to put it in perspective, tony:
New Carrollton was to Psychodrama, what nitrogen is to duct tape.
...that sums it up nicely.
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mary Wing: The band sent it to me a million years ago, before I was on FMU (for me to play on KCR). I don't think it ever came out.
Avatar 1:02pm
Tony Coulter:

And I'm not sure, actually, if they ever released anything -- there's a recent-ish label called Klang Association, but I don't think they're connected.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, this side of the tape ends as abruptly as side A -- so don't worry that your computer is crashing.
Avatar 🥁 1:07pm
BSI:

digging it with gusto.
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, somebody should release this thing.
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

I may put a bit on my next marathon premium, which is going to be all unreleased stuff.

Has Larry driven everyone away?
Avatar 1:36pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

trust me to think all this time that Larry Mondello was something like Manhattan Transfer!
Well you can't tell anything by a name, more like the Butthole's Asylum Choir!
Avatar 🥁 1:37pm
BSI:

neh! That Grendel track was the bee's bloomers!
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Larry didn't mean to be naughty...
Avatar 🥁 1:38pm

...and I mean "bloomers" not in the biblical sense. Whatever the hell that would mean.

Hello drumheads.
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Uncle Michael!
Avatar 1:42pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

If there is such a thing as a 'noise scene' then you would have to say Nurse with Wound are the leading proponants. - Discuss!
Avatar 🥁 1:43pm
BSI:

a certain "walter westinghouse" vibe just there...
Avatar 1:44pm
Tony Coulter:

@ BSI: There's definitely some Residents influence on Larry!
  1:45pm
Eddie Haskell:

"Thanks Mr. Cleaver/Coulter for taking it easy on the Beaver."
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Sir LP: NWW are great for sure -- don't know if I'd say any band/person is the leading proponent. There are so many flavors of noise....
Avatar 🥁 1:46pm
BSI:

Sir LP: Dunno about "noise" as such: I'd call NWW more like a modern Dadaist thing; from the cut-ups (Sylvie & Babs album) to the more freaked-out lounge music appropriations (Bacteria Magnet) ... heck, they're all over the map. Some dynamite drone material as well... All great, naturally.
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

You're welcome, Eddie!!
Avatar 1:47pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

perhaps their list is even more famous than their music.
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

I wouldn't call NWW "noise" either, actually. Noise to me is stuff like Merzbow. I'm most drawn to NWW's collage/cut-up stuff.
Avatar 1:51pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

what one might call drill and bass music?
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Einsturzendedrillandbass?
Avatar 1:56pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

which was the band that use saw, drill and cut the stage up in their live performance?
was it Laidbach or Einzubeinubaten?
  1:59pm
MrFab:

Why is the notice that this show is now aring banished to the bottom of the FMU homepage?
Avatar 2:01pm
Tony Coulter:

Dunno -- think that might be a random event. It has happened before. Blame the computer gods, not any mere mortals.
Avatar 2:02pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Mr Fab - so those with serious dementia don't accidently start listening!
Avatar 2:03pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Sir LP: Einstürzende Neubauten have been known to be fond of a drill now and again....

Avatar 2:07pm
Tony Coulter:

The Beave would be proud.
Avatar 2:08pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

this is the sort of music to acompany aversion therapy or chemical castration! you know to take your mind off things for a while.
Avatar 2:09pm
Tony Coulter:

... but not wedding music, as you thought?
Avatar 2:11pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

not a traditional anyway!
may be to a Father Yod ceremony - marrying several girls at once and mating them publicly!
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Have to 'fess up: I've never seen "Leave It to Beaver."
Avatar 2:13pm
Tony Coulter:

For more than a minute or two, that is.
Avatar 2:15pm
Mary Wing:

I like this tape also, but I was hoping to hear more static, heh.
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

You're right, Mary! There's very little static cling.
  2:23pm
MrFab:

"Leave It to Beaver", "Brady Bunch," "Father knows Best," "8 is Enough" - yeah, never watched any of 'em. I was living in boring American suburbia, why watch it on TV? Esp. when I could be watching "Speed Racer" or "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" or sumthin!
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Same here: "Beaver Knows Best," "8 Is a Bunch" -- never watched any of them.
Avatar 2:31pm
Tony Coulter:

I did watch "Father Knows Beaver," though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm

You name it...I watched it. I'm not proud.
