Hi Dave, good evening.

Hey there, George.

Your full name is "Captain Dave Fun Mandl, Esq. XIV"? Really?
  10:21pm
doca:

this one is great, isn't it? alien and non-alien ears are all pleased
Avatar 10:23pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Well, not the XIVth, but otherwise, yeah.
Avatar 10:27pm
Droll:

I don't know why contrabass goes by so many names. The difference between a "Violin" and a "Fiddle" is a violin has "strings" and a fiddle has "strangs".
Avatar 10:33pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Ah, right, "contrabass." Is there no end to the names for that thing?
  10:42pm
tomB:

I propose we all agree to henceforth use the term string euphonium. Any objections?
  10:45pm
P-90:

Ahoy Capt. Dave "Fun" Mandl and fellow Mandellians
re: "contrabass": I'm reminded that esteemed electric bass guitarist Anthony Jackson, acknowledged as the originator of the six-string electric bass guitar, has always referred to it as the "contrabass guitar", a name that seemed like it was going to stick back in the '80s, though it's wound up being known as "six-string bass."
---just to further complicate the contrabass thing
Avatar 10:47pm
Dave Mandl:

Hi P-90. Well, 6-string basses were around for years before he came along, though they were a little different from the 6-string basses of today. There's also "tenor guitar," which you rarely see, but it exists.
Avatar 10:49pm

He must really like macarons.
Avatar 10:50pm
Dave Mandl:

@fleep: Hahaha. Or has OCD.

P-90:

What word was that repeating backwards? Anyone know? At first I thought it was William Shatner saying "Priceline!", but that's not quite it.

What's he chantanting about, Dave?
Avatar 11:10pm
Droll:

Like Mandl always says, "Bass is just an oversize guitar played by guitar flunkies." By any other name, it's just a big guitar.
Avatar 11:12pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey Holly in NC. So many Hollys! (Hollies?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
pacific standard simon:

@12539 - Coulda sworn I heard some bad words in there; something about "mon cul".
Avatar 11:15pm
Dave Mandl:

@pss: That was just your dirty mind.
Avatar 11:16pm
Holly in NC:

Oh please no Hollies, Hollis, or Hollees. Please no. Cute spelling wrecks a perfectly fine & relatively baggage-free name.

BTW I can't wait to get the Martoc reissue.

Nico, you creepy woman...

Question for the chat-board hive-mind: HollyT was telling me there were no songs about Holly. I thought of the Left Banke song "Holly." Can you think of any others?

@HollyT: Yeah, Morricone was a workman when it came to soundtracks. Some movies were amazing, many were forgettable. But his music was always amazing.

Weezer - "Buddy Holly"
Andy Williams - "Holly"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm

I have to say, the words to the Andy Williams song sound like the old dude was experimenting with acid.
Avatar 11:48pm

'Wholly' doesn't count, does it?
I'm thinking a title like,'Wholly Holly' would lead to much misinterpretation.
Avatar 11:54pm
Dave Mandl:

@pss: I'm curious about that Andy Williams song now. I don't think I've ever heard it.
Avatar 11:56pm

Thanks, DM!

Nice job crowd-sourcing the Holly list, yinz! I didn't even think of the ones I do have.
