This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Well, hey! First Bodega Pop, now this - the GTDS stream is clearly where all the cool blogger kids are hangin' nowadays. Really looking forward to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Gary:

Damn it, Mr. Fab; I was *sure* I'd be first in!
Avatar 6:42pm Flash Strap:

Heya fellas, thanks for showin' up!

Seductive portal indeed!
Avatar 6:56pm Holly in NC:

Welcome Flash! Should've known that I'd already be late to the party ;-) Hi also MrFab, Gary & Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gary:

Hi Holly!

Running to kitchen to make a decidedly non-exotic martini - back in a flash (ha!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm fleep:

I'll have the Exotic Immensity with dressing on the side, and a plate of shrimp shumai.

I'm having a Jungle Bird! Campari, rum, pineapple, fresh lime
  7:04pm SeanG:

I'm in dude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm listener james from westwood:

Heh, folks I knew at Boston College would to to Aku-Aku in the city to go "scorpion bowling." Picking up a spare in that sport could send you to Brigham and Women's for a new liver!
Avatar 7:05pm davex:

Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

I would have loved to see the Aku-Aku. Still have Kow Loon out there, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
I'm happy to share the Scorpion Bowl, but let me finish my Fricasseed Fugu Filet first.

Stoked for the show, Evan! - Dan (Exotica Project / Office Naps)

Very much enjoying Buddy Collette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Office Naps shared a track from Buddy Collette's Tanganyika, here: officenaps.com...

Tanganyika is amazing.

Hello everyone. Hi Flash.
Avatar 7:19pm Holly in NC:

Welcome @UM. What's your poison this evening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Love the cover of Polynesia: 4.bp.blogspot.com...

Singing on this record is (I just learned) Marni Nixon. She was the greatest American playback singer for all the Hollywood stars. Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Uncle Michael:

Sazeracs. Keep 'em comin'.
Avatar 7:23pm Holly in NC:

Seriously? That's a friggin' ironed-in wrinkle, starched!

Avatar 7:25pm ndbob:

Avatar 7:26pm Holly in NC:

@UM - Sorry, was not speaking to you! All apologies, one fine Sazerac coming right up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Uncle Michael:

Happy birthday, ndbob!
Avatar 7:27pm ndbob:

ty UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Any guesses (without Googling) as to the birthplace of Mr. Chaino?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Haha, I'm definitely going into that one! At the break, I'll read his "back story" according the LP copy
Avatar 7:29pm Holly in NC:

@ndbob - happy, happy birthday!
@Doug - Isn't he American, or am I a tool?
Avatar 7:29pm ndbob:

New Jersey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Uncle Michael:

Kim Fowley has joined the choir eternal. Heaven help them.
Avatar 7:29pm ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Only about 175 miles off!
Avatar 7:30pm Holly in NC:

@UM - Oh. My. What you said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm steve:

im gonna say Lodi New Jersey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Doug Schulkind:

You're even closer.
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

Happy birthday ndbob
RIP Fowley you animal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Let's just say that young Chaino, before moving to Chicago, must've been snarfing down his share of cheesesteaks.
Avatar 7:32pm ndbob:

ty Flash! aha so very close to NJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Uncle Michael:

Pat's or Gino's?
  7:36pm Dean:

Sorry to hear about Fowley. What a character.

"Ivresse Des Profundeurs [Depths of Drunkenness]" translates roughly as "Depths of Drunkenness [Ivresse Des Profundeurs]."
  7:37pm MrFab:

That tune was Martin Denny's "Enchanted Sea." Hmm, you suppose these SEM Studio cats give Martin any credit? Great version, regardless.
Avatar 7:38pm hyde:

yay, new show. this sounds spectacular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
FYI, your right channel is coming in a little lower than your left. On the music only, not your microphone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Uncle Michael:

It won't suck so bad when I have to miss this show live, since it's gonna be a solid bet for late night archival listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm listener james from westwood:

Damn. RIP Kim Fowley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
Not on all tracks. For instance, the current track is equal in both channels.
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

huh, could be funky rips. I'll keep an eye on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Ha! Funky Rips is the name of the next new show on the Drummer Stream. No not really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm fleep:

The lost race called Philadelphia (I peeked).
Avatar 7:47pm hyde:

awwww, man. I was so looking forward to Funky Rips.
  7:47pm MrFab:

Chaino's name is pronounced Cha-EE-no, according to the back cover of one of his albums.
Of course, it being a made-up name, guess you could pronounce it however you want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Gary:

Funky Rips! Funky Rips! We! Want! Funky! Rips!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

Aha, never again will I butcher the name Chaino; yet, many more's the time I'll mispronounce a name, title, anything in French
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Uncle Michael:

Who ripped one? It's funky in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Uncle Michael:

Evan, there's a fine GTDR tradition of butchering any pronunciation not in English.
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

I'm privileged to perpetuate it!
Avatar 7:55pm hyde:

@UM sometimes even IN English!
Avatar 7:56pm ndbob:

excellent show Flash! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Uncle Michael:

So tryue, hyde...so true.
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for droppin' in Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Uncle Michael:

I just downloaded this TODAY...for MY show. I got pipped at the line...as they say! Well done.
Avatar 7:58pm Don Cow:

feeling this. one of my favorite sun ra albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Uncle Michael:

Allegedly, this is the first recording with a Mini-Moog.
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Sorry to pip you, friend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Gary:

Loving the Shankar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm listener james from westwood:

Bloody amazing first hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Uncle Michael:

