I actually listened to all 162 games of my team the Oakland A's from my home in Chevy Chase MD this year - a ton more than I listened to WFMU which is saying a lot. I spent my Ponderosa Stomp watching the Oakland/Tigers series behind the mixing board and had the best Stomp ever. Since the A's lost it in a heart wrenching Game 4 in Detroit - knowing they would fold in the 5th elimination game back in Oakland the following Friday night after I cam back from NOLA - at that point my Baseball season was OVER. Haven't watched any of the ALCS and certainly am bored by the "Yawn" yet another big $$$$$ Moneyball of yet another boring Rosox/Cards series.
  11:48am
Mr.Elliot:

Baseball is as cool any rock n roll show you can go to - has very little to do with sports tp me - it is culture like Jazz/Rock a billy - especially when you love the small market under dogs and they are performing...

Exactly, Mr. E. I love watching games at the ball park, but get bored stiff watching it on TV. Of course, being a Yanks fan, I don't know from rooting for the underdog, but even so, I have no real interest in going to that overhyped Advertising Delivery machine that's called the new Yankee Stadium. At least they didn't name it after a corporate sponsor. Of course, you're point here would be that "Yankees®" *is* a corporate sponsor, and I wouldn't really argue with that.

Michael Shelley:

I used to go to 10 games a year - but after the strike I just stopped. Now I find watching the last innings of important games exciting.
  11:59am
Mr.Elliot:

Grew up in NYC and went to great games at the old Yankee Stadium mid 60's-early 70's (joe Pep!) as a little kid - really caught heart for the game at the Giants old Candlestick games in the late 70's and then when I moved to Oakland in 1990 my heart was lost forever for the A's - my kids and I went to 20+ games/year from 1998-2010 when we moved to DC. Now becoming a bit of an Orioles fan - the fanbase is really important to me - love the Birds fans in Baltimore - Nats fans are a bunch a spoiled preppy kids and congressional staff - worth the 40 minute shlep up to Camden Yards.
  12:00pm
drewo:

Michael's still hitting 'em out of the park!
  12:03pm
Mr.Elliot:

Michael - Understand the bit about the strike but the early 2000's A's and Moneyball won my heart back - think Rex would concur - watched the movie again the other night and blubbered again at watching the re-enactment of Hatteburgs solo HR to win the 20th straight game - wife and I were at that game after getting back from a trip to italy just the night before. Baseball history is not always played out under the bright lights of the World Series - sometimes it is just another Tuesday night at the ball park between two small market teams playing for it all.
  12:04pm
Mr.Elliot:

Apropos my conversation with Mr. E, above, major-label concerts have joined Yankee Stadium games on my list of things I'm over with. The shows, like the stadium, are corporate advertising delivery machines based loosely on the venues we fondly remember. Phooey.

Michael, in the book Phil always seemed to have a personality disorder, or disconnect, in friendships and relationships from the start.

Hey Mike,
Great show as always. For the Beach Boys 50th Anniversary shows at the Beacon, I got 2 tix, 11th row center for $150 each. Bought em less than a week before the show. I'm convinced they were VIP seats initially but went unsold for $500 a piece. Not really fair to the early buyers. But I got lucky. Nice chatting with you at the Stomp, by the way.
