Avatar 12:03pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Why hello there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Caryn:

Hi Duane and Duaniacs! Happy May Day!
Avatar 12:04pm Cecile:

I love Ulrich Schnauss.
Hola Duane! All!

you got some 10cc deep cuts on ya?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm DCE:

very cool, very cool...good day to you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm mise en place:

I'll take some 10cc deep cuts, too. Or whatever else you have. I'm easy.
Avatar 12:05pm Duane:

Happy May Day everyone..10CC sounds good Cecile..hmmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm robyn:

hello everyone...important life note...I SAW PATTI SMITH LAST NIGHT AND IT WAS AWESOME
Avatar 12:06pm Cecile:

robyn, her shows are always incredible.
Avatar 12:07pm Cecile:

I have been on a jag. Finally got the 1st 2 10cc albums on CD, and the Hotlegs comp, I didn't even know they put out a full-length.
Stop me before I buy the Neil Sedaka albums they played backup on.
Avatar 12:08pm Cecile:

I have been a fan of them since '76...
Avatar 12:09pm Jennique:

Fellow Duaniac checkin' in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm robyn:

@cecile consider also that i expected a book reading, i was blown away. almost all the classic stuff you could ask for plus my favorites from her new album. and, she's funny. great time.
Avatar 12:11pm Cecile:

yeah, I saw her at a book reading and she ended up doing 5 songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm robyn:

@cecile she's the coolest.
Avatar 12:15pm Cecile:

this is great, but I'm talking original lineup...
with Creme and Godley still in the fold.
Avatar 12:15pm Droll:

. o O ( Uh oh -- it's been J Dillized! )
Avatar 12:17pm Cecile:

Eric Stewart is a ridiculously good guitarist, though.
Avatar 12:17pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Quibble, quibble... ;)
Avatar 12:19pm Cecile:

I need that Creme/Godley insanity in there. I decided yesterday that Kevin Godley is now my new spirit animal.
Avatar 12:20pm Cecile:

YES. Awesome.
Avatar 12:20pm Cecile:

and of course you have an original, you crate-digger.
Avatar 12:21pm Cheri Pi:

Man, every little thin is right w/ the world!!!
Avatar 12:22pm Cecile:

I listened to How Dare you on YouTube yesterday in bits. I used to have that 8 track - never replaced it with anything.
Avatar 12:23pm Cecile:

I'm Mandy, Fly Me is the one of the most deranged singles ever, and it was a UK hit!
Avatar 12:25pm Droll:

Cecile, I never got a CD to replace my LP of that album because I fetishize that album cover. CD won't do. Is there even a decent remaster?
Avatar 12:26pm Cecile:

Yes. Buy the UK version. It was also remasted for the VERY expensive UK box Tenology. It has Original Soundtrack, How Dare You, Deceptive Bends and Bloody Tourists.
Avatar 12:27pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Now some Todd Rundgren
  12:27pm common:

Avatar 12:27pm Cecile:

Gouldman is a great songwriter, but his mindmeld with Andrew Gold was dreadful because it doubled the sappy factor.
Avatar 12:27pm Jennique:

It's hard to hear this song and not think of We Are the Champions by Queen. Gotta go with Queen for stadium anthems.
Avatar 12:29pm Cecile:

come on, some Godley/Creme. Or at least Richie Havens doing I'm Not In Love.
Avatar 12:29pm Jshatan:

Happy Weds. all.
Avatar 12:30pm Sem Chumbo:

I hear "Wichita Lineman" in this.
  12:31pm common:

@Sem: Just what I was thinkin!
Avatar 12:32pm Cheri Pi:

C-that's da money shot right there.
Avatar 12:32pm Droll:

Godley & Creme Snack Attack!
Avatar 12:33pm Duane:

Hey Jeremy!!!
Avatar 12:33pm Cheri Pi:

  12:34pm common:

Avatar 12:34pm Cecile:

hahah, nice.
If you just happen to have "worst band in the world", "Mandy" or "I want to rule the world" that would be awesome.
Avatar 12:34pm Cecile:

but this also satisfies my 10cc greed.
Avatar 12:35pm Jennique:

Oh wow, I've not heard this version of I'm Not in Love. Nice! Gonna favorite it.
Avatar 12:35pm kata:

morning Duane and all ~

got your premium in the mail this week Duane -- it is fantastic ! thank you thank you thank you ! Love all the hand-clappy Price stuff ~
Avatar 12:35pm Cecile:

Great article on the making of I'm Not In Love:

Avatar 12:36pm Cheri Pi:

Lest we forget Brannon crooning out such hallowed words :www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm robyn:

yes, i like this a lot
Avatar 12:38pm Cecile:

Basically, 10cc were an example of "what would happen if you had 4 INTJs in a band?"
Avatar 12:38pm Cheri Pi:

om mah god, I'm listening to 4 versions of this song at once!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar 12:39pm Cheri Pi:

YEs!! Exxxactly. 10CCp
Avatar 12:39pm Cecile:

cheri, you need to resend the flaming cherry turnover to Ken.
Avatar 12:39pm Cheri Pi:

