Hail DJ Kurt G and all the little Minotauruses

no crackin' on Prince
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm DCE:

I meant "cracklin'" actually

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm barney.grubbs:

is this the new prince-sunn 0)))?
Avatar 3:07pm BEAVO:

Just toss that Climax 45 right in the trash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

Prince should make an album with Wolfeyes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm DCE:

that would really generate a WOW
  3:09pm paula pc:

I kind of like that Climax song! it's like C-grade "Cherish". but it sure isn't Prince or Kate Bush
  3:09pm P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Caryn:

I'm now imagining that dancing bear doing Kate's "Wuthering Heights" routine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm DCE:

dancing bear phases in and out of rhythm with Boredoms. BRILLIANT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Andrew Waterloo:

I liike the Climax song on a grade of better than Afternoon Delight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm DCE:

nothing touches Afternoon Delight, man! class by itself
  3:14pm Dean:

Who knew that Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn originally intended "I Fall in Love Too Easily" to be a song about narcolepsy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Caryn:

The Climax track wouldn't have been out of place during EFD & Clay's AM throwdown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm DCE:

what is that, some type of bowed instrument? that totally makes this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Andrew Waterloo:

I knew a person who would tell me about her 'afternoon delight' so the song just has that extra wretch flavour.
  3:19pm P-90:

I've always been so into the Stop Making Sense movie that the soundtrack versions of all those songs are the definitive ones in my memory. Not that the "original versions" like this don't kick ass too; they kick lots and lots of ass.
  3:21pm P-90:

@DCE: I think you're asking about the guitar synthesizers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm DCE:

really, wow...sounded pretty good. I wouldn't have thought that technology would be worth anything in 1984!
Avatar 3:23pm chocolate monk:

kurt, awrite ya shite?
Avatar 3:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

s'up, monk! hi everyones! thanks for joining me today.
  3:25pm Torg:

I really like muffins, can you tell
  3:27pm P-90:

@DCE: that was when the Roland synth guitars were all the rage. They're completely analog which helps them sound real organic. They're the very same ones that were the foundation of the 1980's King Crimson sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm DCE:

good info, p-90!
Avatar 3:36pm Kurt Gottschalk:

mn jeff's gif will look good with every song on the show today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm DCE:

truly it will
  3:41pm paula pc:

love Martina and Neneh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Mike East:

this version makes my mouth tickle
Avatar 3:49pm Kurt Gottschalk:

understandably so!
  3:52pm Peanut:

How much more time does WFMU have to raise for the silent marathon?
  3:56pm phat:

Well, I just tuned in and it's Art Ensemble playing. Very nice.
Avatar 3:57pm Kurt Gottschalk:

we still need about $130,000, p-nut, and thanks for asking! there's a thermometer right over <<< there and i would love to see some pledges come in during my show today!
  3:57pm paula pc:

this is just what I needed
  3:57pm Peanut:

damn that is a lot of dough... if i was rich i would donate tons... i will do what i can.
Avatar 3:59pm Kurt Gottschalk:

anything you can do is great! $15 gets you a sticker to proudly display on your car or subway plus you can enter your pet (or pet of choice) into our mascot contest!
Avatar 3:59pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey paula! hi phat!
  3:59pm cglenn:

hey Kurt its Chris Glenn I sang the song the other night Jesus on a bad day at the amateur hour ,Monty Hall that you appreciated and I thank you for that appreciation love you show just wanted to say hi.
  4:01pm Dean:

That little bump in the pledge total was my two cents, barely an exaggeration, but every little bit helps, I hope.
Avatar 4:02pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey chris! yeah, that was great. really.

everybody, go back and check the seven second delay archive from this week to hear chris's song. not now, tho. later sometime. when there aren't any shows on. or, uh, yeah...

dean, every little bit DOES help. thanks so much. and paula, dave and logan. thanks to everyone supporting wfmu!
  4:07pm paula pc:

happy to pledge. you play jazz! thank you!!!
  4:08pm paula pc:

OH this is great!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm rsj:

this this some kind of joke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm rsj:

i need some face melting guitar pronto
  4:20pm paula pc:

i am just all for Prince doing anything ever, where he's showing his love...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Caryn:

Now you just need to play the Plectrum Electrum track on some other show in such a way that it's on the playlist and I can star it.
  4:22pm phat:

And now, the new Prince. It is a good day.
  4:23pm phat:

This is the best bass playing I've heard in years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Caryn:

Aw bless, Kurt.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Caryn:

Depends on my mood, Kurt. Right now, the PE version. But tomorrow, when I'm more mellow, the AOA version will probably triumph.