Don't be sorry. I'll just pick another cut from the album. Extra fun for everyone.
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

You can't go wrong, that record is front to back amazing!
  8:09pm Dean:

That Sun Ra recording was perhaps the earliest released recording with a Minimoog. It looks like Sun Ra had made an earlier recording, "Space Proble," which was released commercially later than "Purple Moon":

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Gary:

Avatar 8:20pm glenn:

hey! what fresh hell is this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
Again, the right channel is weaker here. And on the previous track. (And possibly before, but I was having dinner and listening on my iPhone.)
Avatar 8:21pm Don Cow:

never heard that wendy track. thing was bugged out.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

Welcome to Hell, Glenn. It's fresh!
Avatar 8:22pm glenn:

and evahbody knows dinner comes before technical problems.
Avatar 8:22pm Holly in NC:

M'Boom SUCH a great album. Standing O!
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

Is everybody else experiencing a weak right channel? I can't see a cause for it on my end
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Gary:

Yes, on this track, right is weak
Avatar 8:24pm glenn:

i'm a socialist. i don't HAVE a right channel.
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

Egg on my face
  8:25pm Dean:

Yes, weak right channel on the Max Roach.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Let me know if you experience it on the next track, someone, if you don't mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Doug Schulkind:

If the egg on your face has hollandaise and Canadian (no offense, Glenn) bacon, count me in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

I will!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
The pan button on your mixer is at 12 o'clock?? (Obvious, but I thought I'd mention it.)
Avatar 8:27pm glenn:

no offense taken, but we calls it peameal, yo.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

It is. 1st thing I checked. I'm gonna swam some cords out and see if that's the issue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Doug Schulkind:

And maybe the Virtual DJ has a L-R pan setting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gary:

This symphonic thing is balanced fine l-r ... starting to suspect FUNKY RIPS
  8:28pm Dean:

I'm working with a rinky-dink setup here, including a goofy PC speaker, but VLC allows restricting output to one channel or the other played through both speakers. During the Roach, the right-restricted level was clearly lower than the left. Not so with this Prado.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Now on this track, the L/R sounds and looks (I am recording this in Audacity) more equal. Is this track playing on a channel different from the Max Roach selection? If so, then you can isolate to that other channel.
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

This is the turntable, now. It's the digital stuff that's funkin me up. Everything checks out with VDJ's balance settings though. Tuff nut
Avatar 8:32pm glenn:

i bet you didn't know there was a spring training countdown clock. now you do. www.springtrainingcountdown.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Uncle Michael:

I did know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Turntable looks good, L/R-wise. Maybe you picked up a bug in Funkyrip City.
  8:32pm SeanG:

this font is really small right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

Sounds like it's a wire from digital to mixer, or maybe the headphone hole of your computer is compromised (mine is, actually, and I have to use packing tape every time I broadcast, to poosh the cord down.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Uncle Michael:

When do pishers and kakers report?
Avatar 8:33pm glenn:

yep. and i have old man eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Gary:

In all the tech talk I totally missed out that this is Perez freakin Prado. Superhero!
Avatar 8:34pm glenn:

feb. 18.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Doug Schulkind:

I wonder if Perez Prado has ever visited the Prado. And if so, did he get free admission?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Uncle Michael:

Mine report on the 19th, I think.
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

Would Prado have preferred Goya or Bosch, had he visited the Prado? Or is he a Velasquez man?
  8:38pm Dean:

Sounds like he would have preferred David Rose.
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

@Gary: I suspect the problem emanates from that spot. Hopefully a change of cord will help
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Doug Schulkind:

He'd run out weeping after encountering Guernica, I'm quite sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Uncle Michael:

I recommend monitoring with headphones off the digital capture device that your mixer runs to...the one that's converting the analog signal to digital for the computer running SAM. That is, if that's how your signal path is set up.
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

is it still runnin weak in the right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Gary:

It's better but there's still a slightly weak right on this Tito Puente track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Doug Schulkind:

  8:48pm Dean:

Yes, still weak.
Avatar 8:49pm Holly in NC:

Ah, the 1 advantage of listening through a shitty laptop speaker - all sounds fine here ! ;-)
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

Aw dip. Sorry all
  8:50pm Dean:

TITO puente
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Check the inputs on your soundcard? Mine has a separate fader for left and right feeding into my Nicecast computer. Sometimes I bump one or the other and things get out of whack.

Hey Flash Strap, no worries. The discrepancy is in no way diminishing the majesty of the proceedings!
Avatar 8:51pm Don Cow:

got hipped to that tito puente track thru a flying lotus flip. great chune.
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

"Go your own way. What does it matter? I despise you all."

Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:58pm Holly in NC:

Thank you for a great show, Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

I enjoyed the show. Thanks, Evan.
Avatar 8:59pm hyde:

amazing stuff! I likely won't have a lot of chance to hang out on Thursday nights except on occasion, unfortunately, but I'll sure be listening to all these shows. Thanks a lot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Doug Schulkind:

What say we all catch some zzzzzzs, then meet back here in 12 hours for Give the Drummer Some? Yes. Yes, I thought you would all agree. I will bring the danish and coffee. You bring the mimosas and Irish butter.
Avatar 9:00pm Don Cow:

primo transmission, flash. big ups and many thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gary:

Thanks for the Super Thrills, Mr. Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Uncle Michael:

  9:00pm Dan Shiman:

Outstanding work, Evan - looking forward to more!
Avatar 9:01pm Holly in NC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm listener james from westwood:
