Avatar 4:33pm

@Longtime Listener Back in Joe's day we still had enough critical thinking skills to 'memorize'. Now we simply communicate in superficial 'image' that require only the intended meaning behind the image as symbol

@mariano The perfect copy however will not realize that. If the copy is truely perfect it is actually the real you.

The problem you seem to have is that the original you experienced destruction.

My son says Joe Frank is scary. I was describing how Joe's vocal cadence, and his looped and layered sounds, is kind of a signature of his art. Then teleporation happened. I didn't convince him to keep listening.

I love Partch's interpretations of Ancient Greek music. At one time I had to study AG and since then I've always been really interested in what ancient music sounded like.
Avatar 5:16pm
Whooda:

@Mariano It would be an interesting study to learn the history of the 'language' of musical sounds. For example why we associate certain sounds as 'sad', or 'introspective' or even 'psychedelic'.

Heydee Ho Matt from Springfield.
Avatar 5:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Whooda: The "heaviness" of Minor chords is probably what makes them feel "sad" on a primal level. Some of that goes all the way back to the beginning of Western music's Renaissance codification; for if Minor chords weren't "sad", they wouldn't be "Minor"...
Avatar 5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

And, a Hi de hi de hi de ho Whooda!

@Carm: Aww man! Was that on the Scenario? I don't see one here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
mariano:

@Whooda: Oh, there was a lot of philosophy and religion associated with the different modes in AG. Plato refers to the wild youth of his day who listen to phrygian mode music that excites their passions. Can't remember much, but he and others also ascribe different moral qualities to other modes.
  5:25pm
lardo:

He sounds like Jello Biafra on valium
Avatar 5:27pm
Droll:

Whooda, I've often wondered about that, I think it's all in the microtonal parts of music -- stuff western music constrains. Microtonal music often evokes responses ordinary 12-note music does not (ie: the current music we hear).

Accurately mimicking the sound of musicians often involves noodling with microtones -- Paul McCartney's Hoffner bass has awful intonation (that we've come to associate with the sound of hit records).

@mariano I've always wondered who gets to decide that 'marches' inspire patriotism, or who proclaimed classical music as 'uplifting' or Joe Walsh as ass-kicking guitar work. OK, I guess the Joe Walsh thing *is* pretty obvious.

  5:33pm
Laura L:

And "Picture Mommy Dead" too! Harry Lindgren did a lotta work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
mariano:

@Whooda: Some of it's in the Republic (theoryofmusic.wordpress.com...), but if you Google Plato and musical modes you should get a lot of hits. Funny thing is, because of Medieval misreadings, our current modes and their AG counterparts don't correspond perfectly.
Avatar 5:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

I do enjoy her Simpsons recaps! I listen to her Archives more frequently since that segment started. (AND I'm wicked envious how much Simpsons NYC's syndicated broadcaster apparently gives their fans! Since DC's moved over from Fox to My20 they only show them after prime time on weeknights!)
Avatar 5:37pm
Whooda:

@mariano Thanks for the link. Thinking (over thinking) this idea, I would guess Harry Lindgren is widely responsible for how we interpret sound to image as he was, pardon the pun, instrumental in combining which sounds we see associated with which (moving) images.

@Mariano Here the philosopher claims which melodies match which emotions, but gives no empirical evidence why, ". . . but rather to discover what rhythms are the expressions of a courageous and harmonious life; and when we have found them, we shall adapt the foot and the melody to words having a like spirit, not the words to the foot and melody."
Avatar 5:48pm
Whooda:

@Mariano I only know of Harry Lindgren what Irwin just told us. He was at the forefront of 'talkies' and worked for another 30 years or more as a movie sound engineer. So, by logic, we owe our interpretation of sound/film associations largely, in part, to him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
mariano:

@Whooda: Plato's the wrong place to be looking for empirical anything. He more or less felt that all you needed was pure reason to explore the mysteries of the cosmos, but he usually confused pure reason with his own opinions and prejudices. Sorry I didn't hear Irwin talking about HL, downside of listening while I work!

Avatar 5:54pm

@Mariano I was being a bit ironic in that it's impossible to associate emotion with any specific melody or scale or composition. Like Plato, someone just has to say it is so. My question is *who* got to say it's is so. In this respect I have equal authority as Plato to say so.

@Whooda: Yeah, in the end it boils down to someone's personal opinion. Plato is usually thought of fondly these days, but he definitely had his more unsavory, authoritarian side, as in his musical opinions. The closest thing we have to his Republic today would be North Korea, and that's hardly an exaggeration!
