Yep. I bought it from an import bin in '76, and hoarded it through all the Winkies-less digital years.

I noticed they've stopped making computers with CD/DVD drives in them. I wonder how much longer before the typical home has no CD/DVD player at all. I can't imagine people having nostalgia for CD and supporting the format for another decade.

Avatar 11:13pm
Droll:

PSS, No tablet or phone has one, and very few laptops do. The trend is very clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
pacific standard simon:

The Winkies definitely had a gay-ish slant to them ("Twilight Masquerade"); the cover may have been the designer's interpretation of that. I think it sabotaged the record. Also don't think the band "members" posed for it.
Avatar 11:15pm
Droll:

G, When CD goes obsolete, the only record stores left will just sell records. How poetic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I've heard about what Droll's talking about...
- Saw the Charlie Haden Quartet give a free show - & he recalled how in the OrnetteColeman days they put 'Free Jazz' on the marquee - & people lined up expecting not to have to pay...
- Compare that cover to 'Sticky Fingers' by Warhol...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
G:

an older relative got a virus and asked me for help. she said no CDs in stores said you could load from the CD -- you needed net access. but the virus was preventing net access, so i had to download antivirus to another comp, and get it on the infected comp with a flash drive. what good did her CD drive do her? none.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
pacific standard simon:

But that cover was conservative compared to its contemporary, Roxy Music's Country Life, which was covered up, but sold anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
pacific standard simon:

Tablets and phones don't have room for a CD drive and have never had them. I haven't seen a laptop that didn't have a CD drive -- my Acer certainly has one.
Avatar 11:21pm
Droll:

Software is moving towards the subscription model, which makes users totally dependent on vendors. As you note, you already need a working computer to fix a computer now... The software treadmill and defective bloatware have been around for about a decade... It's all too depressing to even consider.
Avatar 11:23pm

PSS, Apple stopped putting DVD drives on Macs laptops over a year ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- reminds me of discussing new Liberace flick on latest Irwin's comments: Irwin thot it well done but a Gay OD (my words) for a hetero - I commented that I felt (a little) the same about 'Velvet Goldmine' about 70's GlitterRock by Todd Haynes. My hangup - thot it (VG) really good anyhow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
pacific standard simon:

Well, there you go... right into the Mac Vs. the rest of the world war.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- &/or Mac leading (by force?)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- digital-optical is perhaps not ideal for mechanical reasons (skipping CDs anyone?)...They want us on their Cloud though, yeah...
Avatar 11:31pm
Droll:

Apple is a Red Herring. CD/DVD, and physical media in general, is rapidly losing ground to streaming and download. It's more convenient for consumers and easier for IP owners to control. Modern computer form factors don't even have peripherals for physical media. CD/DVD is not coming back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
pacific standard simon:

I don't doubt that CDs/DVDs will eventually be displaced by another recording medium (solid state, probably); I was objecting to this premature statement by Droll:

"I noticed they've stopped making computers with CD/DVD drives in them."
Avatar 11:34pm
YETI BOB:

Droll: All currently made computers have USB ports & USB peripherals are readily available and cheap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- when Music 1st went Digital - it was my 1st thot that why not have a big library somewhere & just go 'pay per view' (listen)? It's the obvious thing to do.
- Yeah - there are USB ports to plug a CD drive into - but I heard it too that computers - *some* computers - Macs I do believe - were already being made w/out drives built-in standard.
Avatar 11:36pm
Droll:

I agree "Stopped" was too strong, however tablets are used as computers and are replacing the "traditional" computer market, and none of those devices have CD/DVD built-in. Yes, there will be peripherals for a long time, but as far as building it in as standard equipment, that's not on the roadmap.
  Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
12539:

I say, Put the "Big Library" in Jersey City, NJ, and make the 'pay per listen' a voluntary donation. I think it might work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

12539: FMU now *does* take up the better part of my listening time!
- W/ staggering accessibility
- Listening Time becomes what it's All About.
- & what I really hope is that it swings over to Sound Quality as a priority: The 20th Century was about bigger & bigger sound - than Digital hit, & it got more & more Compressed - exactly the Opposite thing! - to make small files & go over the Net. So as storage & bandwidth get 'easier' - I hope we go from MP3ish to MP4ish (CD quality), or even better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
pacific standard simon:

Could be, 12539... could be...

I'll say this, though: There's no way I would have gotten sucked into the WFMU vortex as deeply as I have if I hadn't been able to burn shows onto CDs and play them at work on a MP3-enabled CD boombox.
Avatar 11:48pm
YETI BOB:
