now taking bets: who will win in this colossal fight to the finish, this dj battle of epic proportions: the incumbent Kurt Gottschalk or the insurgent Rich Hazelton? vote now and help to decide the fate of all mankind listening to this show.

wow julius eastman.
thanks for the alt 4th, whilst(?! just slipped out, am in an international mood) just not so into the usa. I'm cleaning the apt and enjoying the cool windy nyc day from the wide open windows. And no family obligations or group bbq boredom...though I am probably the boring one not into drinking and shouting about futbol.
Love the rain and esp the thunderstorms; nyc foliage is so lush this year.
looking forward to rest of show tho not so into hearing the Ives, Cohen- but for the sake of cultural history why not?
Patriotic? Can I handle the rest of the show? I love both your shows in general so will hang in..

So, Hank Snow---or his replicant--IS on the playlist!
Nice one, Kurt.

Sesquicentennial is the 150th anniversary. 250th would be the sestercentennial.
Dave in PA:

What is he playing that geetar with - a nickel?
Marc Garber:

I thought sestercentennial was when your female sibling turned 100.

Didn't Chadbourne do one about racist Greensboro politician Billy Yow getting a golden shower?

Nice rainy-day American Music -- diggin' it!

Woody Guthrie is just what i was about to call in to request. His music is the epitome of what patriotic music should be. He was both equally critical as he was proud to be an American.

"You're A Grand Ole Flag." By George M. Cohan. What's more patriotic than our flag?

If we can hear Pete Seegers version of Ode to Joy, that would be phenomenal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm

I'm seconding the Seeger request!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm

Hmm, now that we've had 2 Leonard Bernstein appearances, I wonder if there will be a third? What with "Songfest" and "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue", there's still some America-themed Bernstein to go.
Dave in PA:

I remember about 25 years ago hearing a radio program that I think was put together by a DJ with an American theme - mostly music from the 60s/70s - and I heard it more than once over the years - but I would have a hard time pinpointing it now - anyone have a clue what I am talking about?

Heya Kurt, happy 4th to ya. Long time no listen ...
Dave in PA:

Bernstein was *not* a "bear" - discuss...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm

@Dave: but was he a stein?
Avatar 4:45pm

It's rally round the flag! Charles Ives sings They Are There:

@Dave: perhaps Stan Freburg? He had a lot of comedy-based Americana stuff.
Dave in PA:

My memories are soo fuzzy now... damn you, ethanol!

I'm sorry...
Eric the Half a Bee:

God, remember going to a Yes concert at Roosevelt Field right in your ('FMU) hometown, with Yes version of America you played blaring on the car stereo as I drove up the Turnpike. And MX-80 Sound; have always enjoyed their entry on the Ralph Records sampler released when writer of Left my Heart in San Francisco passed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm

Aw, put the Meat Puppets on the playlist! How am I supposed to star them if they're not there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm

Yay, thanks guys!
andy the painter:

may I suggest "democracy is coming (to the USA)" by mr L Cohen?

I think the title track to an album from the nineties?

happy fourth! thanks!
Eric the Half a Bee:

Damn, dude, James Blood: ya killin! America, do you remember the love? Next you'll be spinning Ornette's Skies over America...

This sounds like some activity that is not eating.

Enjoying the balance of good vs. evil USA in the broadcast today. Thanks guys!
Remember: light fuse and get away!
