Hi Gary! Hi all other friends! Won't be as loquacious as usual, shoring up timbers for yet another super hard rain. Also running down the street to get 2 slices of reasonably close to NYC style pizza from 1 of the best Durham food trucks (even though wheat & I don't get along on multiple levels) because once in a blue moon temporary joy needs to happen.

Heya @ndbob, @ljfw, @doug, and LE GARY!
Love ye ye. Hate the French language. Only course I ever dropped. Picture this: Pretty darn prestigious college with awesome housing. My bedroom = 1 floor down and 1 wee campus crossing across from French classroom (seriously, once downstairs & off porch, a fit person could leap frog to class). So yeah, I'd wake @7:45, brush teeth, and leap frog to 8am class.
Vocab - 100%. Comprehension 100%. Speaking < 0%. My professor refused to believe I was spending at least an hour a day in the language lab, 'til she went & checked the records personally. I CANNOT MAKE FRENCH SOUNDS, CANNOT. Professor gave me an A for 1st semester & let me drop 2nd semester with no consequence, I thank her to this day for that kindness.

@RRN63 - I am simply pathetic. German/French by blood (one side mostly Alsace Lorraine, confusing), and can't make any rolls, trills or gutteral glottals. If I'd been born in France or Germany I'd be mute! Doesn't help that my dad who left Germany at age 7 and subsequently fought for US in WWII refused to teach me German and actually really, really did forget all of his birth language except for liebchen (my dog's name xo) and dumkopf (all purpose insult)

Let's go take a walk. How lucky we are to be born!

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

I've lost my glasses. It's gonna be a party!

Soldiers have left covered with confetti.

Time is a boat (and) the Earth is a cake.

This world is (like) a garden. Let's hold hands.

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

(As) we stroll around (the air will be fuelled with) the smell of tar.

In the papers left lying around all as white as a headache

As white as (not-so-)white near build sites sleeping.

Let's eat doughnut galore and fries and chicken.

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

We shall be watching as the bruised and swollen city is consumed away by fire.

This city is a funfair. I've put on my dress with moir patterns.

My brother is a loser (after all) he is dead.

Let's devour each other in some motel.

There'll be cigarette butts in the sink.

At dawn the injured will cough no more.

We will have a baby (and) we'll hear him cry.

Like boiling water children are all (barking) mad.

Let's go take a walk. How lucky we are to be born!

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

I've lost my glasses. It's gonna be a party!

Soldiers have left covered with confetti.

I can't take credit for translating, just finding. I was sucked in by the line about "doughnut galore and fries and chicken". THAT I could understand.

@Hyde, I know, right? If I lived a little closer than northern NJ, I'd get out to Flushing more often. It's just like going to China, but quicker, friendlier, less traumatic, and w/cleaner bathrooms. (Not CLEAN bathrooms, but cleanER.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm

Ah, okay. I feel like there needs to be a field trip to outer Queens at some point with some of y'all locals

@Gary @Ike would love to do that. Is the 1$ duck bun place still in Flushing? That was amazing last time I went. Also, the meat on a stick vendors are killer. I also hear rumblings about lots of fantastic Korean places in Queens these days...road trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm

Many Korean places, yes, though I haven't tried them yet. I've got big love for Little Pepper + Grand Szechuan

One thing that sucks about the gas explosion this morning (obviously besides the loss of life, the wounded, loss of property, etc), is that one of the stores was a new used piano store that also fixed up old pianos. There can't be too many of those left around in East Harlem.

I once went to a great Chinese-Korean place called Ming Chan Dong in Flushing. I wonder if it's still there. It had GIANT kimchi buns. We only got in because I brought a Chinese speaker with me, though: cardboardrobot.livejournal.com...
Haven't tried much Korean out there beyond that.

@Ike oh, damn. I sort of love that you need someone fluent to get in the door. Last time I went to Manhattan chinatown I went to a Fujian place where we had to talk our way in because the place was filled with old guys who I think were bummed out because with us there they couldn't smoke cigarettes inside.

What was that Dutronc cover of?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Gary:

Les Cactus? I'm not sure if it was a cover or not ... will have to do a bit of research and post here if/when I find anything ...
  10:14pm
Steven:

Sorry, maybe before or after Dutronc - the tune with the very fast rhythm guitar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Gary:

Mareva Galanter did 7h du Matin before the Dutronc, and that I think was originally recorded by Jacqueline Taieb. But my guess is you mean the song after Ductronc, which was Ca Plane Pour Moi. The original was recorded by Plastic Bertrand. (Although he did not, it was revealed later, actually sing it himself)
  10:45pm
Steven:

Gary, thank you, yes Plastic Bertrand 1977. Long ago and far away...