Have to bust out the Prince avatars every now and then!
  4:35pm paula pc:

i am partial to the AOA version but it's hard to think about that while listening to this
Avatar 4:36pm rothwell:

live Maggot Brain! yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm rsj:

thanks kurt, great show!
  4:37pm phat:

You know how to make this old punk smile.
Avatar 4:38pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar 4:39pm PKNY:

That's Michael Hampton on lead for this version of Maggot Brain, not Eddie Hazel, right?
Avatar 4:40pm jamesie:

so good!
Avatar 4:40pm Kurt Gottschalk:

right, pkny
  4:44pm Dave in Vermont:

Did we lose the right channel? Or is it just me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Caryn:

I seem to have both channels, Dave.
Avatar 4:48pm Kurt Gottschalk:

you should be getting both channels. anyone else having a problem?
  4:48pm Dave in Vermont:

No right channel here
Avatar 4:49pm rothwell:

I'm in stereo
  4:51pm Dave in Vermont:

Sorry I posted twice. Maggot brain blew out my front right speaker.
Thanks Kurt.
  4:53pm Dean:

Sam Shalabi! Saw him ages ago at Victo. His 2000 Luteness CD is one of my favorites.
  4:53pm P-90:

The Pop-Up Player has been in uninterrupted stereo.
And the thermometer-thingie says 54%! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Caryn:

The dancing bear dancing to this is very endearing.
  4:54pm P-90:

Shit, another speaker succumbs to the "Maggot Brain Effect"
Avatar 4:55pm Kurt Gottschalk:

dean, love shalabi but i never even heard of that cd. which victo set were you at? the one with the donkeys by chance?
  4:59pm Dean:

I went to several during the mid-'90s through 2000 or '01. I don't recall donkeys. Luteness is perhaps his first disk. A buddy, a prof at McGill who was a charter Victo attendee, knows Shalabi and recommended the disk. It's nothing like the psychedelic, feedback-laden, Middle Eastern-flavored material he played at Victo (and on the present playlist track). It's really aptly titled: almost lute-like plucking and futzing, reminiscent of Polwechsel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Caryn:

This is mixing quite nicely with the Black Sabbath coming from the tv.
Avatar 5:03pm Kurt Gottschalk:

wow, i'd love to hear that.

he did a hilarious gig at victo where shalabi effect was on one side of the stage playing their middle eastern psychedelia alternating with the montreal band the donkeys playing stooges like songs on the other side of the stage. the donkeys were like six times louder than shalabi. back and forth they went. it was amazing.

is your friend at mcgill mike c, by chance?
Avatar 5:03pm Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn, ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Caryn:

Mixed less well with the Sting track I suddenly stumbled on while switching channels.
  5:05pm Dean:

This is the one: http://fimav.qc.ca/en/archives/fimav-2001/

And speaking of Polwechsel, that Butcher/Charles/Dorner show was stunning, as was Poire_Z. B/C/D played so quietly that the most dynamic moments were the little bursts of spittle on the mouthpieces of their instruments.

Bummer. I missed the Donkeys split show, I guess.

No, my buddy is Lawrence J. Writes (or wrote) for Signal to Noise.
Avatar 5:07pm Kurt Gottschalk:

OH! i know lawrence too! and 2001, that was the first year i went to victo! i went because otomo was playing and whenever he (or most people) come to nyc, they play with new yorkers. i wanted to hear *his* band, and then went back every year for a dozen or so.
  5:09pm P-90:

That Shalabi/Donkeys thing sounds AWEsome. Right up my alley.
Avatar 5:09pm Kurt Gottschalk:

it was amazing.

almost everyone hated it.
  5:09pm Dean:

It's a happy thought that we crossed paths at Victo. I started school again that fall, have had kids, and thus haven't been able to return. I get reviews from Lawrence. He's a great guy.

Do you happen to recall the notorious Kim Gordon show of '01?
Avatar 5:11pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i don't think we should speak of the notorious kim gordon show of '01.
Avatar 5:11pm Kurt Gottschalk:

The Notorious K.I.M.
  5:11pm Dean:

Er, which notorious kim gordon show of '01 would you mean? Never heard of it.
Avatar 5:13pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Caryn:

Okay, I think I might be able to pledge if I forgo grocery shopping for the rest of the month. Doable.
  5:18pm Dean:

Caryn: Instead of grocery shopping, dress up as something on the last day of the month and ask people for stuff. Works well for my kids.
Avatar 5:19pm Kurt Gottschalk:

groceries are for the weak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Caryn:

@Dean: if only we had trick or treating here... Alas, we dress up and ask for stuff at Easter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Caryn:

Well, I've been without groceries for a week already (been sick and staying in), so the rest of the month should go fine.
Avatar 5:36pm Kurt Gottschalk:

sorry to hear you've been ailing, caryn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Caryn:

Oh, it hasn't been too bad, Kurt. Just a cold and a stomach bug. It's not as if I have much else to do anyway.
