Tony Coulter:

This week's "Tape Hiss" features over an hour of newly rediscovered 1977 recordings from the George-Edwards Group, plus rarities from Mother Mallard and Gene Lubin.

Uncle Michael:

Were they in with the cosmic airbrushed t-shirts and the Puma Clydes?
Avatar 🥁 12:00pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Make it so.

Tony C, how the heck are ya?
Avatar 12:01pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey all -- nice to see you here!

Kay:

Was this last week's show brought to us now free of technical difficulties?
Avatar 12:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, what was intended to be last week's show, yes. Hi, Kay!

Hey, Tony! How's tricks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Rich in Washington:

I will be listening loudly in the room but only sporadically be near a keyboard.

got in just in time for the triple greetings! good tuesday, all, and happy to hear ya, tony!

Heya, Rich & Listener James!

DCE:

new to me, but this is very interesting reading:
mothermallard.com...
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

By the by, Mother Mallard is also known as Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. They turned into a sort of systems music/minimalist ensemble.
Avatar 12:13pm
Kay:

Oh good, because I was really impressed by the sneak peek of the artist the week before on your "regular" show.
Avatar 12:14pm
Carmichael:

Hi Tony, have never heard of this duo. Found out Edward Balian is a professor at CSU San Marcos. Raymond George has a website, but its in Japanese.
Avatar 12:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Carmichael! George-Edwards have two archival albums on Drag City.
Avatar 12:15pm
Carmichael:

George-Edwards Group, I mean. I inferred from your list that they wer first up.
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Nope -- they're the "headliner," so they're last. But I knew what you meant....
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

They're the headliners 'cause the stuff I'll be playing is unreleased, and in fact just recently (re)discovered.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

But Mother Mallard and Gene Lubin are headliners too -- on my show, anyhow.
Avatar 12:23pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, all I have of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. is "Like a Duck to Water".
Avatar 12:23pm
northguineahills:

Found it a record store in FL in the mid 90s, had no idea who they were, just liked the instrumentation listed, and bought w/o listening to it, and was rewarded.
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola. NGH! If you've got "Like a Duck" you'll back me up that this early stuff is quite different.
Avatar 12:26pm
northguineahills:

Yep, Like a Duck is in a Terry Riley vein.
Avatar 12:27pm
Carmichael:

This is timely for me, after just having seen the Moog documentary a few days ago.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

From what I remember, Mother Mallard was using the moog even before it was commercially available. They worked directly with Robert M.
Avatar 12:31pm
Carmichael:

Yes, they have an informative website. Was just reading David Borden's article about being the Chief Idiot for Moog, testing the gear before it went public.
  12:34pm
MrFab:

Hi dere, everybodys. This song: Beefheart goes techno-pop!
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Fab!
  12:36pm
MrFab:

I also only know Borden/Mallard from his '70s stuff so this is quite a revelation. I thought that Gershon Kinglsey's First Moog Quartet was the first moog band - this muddies the historical waters a bit.

unjustly overlooked, this combo was. glad to hear 'em!
Avatar 12:43pm
Tony Coulter:

For some reason, this CD was barely ever available -- maybe just sold at concerts or through their "fan club"/Web site.
Avatar 12:45pm

i want to be a chief idiot.

cue bad jokes in 5.... 4.... 3... 1 off blast!

hope the codg gets resids on that one. old-style paper shirt collars are expensive.
Avatar 1:06pm

and have you looked at the cost of spats lately?
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

I wish more rock bands used the marimba.
  1:18pm
MrFab:

I'd start a band with a marimba. Any marimba-ists in LA?
Avatar 1:29pm

Ok, ducking out for lunch. Superb zounds, Tony!
Avatar 1:29pm

none that will admit it, anyway.

Tony Coulter:

As just mentioned, I found these Malachi tracks on youtube. They were put up by the band and are, as far as I know, unreleased otherwise. Same story with the Rastus.
Avatar 2:41pm
glenn:

they remind me of mandy moore in saved.
Avatar 2:48pm
Tony Coulter:

I feel like I'm breaking some kind of law by playing vinyl on a "Tape Hiss" show -- but, well, this Apothecary track is from an LP. What can I say: I'm a rebel.
Avatar 2:49pm
Tony Coulter:

As mentioned, I'm off next week. Thom Jones -- aka DDJJJ66 -- will be filling in. Be sure to show him a good time.