OK-will do.
Avatar 12:40pm Jennique:

Gotta go grab some chow and stroll outside. Laters.
  12:44pm amy:

The video available in YouTube calls them alucidnation. Awesome cover!!
  12:47pm Britt:

I also just got your amazing premium. It is on permanent rotation at my place! Thanks for the great tunes every Wed.!
Avatar 12:50pm Duane:

Britt, Kata: Thanx SO much for enjoying the premium and supporting the station. I had a blast putting it together. It was my pleasure
Avatar 12:52pm Jshatan:

This is pure sunshine funk. Wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm mise en place:

oh damn, can't wait to get my hands and ears on that premium
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Patti Smith - awesome...yeah, that'd be my *1st* guess
...I'm just deeply jealous...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm robyn:

@revrabbitnov63 well she was scheduled to play with her full band so it was more my own lack of attentiveness that made the set that much sweeter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I'm jusy honored to be in the same World as Patti Smith! Yeesh. The 'Dream of Life' documentary is Kewl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm braveness23:

B23 here. Could you hold it down over there? I've got work to do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Patti's book 'Just Kids' about early years w/ Mapplethorpe (a fellow Scorpio - & how...) is great.
Avatar 1:18pm Jshatan:

What is up with the Patti Smith troll?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Caryn:

Btw, it was nice to finally hear the original version of "Into Your Arms". Also, can't wait for the premium! It should probably be here in 3-4 months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm robyn:

patti smith troll? was talking about the concert i attended yesterday. @revrabbit i do want to pick up that book.
Avatar 1:25pm Alex:

This song is actually from the album "I am a model" (not robot) - I think I got it as Marathon swag from WFMU back in '81 or something
Avatar 1:26pm Jshatan:

The reverence was scaring me.
Avatar 1:27pm Cecile:

You kind of get that way after a Patti show.
Avatar 1:27pm Duane:

Thanx Alex..the autocorrect snagged me again
Avatar 1:29pm Alex:

no problem - thanks for playing it; it's always a treat to hear something on WFMU that is so obscure and yet (as a longtime listener) so familar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm robyn:

this board is all about reverence. patti smith is persona non grata?
Avatar 1:36pm Cecile:

WOW. That's a show I can miss.
We host the stuff every Thursday.
I watch re-runs of Scorned: Love Kills and hub and friends play D&D downstairs.
  1:37pm don:

i have that Emotions LP in the basement and i never even knew how good that song is.
  1:43pm Rick from SC:

just joined the comments. Now, I must buy the Hotlegs comp.
Avatar 1:44pm doca:

hello duane and listeners! glad to see the party's on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm mise en place:

I bet I can do the boogaloo like he do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm robyn:

oh i love this song. NO NO NO NO NO NO
Avatar 1:50pm Droll:

robyn, I feel your pain. If someone must remix, they should at least use stems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm robyn:

@droll i was just singing along ;)
Avatar 1:53pm Droll:

. o O ( Sigh... I suffer alone... )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm robyn:

you can't be suffering too much...walter gibbons is on... :)
Avatar 1:56pm Jennique:

Back from lunch in Central Park. Looks like I missed some goodies, especially early live Depeche Mode and Prince! (Can't wait for your premium.)
Avatar 1:56pm Droll:

I'm baffled by most remixes, it's like taking credit for someone else's song. If a great song gets better when you remix it, does the remix get better when you remix that?
Avatar 1:58pm Cecile:

Rick, most of Hotlegs is great, and it's never for a moment not interesting. And they can SANG.
Avatar 1:58pm Duane:

Well the Ron Hardy edits are signinficant because those were pretty much the foundation of House music
Avatar 1:59pm Eli:

Morning all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm mise en place:

@Jennique - I am jealous of your ability to go outside for lunch. I am tethered to the phones here except on very rare occasions. Back when I worked in shipping/receiving, I ate my lunch in the park every nice day...took my shoes off and napped on a rock.
Avatar 2:00pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Ron Hardy!
Avatar 2:00pm Cecile:

I can think of a bunch of songs that were better as remixes. Queen Latifah's Ladies First, the first Monie Love single, Madonna's Deeper and Deeper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm tim from champaign:

Thanks for playing Ron Hardy, Duane. I've only read about him up to this point. It's great to hear.
Avatar 2:02pm Jennique:

@mise en place: today is one of the few perfect days to be in Central Park. You'd be the most blissed out lizard on a hot rock today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm mise en place:

Avatar 2:04pm Jennique:

I know Damon Albarn did remixes of his own Gorillaz songs, which I though were better. Does it count if it's remixed by the same person who did the original?
Avatar 2:04pm Cecile:

It's 40 and raining here. UGH.
Avatar 2:05pm Cecile:

Sure it does, Jennique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm tim from champaign:

It's the opposite here, Cecile. 80 and sunny. Very pleasant.
Avatar 2:06pm Jennique:

If it makes you feel any better, I am beginning to get allergies and my head was thumping outside. Now it's thumping to Duane's beats.
Avatar 2:08pm Droll:

I repeat _most_, not all, remixes baffle me. Once upon a time there was a creative and exploratory process associated with remixing that involved manual editing or beat juggling skills that required practice. Downloading a song onto your laptop then looping it and applying filter sweep is frankly pretty weak when compared to the great song being used.

