About to put my set of 1966 Ludwig pearl drums, Zildian cymbals(ride, crash, sizzle, high-hat) and Gretsch accessories (mostly) into storage. Just no room for them, NYC being known for tight spaces.
Avatar 9:35pm
Dave Mandl:

Sounds like a beautiful kit. What color?
Avatar 9:37pm
Droll:

Type "Elektrik Karousel" into Google, Google responds "Did you mean: electric carousel"

deanland, Good news, there's enough room here in Seattle for just such a kit!
Avatar 9:38pm

How embarrassing for Google.

Avatar 10:06pm
deanland:

The kit is gray pearl. it is total vintage of the era. It traveled well, from NY where I grew up to college in the Midwest, then to the south where I worked, up to Massachusetts (more work) then back to NY where it was with me in the burbs for a long time. One fellow at a gig saw it and told me he drooled over seeing a drummer with (get this!) "Ringo's drum set!"
Avatar 10:08pm
Dave Mandl:

Yup, not surprising.
Avatar 10:08pm
Droll:

HA! Do you also throw towels over them so they go thud-thud-thud?
Avatar 10:10pm
Dave Mandl:

Do you smoke a cigarette while you're playing?
Avatar 10:14pm
deanland:

@Droll: We did put a blanket in the bass drum for a little while until I got a new pedal. The old, original pedal (Ludwig) had poor action and needed to be thumped like mad, making it louder than intended -- for quite some time I tried retuning the drum -- then Roy Blumenfeld, drummer for the Blues Project, told me to try another pedal. Wow, was he ever correct. That was when I began slowly changing over slowly to all Gretsch accessories.

@Dave: back in the early 70's maybe, but not for the 35+ years since I quit!!!!
Avatar 10:14pm
Droll:

I love the version of this on Double Live Gonzo!
  Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

Cat Scratch Fever! This should fall under the 2% Rock and roll, but somehow...
Avatar 10:17pm
Dave Mandl:

This is the Ted Nugent no one really knows.
Avatar 10:17pm
deanland:

I think maybe it is Ned Tugent.
Avatar 10:21pm
Dave Mandl:

@deanland: Good for you (quitting smoking). But I have to admit there's something cool about him smoking while he's playing in Hard Day's Night.
Avatar 10:24pm
Droll:

Funny, because Brian Epstein urged them to quit smoking and drinking onstage when they were in Germany. They couldn't escape the "naughty" image.
Avatar 10:26pm
Droll:

I love the head flopping back and forth Ringo look, but Paul is still my favorite Beatles drummer.

Peter ivers tune ruined me

this is great thank you
Avatar 10:30pm
deanland:

According to a Beatles book I read, on a number of the cuts on some early Beatles albums, George Martin called in a drummer, sort of the Hal Blaine of London, to cover the drum track. Ringo, it seemed. learned on the job, and was somewhat tutored by George Martin. Probably more in style than in chops.
Avatar 10:32pm
Dave Mandl:

@deanland: Hmmm, well there are a lot of legends about Ringo, but I believe there was only track that they used a session guy on. Love Me Do.
Avatar 10:33pm
Dave Mandl:

Actually, a version of the song that was never released.
Avatar 10:39pm
Dave Mandl:

True story: Bernard Purdie claims he played drums on many Beatle records, but Ringo got credit. Completely crazy.
Avatar 10:44pm
deanland:

Good to know re Love Me Do. I heard that the Purdie stories were false. There's a fellow named Scott Freiman who does lectures deconstructing the Beatles. He's an expert on these things, and gets his hands on all sorts of demos and outtakes and does INCREDIBLE lectures on the Beatles. www.beatleslectures.com
Avatar 10:45pm
ottovonbqe:

Then there's the people who believe Paul McCartney is alive - they're the craziest.
Avatar 10:45pm
deanland:

+1 @ottovonbqe!
Avatar 10:46pm
Droll:

Why would Purdie need to exaggerate his career? And to claim credit on such mediocre playing!
Avatar 10:47pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Good question. Also, come on, what's better-documented than the Beatles' recording sessions? I think someone would have seen Purdie if he'd really been there.
Avatar 10:48pm
Dave Mandl:

@ottovonbqe: I think the jury's still out on that.
Avatar 10:49pm
dk:

i've heard some guy named "richard starkey" also played on a bunch of beatles records, but i'm not buying it for a second. lots of crazy conspiracy theories around that band, i tell you.
Avatar 10:54pm
deanland:

Rumor has it that Richard Starkey married a descendant of Johannes Sebastian Bach.
Avatar 10:55pm
Droll:

dk, There's also some crackpot, Pete Best, always saying "Me too!" I'm sticking with the Walrus as best Beatles drummer.
Avatar 11:01pm
Dave Mandl:

@deanland: True She restored hotness to the Bach family.
Avatar 11:04pm
deanland:

This Ayler piece sounds like it bore a lot of influence on Chris MacGregor's Brotherhood of Breath (which can only be heard, it seems, on WFMU).
Avatar 11:05pm
deanland:

Well, Dave, JS and CPO Bach really wore out the women in their lives!
Avatar 11:06pm
dk:

welp, this ayler box set just went straight onto the lust-object list.
  11:06pm
mark Flynn:

These guys do get Ornette, and to be honest, they get his mindset without being extremely obtuse. I appreciate Ornette for what he brought to the table, but his recordings are documents that would be revaluations live but most are difficult to absorb on vinyl.
