Sorry to hear it -- I'll refrain from asking you any more questions, so you can speak as you please.

I'm afraid there are limitations other than cloud cover that prevent me from observing Manhattan sunsets.

@RevolutionRabbitNov63: Manhattan-henge is not as cared about as you think. Other than bloggers. I think Gothamist get’s a nice boost in page-views when that happens. I like to just call it sunset & experience it all the time.

I just found this Sugarcane Harris record online, Sugarcane's Got The Blues, recorded at the Berliner Jazztage Festival in 1971, with THIS awesome line-up:

Don “Sugarcane” Harris (electric violin, vocals),
Volker Kriegel (guitar),
Terje Rypdal (guitar),
Wolfgang Dauner (piano),
Neville Whitehead (bass) &
Robert Wyatt (drums).

Haven't listened to it yet, but it made me think of this show.

Sugarcane Harris with Terje Rypdal & Robert Wyatt? I need to hear that record.

@pss: now I gotta ask: What was the supper menu?

The thing about Yes is no matter how much anyone wants to take a dump on them, the musical family tree that band is connected to is fairly amazing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

pss: Yeah - & Costello called Ray Charles 'a stupid blind nigger' - when harrassed enuff inthe 70s in the MidWest; Lydon was a Hawkwind acidhead - purely a matter of record...

Still waiting to hear from one punker who will admit to enjoying some form of classical music. I know they're out there...
  10:34pm
JakeGould:

John Lydon was antagonistic? *faints*
Avatar 10:37pm
Droll:

Jake, No fair! Yes is it's own family tree -- most bands don't have 27 members and book shows two lineups at a time.
  10:38pm
Carmichael:

I loves me some acoustic droning. Do NOT change keys.
  10:40pm
JakeGould:

@Droll The reason I mention the “Yes” hate is I have heard some cliched B.S. from aging punks who complain about “Yes” in the 1970s & how the Ramones changed the world. Which I understand to a point. But “Yes” is a bit more than just a band to have a dichotomy with. Their prog rock noodling is horrid, but their first few albums are great. I hate Jethro Tull but when they were good, wow… They were good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
pacific standard simon:

@Rabbit - Anyone who could read between the lines knew what Elvis (in his drunken, stupid way) meant -- that the people he was addressing (Stephen Stills, et al) were pathetic for trying to imitate people they couldn't -- and WOULDN'T -- want to BE.

Or maybe that's just my take.
  10:43pm
JakeGould:

To be fair, all reports on Elvis Costello point to him being a pro to-twee a-hole. So all fair.
Avatar 10:44pm
Droll:

Yes are horrid noodlers? You must be looking for a fight. I'd like to remind you it's you against 35 current and former Yes members.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
pacific standard simon:

That's fair. He probably is. I just reserve the right as to how I think about him being one.
  10:46pm
JakeGould:

Prog rockers will lose in any fight. One push & suddenly they are noodling on a bunch of oddball instruments in a corner, alone.
  10:47pm
marmalade kitty:

just say No
Avatar 10:48pm
Peteski:

I'm listening with headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
pacific standard simon:

All I remember about Yes is that I kinda liked them when I was VERY stoned in '72. And didn't have many current records to compare theirs to. Otherwise, not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...every Genre has it's good & crap, is all it is
...I'm still getting used to the idea that people consider Styx & Kansas 'Prog' (...anybody here would probably argree that Van der Graf Generator are more 'Punk' that a lot of what gets listened to in High Schools by kids w/ purple hair now...no names...)
...When & Where I came from - Punk seemed like much more of a reaction against endless years of Disco than any Prog Noodling - but I know that in der Cities - it was a completely different story !!...
  10:52pm
JakeGould:

To me prog rock is like soda or beef jerky: I get urges for them every now and then, I have some, I like it, then I feel sick for a few days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
pacific standard simon:

I could listen to a 3-hour prog show, but not a half-hour Yes show.
Avatar 10:54pm

Okay -- Everyone go to your corner, alone, except Jake, who's going to be in the middle acting all popular without us while listening to 4/4 music in a major key.

"Horrid Noodlers" makes me think of soloists like Kenny G and Frank Zappa -- they play for 7-13 minutes but only about 20-30 seconds of it is good stuff.

P-90, Small milestone doesn't even begin to overestimate the importance of that remark.
And I'm awfully sorry about the Lute, it's got a low-output humbucker, but I know you like the single-coils. It also needs to be recapped. I recommend dimeing all the knobs for best tone.

Folks, I am sorry. I am genuinely sorry about my prig rock hate tonight. If there is ever a real-world meet up of the WFMU commentors here, I will personally buy each of you a small a small decent appetizer and/or drink of your choice. And if you want to judge me, I will bring along my iPhone so you can see what I carry in my pocket all day & laugh at me. My Jim Croce. My Steely Dan. My Billy Joel.

@Carmichael: Yeah, well sometimes the alternate tunings and the fretless neck and the slide neck and the 10-string come in handy

Jake, does the Bushwick Open Studios app do anything outside of the Open Studio week?
  11:42pm
JakeGould:

@PSS Here in Brooklyn one of my favorite things to do is to go to the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library & see which local musician/actor dropped off a pile of CDs or DVDs. So many Dan Zanes CDs and copies of Stanley Tucci’s “Big Night.”
  11:42pm

No worries, Jake. Everyone is frustrated at why the crappy music sells, and the good music gets buried. We just haven't come to terms on which is which. I have teenagers, so I feel I'm coming closer to the eternal truth.

"Prig Rock" would be, like, Up With People, and The New Christy Minstrels, and The Kingston Trio -- right?
  11:43pm

@12539: Nope. The Bushwick Open Studios app does not much. Does keep a nice record of artists studios, but as a developer in the art world I am impressed by how well it works.

@PSS My other favorite thing is to go to this one thrift store in Brooklyn Heights (really richie rich neighborhood) & see what stack of CDs some local rich spinster with delusions of cabaret dropped off a pile of CDs they probably only sold a few times on some bad website or at a local community fundraiser.

If “Yes” is playing “Fragile” & “Close to the Edge” in their entirety, then I think we can all agree on something: Laser shows need to come back. Period.

Dave, I'm throwing caution to the wind here and going over the 8 comment limit to thank you for another great show. So, Thanks.

I must add that this was an excellent show.

If, by "laser shows", you mean the audience pointing lasers at each other until someone loses an eye... then I'm all in favor.

Squire, Howe, White, Downes, Davison playing Fragile? That's only 2/5 classic. Gotta have Bruford, Alan doesn't have the crisp snare... oh, wait, that show is in a few weeks.

Thanks, DM. Have a good week!

Nevermind that comment about "no more recorded music". Fine show, Mr. Dave M, as always.

It's always fun 'n' games until someone loses an eye...
