Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
...yeah - just missed the moving 'Somewhere' - inspiration for Lennon's 'There's A Place' in '63 reportedly
...& JamesBrown: just snagged a newspaper article on the Jagger-Produced biopic 'Get On Up'...
Revolution Rabbit Nov63: That was part of the songwriting magic of early Lennon-McCartney: They weren't inspired exclusively by "cool" sources such as rock 'n' roll, which was the limiting factor of many of their lessers.
MAN! i had it bad for karen valentine as a teen....thanks for jogging my brainpan gaylord

Funny how I can instantly identify something like this (Rm. 222)from the first few beats of the intro, long before the melody even starts, even though its almost half a century old (!)-- such is it's nostalgic significance.
@dale: Show up for the theme songs in odd meter and stay for the Karen Valentine memories!

@ dale: Karen Valentine was in fact the object, for many pre-teen boys, of that peculiar kind of sexual crush one can have before one even reaches puberty and becomes "sexual."
...okay - read the thing in Fri.'s WSJ: Jagger producing 'GetOnUp' sounds like a good thing - we'll see
...little blurbs about:
- Andre3000 being Jimi: it's '66-7 before the 1st album only, prob. wise; seems like got the *look* right anyhow, so we'll see about the rest (no song rights btw)
- Don Cheedle's doing a few days late in Miles Davis' life
- & Zoe Saldana will be Nina Simone in a one for which the director sued the prod. co. but withdrew it...
