A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hamilton ist interesting technical-wise (mix of oil-phorealism / collage / print).
We had an retrospective here some ten years ago or so.

Did you know that the artwork for Beatles White Album is by him.
Conception was to create a counter-part to Sgt. Pepper.
(Sgt. Pepper is by Peter Blake, so both are by major Pop-Art-artists.)

- have to mention then the Richard Chang project to buy White Albums :
rutherfordchang.com...
- he speculates that maybe the staining & decoration what-have-you that would happen to the White Album are what Hamilton had in mind in the 1st place...

another gateway for western influences was finnish tv. it was the only non-commie tv signal that could be captured in the western ussr. folks in estonia hacked antennas and recorded stuff. "estonians were the only soviets that knew that lech walenska had a moustache." the ussr was full of tapes of western movies with finnish subtitles. a cool techie footnote to the cold war.

All I can say is I've seen that movie the Lives of Others and would actually be more surprised when they didn't spy on foreigners.
