Avatar 9:03pm
Dave Mandl:

Evening, all.
  9:05pm
Carmichael:

Caught you at the beginning, for once Dave. Ready for music fun, and the throng of bbq friends are listening. But no pressure ...
  9:06pm
JakeGould:

Hey Dave. Read about WFMU not having a Marshal Tucker Band song. That seems unpossible.
Avatar 9:09pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey there Carmichael, Jake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Uncle Michael:

Holy mackerel.
Avatar 9:10pm
Dave Mandl:

@Jake: I'm guessing we have some Marshall Tucker in the basement, where records get bumped when we run out of room in the main library. Didn't have time to go down there, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Uncle Michael:

No MYB? Forfend! Green grass and high tides FOREVER.

I'm back. Whoopee.
Avatar 9:14pm
Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Hey! And evening UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
pacific standard simon:

Perhaps UM will remedy that situation when he does the Unofficial Loss Leaders Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
pacific standard simon:

I confess -- I listened to The Best of The Moody Blues all the way through, yesterday, and did not find the experience entirely unpleasant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Uncle Michael:

MTB are represented in the outtakes, for sure.
  9:26pm
JakeGould:

PSS, sounds like my experience with Blue Oyster Cult sat week… Except I visibly “bleeeched” when it was over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Uncle Michael:

Interesting...tenor guitar is an actual, specific instrument.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Uncle Michael:

Howard Devoto?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Uncle Michael:

n/m I'm embarrassed now
  9:31pm
Carmichael:

The Magazines. Now we're talking!
Avatar 9:31pm
Dave Mandl:

@UM: Yup. And you're right about tenor guitars. I once saw a tenor version of a Fender Telecaster, a pretty rare thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
pacific standard simon:

BOC is one of those bands, like ZZ Top, whose official best-ofs would never match what I would put together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm really only familiar with tenor guitars as acoustic instruments. A tenor tele sounds pretty neat-o.
  9:34pm
Carmichael:

HEEP!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
pacific standard simon:

The range of ukuleles is: soprano, concert, tenor and baritone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

Wayback Machine! Quick, reach for the Yes, you can have heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Siriusly:

I was gonna bet Captain Beyond, should'a known, had all the Heep records
  9:37pm
JakeGould:

Well, Blue Oyster Cult is just too… I dunno… Rush is juvenile & can tolerate them based on that… Blue Oyster Cult is just so… Post adolescent yet not mature. I can’t stand it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
pacific standard simon:

Jake - Think of it as "comedy metal" -- THEY did.
  9:43pm
JakeGould:

That term “Comedy Metal” seems vile. Like all of the sudden Kevin DuBrow is on stage, turns around & is wearing a Groucho Nose/Glasses/Mustache thing… Because that’s comedy! God that term! Thank you for coining it but so vile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Uncle Michael:

There's non-comedy metal?
Avatar 9:44pm
northguineahills:

David Cheworth, that was nice!
  9:44pm
Carmichael:

You buncha punks wouldn't know rock if it bit you in the underwear. Actually, you're right about Rush. But BOC are the saviors of western civilization! You can't play them in Russia. And you can't lay rubber in front of the Dairy Queen either.
  9:46pm
JakeGould:

Carmichael, you don't tug on Superman's cape… You don't spit into the wind… You don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger… And you don't mess around with Dairy Queen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Uncle Michael:

Nice Midwestern t-storm about to hit. Nostalgic, Simon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
pacific standard simon:

I gotta eat supper.
  9:48pm
JakeGould:

Uncle Michael, we had a severe rain alert or something like that here in NYC/NJ area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
pacific standard simon:

Very. I love those things. Summer of '81, tornado tore the roof of the Lawrence K Mart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Uncle Michael:

I'll take Shakti for my McLaughlin fix, usually...but I liked that Mahavishnu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Uncle Michael:

Tear the roof off the sucker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Uncle Michael:

In 1971-1972, Tull was the best ban I'd ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Uncle Michael:

I didn't stop loving that band till War Child. I'm not a big fan anymore but I still play the early stuff sometimes.
  Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
12539:

