However, I have NO sense as to when WFMU's gleeful DJs are just barely able to keep up the energy they save for as long as they're on, and which ones are itching to have more time. They ALL sound like they could keep going forever, but I know that's just a wonderful act in the case of many of them.

I coach children in football, and unless you're in the middle of it, and possibly not even then (because people hide their feelings), you often can't tell whether a coach or administrator wants more responsibility or less, and they themselves may not even be the best judge of that. I don't envy Ken his job (although these days I'm so broke I envy almost everyone for their jobs), as I don't the chief of operations at the football club where I coach.
