True story, I once captured some Strawberry Zots in a Shining Net, then subjected them to Squirm Rhymes w/ Germ in a Mystery Tape Laboratory.

good morning tony, and congrats to the stream and the station for hitting their goals

Same damn thing happened to me (though w/o germ).

Hey James and Michael! Congratulations to all, yes! And, before I forget, BIG THANKS to three people who pledged to this show after the last show finished, and so didn't get thanked: Tara from Butler, NJ, John from Brooklyn, and Fredrik from Los Angeles. THANKS!!

Hey Lewis! Thanks a ton for everything!

Thought I'd give this show a listen. I'm listening to the replay of the Rangers/Carolina game at the same time. The grass is singing while the pucks are flying, very interesting juxtaposition.

Hey, Tower!

goodness, this is lovely.

Light in the leaves reminded me somewhat of Michael Brook. Not a sound alike, just an association.

It's still tied right now. If only they still broadcast Rangers games on WNBC I could listen live, even here in MD. Ah, the good old days. Now back to The Shining Net.

Doug Schulkind:

Wow, the singing on the previous Shining Net tracks sounded very Laura Veirs-ish to me. And that's a good thing.
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

I usually hate this kind of '90s breathy digital-synth sound, but somehow The Shining Net make it work for me.
  12:35pm
Tower:

I like the closer guitar work on Oak Leaf Memories and the rhythm on A Thousand Cranes better than the far back ethereal tracks, but it's all very good.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

"clementine" sounds like a fitting follow-up thus far.

Agreed. The tape will soon veer off in other directions, though!

Side B of this cassette, coming up later, is totally different from this side -- it's chock full of collage/cut-up madness.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm

Loren, you can configure many applications to open that, such as Winamp. If you don't have an app set up, you can try the flash player www.wfmu.org...

Germs have cut the lead to two!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm

If you don't have Winamp and download it and install it, it will likely automatically make itself the default program for that type of file/link.

My pleasure, Tony.
Avatar 1:53pm
Loren:

hey hey! thnak you Uncle Michael! Tony!

Last time I said "thank you, uncle Michael" was on my 13th birthday. He wasn't really my uncle, so I don't know why he was there. My parents just told me to say thank you and address him as uncle. I knew hs name was Michael, he once came to see me play baseball, and I really liked the video game he gave me, but I never saw Uncle Michael again after that day. He didn't have any cake. I thought I saw him tearing-up, but it was a blustery day. Maybe he was my father... I've only a gold watch with the intials MS... Schwartz? Shuemaker? Smith?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm
Uncle Michael:

It wasn't me. I swear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm

Headline of the day: "Bankruptcy judge OKs sale of Twinkies, Ding Dongs"

I guess sell-by dates are just guidelines and unenforceable.

Gotta gotta go work outside for a while. See some of you for Charlie's show, Busy Doing Nothing, on Thursday. Enjoyed the music.

Been here for a half hour, just realized that Tony is playing relatively recent recordings for this tape-hiss.
Avatar 2:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey NGH! 22 years ago is relatively recent?!? I will say, apropos of nothing, that '90s cassettes tend to sound a little better sound-quality-wise than ones from the '80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Uncle Michael:

XLII-*S*, babeeee!
Avatar 2:08pm
northguineahills:

Usually Tape Hiss focuses on the late 70s - early 80s (from my recollection.)
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Umm -- yes, I guess the '90s is relatively recent for "Tape Hiss"!
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Overall, the '80s were the "golden age" for cassette underground–type stuff, hence the show is weighted '80s, I guess.
Avatar 2:10pm
Loren:

I stumbled back in... is this Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra... sounds pretty cool.
Avatar 2:11pm
Loren:

Is it possible these recordings are from 1989, but not committed for release until 1991?
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Loren: That is possible! Whew....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Rich in Washington:

Seems like it was the early nineties when really good cassette technology was much more accessible.
I remember when a dual cassette deck was sort of an exotic, relatively unobtainable item.
Avatar 2:13pm
northguineahills:

Curious, I recognize a decent chunk of these samples.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Rich in Washington:

There's some African Funeral music in there that I recognize from a strange compilation I have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Doug Schulkind:

Did anyone ever buy into the whole "metal" thing with the higher-end cassettes? I was always happy enough with the chrome.
Avatar 2:17pm
Tony Coulter:

I did buy metal cassettes for a while there for really important stuff, but never noted a dramatic difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't think tape culture even starts to end till CD burners in home computers became standard equipment.

@Doug, I tried 'em. I pretty much stuck to Maxell XLII-S and TDK SA toward the end...or whatever they were continually re-branded to be called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Rich in Washington:

It seemed to me that I had bad luck with metal cassettes. It seemed like they didn't last long, started having problems in terms of shelf life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Rich in Washington:

I have many, many TDK SAs that have been stored in less-than-ideal ways and they still sound pretty good.
Avatar 2:20pm
Ike:

Doug, I could never discern a quality difference between type IV ("metal") and type II blank cassettes. IIRC, Consumer Reports said the same.
Avatar 2:20pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Micheal: Agreed that tape culture continued well into the '90s and even beyond, and of course has a second life these days. Just meant that the '80s was the really groundbreaking era, and that a lot of people switched from cassette to vinyl or CD by the late '80s.
Avatar 2:21pm
northguineahills:

When I was in high school. I'd sometimes nick my father's metal cassettes (he used for work), but normally, whatever was available at Turtles worked for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember there was this no-name brand of cassettes that my brother and I would tape stuff on (we taped a lot of stuff off of the radio) and they sounded really good for the price and lasted a long time. We would buy up every one we'd see in stores.
We called 'em 'rainbow tapes', because they had a rainbow on the label. The only thing they said on them was 'Low Noise'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
Uncle Michael:

@Tony, I was speaking from the home-recordist, mix-tape, tape-trading perspective.
Avatar 2:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Ah, I gets you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Uncle Michael:

I went from Cassette to DAT to CD-R and was a pretty early CD-R adopter, wrestling with SCSI controllers. Ugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
Doug Schulkind:

I was always a TDK-SA guy. Don't know why. I have hundreds of them stashed in the closet, but nothing to play them with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Rich in Washington:

We had a lot of Sony UCXs for some reason. It seems like they had dropout problems, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Uncle Michael:

When I first encountered cassette shells held together by screws I was so delighted. It's like someone knew I'd been repairing "eaten" tapes with scotch tape since 1972 and was finally taking pity on me.
Avatar 2:34pm
fleep:

I still have a Denon DRM-550 cassette deck, my reissued Impulse jazz collection is on tape. And ditto on the metal, it never made much difference.,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Uncle Michael:

I love the kung fu rhythm track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm
Rich in Washington:

You could also make tape loops out of tapes that you could take apart.
  2:37pm
Vartkes B.:

Regarding the metal tape issue: I never noticed a difference either. I'm guessing if you had high-end equipment it might have mattered. Those TDK SAs bring back memories of heading to Uncle Steve's on Canal St to get a bunch for the (at the time) bargain price of $3.99 each!
PS- did anybody use the "Dolby" setting?
Avatar 2:38pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

TDK-SA was great, until I moved to the metal ones. Dolby C, Dolby S...
