I just visited the Kickstarter page... that doc sounds like it will be wonderful if it gets made. Shirley's return to public life (to whatever extent that is) is such an unexpected pleasure... never thought I'd see it.

Whoa, a lot of throwing down of the DJ gauntlet in that mic break! ;)

Charming accompaniment on "Lancashire Lass."

dale:

love the sound of her voice, gothic, far away and sad. like karen dalton without all the cigarettes. jacqui mcshee could get there sometimes.

i have this prospect before us record and never bonded with it. need to relisten.

Marmalade Kitty:

Loving the show Jeffrey..I once heard a folk music hour dedicated to a wonderful female artist from the late 60's early 70's folk revival, unfortunately the name has since been erased from my memory!? I have no idea, i don't listen to enough folk music to short cut a search either :(

Enjoying the blues touch on the guitar here. Davy Graham, I presume.

There is a place in the netherlands called Diemen

Many of the recordings that Lomax and Collins recorded during their trip together are available on CDs from Smithsonian Folkways. An absolutely essential collection of American music from a time that has long vanished.

Great and revealing interview.
Surprised by Collins' comments about Dick Gaughan's accent

cool jack - i'll have to give a listen

Reference the photographs of the great Walker Evans for depictions of poverty in the southern USA, albeit from an earlier time, the 1930s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am

mr. fox has had fair play on fmu. i have their record 'he came from the mountains', which is just billed as bob and carole pegg

Interesting to hear this. I lived in Appalachia for a long time. It's got its dark side. Some folks suspicious. It has been exploited from outside. But then there's a friendliness too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am
Jeffrey Davison:

Shirley Collins does comment on the generosity of many of the people they met on their journey.
Avatar 8:28am
kat330:

I was part of a youth group who went to Hazard, KY, to paint a 2-room schoolhouse and have activities with the children -- an eye-opener to the poverty of the area. That was late 60s, but still plenty of poverty in the U.S.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am
Jeffrey Davison:

Even in New York City, a very rich city, something like 20% of the population lives below the poverty line, and many others live just above that line and are still essentially poor.
  8:30am
Marmalade Kitty:

capitalism = poverty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30am

- hell - here in NorthNewEngland now it's not impossible to go down the wrong road & pull in the wrong drive & be 'greeted' by 'an NRA supporter' feeling territorial...

Yes, in Appalachia, along with poverty, in the 1960s-'70s, was a great revival of Appalachian music and culture, much of it derived from England, Scotland, Ireland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's forgotten how much Capitalism came into question when the Depression hit & before WWII. ow - even some (not too many) 'Conservative' Wall Street types have begun to ask what Wealth really is. Is it a system based on always higher & more (like the Dow) - or is it clean water & air, topsoil & apple trees ? Robert Kennedy said it all...
  8:44am
tranewreck:

Seduction of the Innocent was an insidious diatribe on the danger of comics that drew on some bogus studies and gave weight to the Comic Code and censorship
Avatar 8:45am

Just wondering, is there a record shop in the NYC/Nj area that specializes or at least carries some of this great UK folk on LP/CD?
Avatar 8:45am
glenn:

cape breton is beeyootiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am
Jeffrey Davison:

There is no record store that specializes in this music, but Still Records from Northampton Mass has lots of US and UK/Irish folk. The WFMU record fair is also a good place to find these albums.
  8:48am

cartoons have as much potential as any media source to influence it's subjects