Sunny in Seattle, supposed to hit 65F today! A scorcher!
Avatar 2:12pm Cecile:

From my clumsy corn-weenie remix experience, I can attest it is really hard to do a great remix - even on a computer.

That is an art I have yet to master.
Avatar 2:12pm Cecile:

Uncle Derrick?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm SeanG:

let's whip it baby!
Avatar 2:14pm Duane:

Avatar 2:14pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

When is this one from Duane?
Avatar 2:15pm Duane:

  2:15pm common:

this is great!
Avatar 2:15pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Never heard this one, very cool
Avatar 2:15pm Jshatan:

Avatar 2:16pm northguineahills:

ditto to the above comments.
Avatar 2:16pm Droll:

Cecile, If you think a remix on a laptop is hard, try being Prince and playing all the instruments on your songs. Prince earned adoration and respect I can never give to his remixers.
Avatar 2:17pm Jennique:

My pet peeve about bad remixes is when they become more popular than the original and most young people don't know the original or care.
Avatar 2:18pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I am just mad that things progressed beyond hitting rocks with sticks...
Avatar 2:19pm Cecile:

I admire them for being collagists. It's not the same thing as being the original artist, but there is real skill and often genius there. It's just different and not entirely equal, which I'm sure the remixers would tell you themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Caryn:

I'm just mad I missed the Dutch handover ceremony yesterday.
Avatar 2:21pm Eli:

Great tunes this AM. Needed this.
Avatar 2:22pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I guess that was pass the Dutchy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Caryn:

@Jan: heh. Knowing the Dutch, a few of them probably celebrated by doing just that.
Avatar 2:24pm Jshatan:

Going deep, people - keep it up!
Avatar 2:26pm Cheri Pi:

ken freedman you should have mail
  2:26pm blake:

ooh this is $$$
Avatar 2:27pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 2:29pm Cecile:

wow, this is early War.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm tim from champaign:

I get the feeling Cecile and CP are up to something.
Avatar 2:31pm Cecile:

what can you say about a sensibility that was formed by both 10cc and War records?
Avatar 2:31pm Cecile:

my head sometimes wants to explode from all the internal contradictions.

What? Us? Tim? ;)
Avatar 2:33pm Cecile:

War needs an Unsung NOW.
  2:33pm common:

i agree, Duane. So good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Parq:

Duane, can you post the date of your "Wreck a Nice Beach" show, so I can find the archive? I never did get around to listening to it, and I really would like to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm efd:

@Parq, it was Jan 12 2012: wfmu.org...
Avatar 2:39pm Duane:

thanks efd: Dave Tompkins is in the Everglades right now doing research for his new book on Miami Bass..can't WAIT for that one!
Avatar 2:41pm Cecile:

efd: while I have you on the line - have you ever explored a category of what I call "accidental songs"? Like Cheap Trick writing "Hello There" to test the crappy sound systems they had to play with in the early days. Or Hotlegs recording Neanderthal Man just to see how many drum tracks they could put on tape before their equipent overloaded. There have to be more out there.
Avatar 2:41pm Cecile:

ooooh, Duane. Alert Billy Jam!
Avatar 2:43pm Cheri Pi:

Tim, just call us 10CCCp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm efd:

@Cecile, that's an interesting category! Didn't realize the stories behind those songs... could make for a cool marathon premium if there are enough of them out there.
Avatar 2:44pm Duane:

Cecile: I think the most famous "Junk jam" that became a hit was Steam's _"Kiss him goodbye"..they did that in 1 night I think..the drum track was from another session..(that's why the drum rolls are off)
  2:45pm Listening Out There:

not enough Michel Petrucciani heard these days. Big heart in a small person!
Avatar 2:46pm Duane:

LOT: Agreed..RIP Petrucciani
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Parq:

Thanks, efd.
  2:48pm Listening Out There:

For listeners who might not know Petrucciani: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Petrucciani
Avatar 2:49pm Cecile:

Duane, that's cool. I know that Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" began as him being drunk and singing over a vamp.

I love Michel Petriccuani. I reviewed his first album for my college radio station.
Avatar 2:50pm PKNY:

Woah, this version of "Ode to Billie Joe" is straight fire!
  2:50pm ?:

oh man, just learning about Petricciani . . .

In a more positive comment, I first heard Karin Korg on Duane's show; I dug then and I dig now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Parq:

This Dex solo stopped me in my tracks.
Avatar 2:53pm Cecile:

efd, let's get our thinking caps on. That would make a great marathon premium! "Junk Jams and Throwaways..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm robyn:

*krog :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Parq:

Damn. Wikipedia should just delete its entire entry for "tenor sax" and link to that solo.
  2:55pm ?:

"Krog" indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm robyn:

thanks for a lovely three hours duane. great way to pass a wednesday