Late, but not too late for the Tull.
  9:56pm
?:

horrific recordings lol
  9:56pm
JakeGould:

When did Tull really degrade? 1980s? Or 1990s? Wasn’t there a “jtull.com” album?
Avatar 9:56pm
Dave Mandl:

Check out live footage from 1970-ish. Unbelievably hot live band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Uncle Michael:

I think "Benefit" was the first cassette tape I ever owned. My cousin Peter gave it to me for Hanukkah.
Avatar 9:57pm
Dave Mandl:

I stuck with them a lot longer than most people, till maybe '78. After that it was a rapid decline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
Uncle Michael:

I think Tull, before Anderson decided it wasn't to be a guitar band, is really underrated.

Are we contemporaries, Dave? I'm 54. I never saw them live till '79...and then only out of curiosity.
  9:59pm
JakeGould:

Kind of sad how bands tear on past their prime. Pressures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
SSS:

I saw them in '72. They were great! Isn't Ian A. running a smoked salmon business? For many years now.
Avatar 10:02pm
Dave Mandl:

UM: I started going to concerts very young, so I saw them in the early '70s. By '79 I'd stopped following them.
  10:02pm
Carmichael:

I saw Tull live 4 times between about 73 to 81 or so. I always thought they were a powerful live act. But I'm from Ireland, and that style of music is way more popular there than here.
Avatar 10:03pm
Dave Mandl:

@SSS: Yeah, a salmon farm in Scotland. One of the biggest salmon companies in the world, I think, if not the biggest.
  10:04pm
Carmichael:

Great, now I want some dalmon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
SSS:

I think it so cool to just keep moving....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Uncle Michael:

I'd stopped following them too. But in '79 I seemed to go to every show. Having once loved them, I went. My concert history begins in '72 but alas, I didn't catch the Thick As A Brick tour.

@Carmichael: I've got an older sister who exposed me to all that stuff. She used to see Tull at the Fillmore, and they supposedly kicked ass. There's some footage floating around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
pacific standard simon:

Back again, with no Tull stories at all. Never saw them. Still like a lot of the pre-1971 stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
pacific standard simon:

Dave, you could pepper your show with Eric Carbonara tracks, and see if anybody gets the joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
SSS:

My older sister and her first husband wanted to take me to see Zappa at the Filmore for my birthday, but my parents stopped it for, fear that some "would stick a needle in my arm". After hearing that I bought my own tickets.
  10:15pm
Carmichael:

@Dave: Fillmore East, I presume? I saw many concerts in SF, at the original Fillmore.
  10:15pm
Jamie Farr:

Jethro Tull were awful. just sayin'.
Avatar 10:16pm
Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: Yeah, NYC.
@Jamie: Fair comment.

Yep, east coast boy by and large.

Avatar 10:27pm

Hiya, rw. And WELCOME, Mr. amEdeo!
  10:28pm
JakeGould:

So now that you are all nostalgic about concerts & NYC, did anyone here go to concerts at an old movie theater in Borough Park that now structurally is still around but a Hassidic furniture warehouse? I shit you not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
pacific standard simon:

I recommend the current version of Ms Marvel, set in Jersey City. The villain has a cockatiel head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Uncle Michael:

I've never been to Jersey City. If I correct that oversight, I won't mess.
  10:30pm
Carmichael:

Jake, are they the Sofa Kings?
  10:30pm
JakeGould:

I’ve been to Jersey City & thinking of moving there.
  10:31pm
rw:

Although DM's story about JT's bass player is a little sad, I have a half-baked theory that the more correctly one lives one's life the more frequently these sorts of coincidences occur.
  10:32pm
JakeGould:

Sofa Kings? Not 100% sure. Will dig up some specifics on the Google now.
Avatar 10:32pm

@Jake: Ha, of course. It was originally the Loews 46th St., then became Bananafish Garden. I saw a few shows there when I was a teenager.

Dave, this is just exactly the chill out I needed tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

I've never owned a Three Dog Night album, but a hell of a lot of their songs are burned into my memory. They had great taste in songs to cover, and turned me on to a lot of songwriters.
