This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Evening, all!
Avatar 7:02pm ndbob:

evening Doug and Gary!

Our mission, should we choose to accept it.... We choose YES!
Avatar 7:04pm glenn:

what's a god fearin' man to do? i can't choose between hearty and flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Gary:

Howdy, Bob!
Avatar 7:05pm Little Danny:

Caribbean Moonlight is so underrated as far as Baxter's discography. Side One is DEEP.
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Oh boy Danny, I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY. It's one of the very best there is.
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

This first set will be good news for Mancini lovers
  7:09pm MrFab:

Hey, y'all!
"Touch of Evil" is such a great score. I recorded the audio off the tv as a youngster.
We def need more "Latin noir." Two great tastes that taste great together.
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Well put Mr Fab: we are in agreement
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

I think it's definitely Mancini's best work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
Make your playlist "Live." This will send your artist/song info to iTunes, the iphone app and the wfmu home page.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

aw dip. rookie mistake
  7:12pm MrFab:

"Caribbean Moonlight", really?! I just played it once or twice and thought it was too much the Sleepytime Strings Play Elevator Muzak, not enough fiery exoticness. Too subtle for my immature ears? Maybe I'd like it more now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Hahaha, toss another nickel in the kangaroo court's tin cup!
Avatar 7:14pm glenn:

yeah, but charlton heston as a mexican cop? it beggars the imagination. on the other hand, moses.
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Tastes may vary, but I think Caribbean Moonlight is just endlessly lush and VERY cleverly arranged. It's sort of the quintessential exotica version of Taboo, as far as I'm concerned
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

It's definitely not as wild n woolly as Ritual or Tamboo! though
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

The secret of Heston's Mexican cop is that, while his politics are excellent, he's the constant joke of the film. What a flick it is, too!
Avatar 7:21pm glenn:

it's a pretty great flick, from what i remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Doug Schulkind:

As a young child, my wife was obsessed with Hatari.
Avatar 7:24pm glenn:

hatari teenage riot?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm listener james from westwood:

How do, all! Dinner out w/ Dad cost me the first Mancini-rific chunk, but will review in the archives!
Avatar 7:26pm glenn:

really? the last film noir? hmmm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm listener james from westwood:

As miscasting goes, does it get more puzzling than John Wayne as Genghis Khan?
Avatar 7:30pm northguineahills:

w000! The hot water heater in my building isn't working, so, no heat or hot water. So, I took a shower and the water was so cold, I could see my breath. When washing my hair, it was like the worst ice cream headache ever, except it encompassed my whole head, Now I'm in front of my oven warming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Gary:

That's awful, NGH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Doug Schulkind:

I think you're volume should be a bit higher all 'round.
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

@ Doug: duly noted
@NGH: Stay warm, eskimo
@glenn: not THE last noir ever of course, but sort of the last major noir in the classical noir era
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

Great to have you here James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm listener james from westwood:

Great to be here! I was rushing my dad through a story about the Elks b/c I knew I had a date in the wild outdoors!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Volume BETTER!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm listener james from westwood:

ngh, I had a hot water heater here in my apt. cack on me abruptly one morning. Fastest shower I ever finished, including all those at Boy Scout Camp.
Avatar 7:44pm northguineahills:

Yeah, it was even worse then Boy Scout camp. Still shaking.

Thanks Flash, my first Martin Denny record I picked up was in a giant thrift store w/ about only 30 records. I think Laetitia Sadier mentioned him and about the same time, Kid Koala did a nice Martin Denny remix....
Avatar 7:46pm ndbob:

wow NGH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Whoa. This is spectacular!
Avatar 7:47pm ndbob:

I used to have this record
Avatar 7:47pm glenn:

now this is lush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm listener james from westwood:

Indeed. Good change my mom had this one, too.
  7:50pm Dean:

I read "William Holden" as "William Windom," and thought this is taking "My World and Welcome to It" a little too far.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

Ha! It's Holden all right, who I always like to picture as a dead body floating in a pool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm listener james from westwood:

Good chance, that should be. Long week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 7:53pm Dervish:

Les is more.
  7:54pm Dean:

Just learned that Holden was Reagan's best man and one of only two guests at his wedding to Nancy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Uncle Michael:

I wonder if Bill knew the bride when she used to rock and roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Doug Schulkind:

They say she was the best in Hollywood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm listener james from westwood:

Bill Holden got paid for that shit-eating grin. I am in the wrong profession.
Avatar 8:02pm Little Danny:

Great riff Evan. Also, a Mad Men episode from a few years back set one of Don Draper's adulterous affairs to Martin Denny's version of "Misirlou."
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for droppin' in bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Mister Dobalina:

What a great song!
  8:03pm Sandy:

Yes! Inherent Vice was awesome. Thomas Pynchon is a really interesting writer. I LOVED that they used this entire Can song in the movie. And Shasta telling her sexy story. Whew! I'll be in my bunk...
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

I wish Mad Men had delved deeper into exotica and tiki in general, but that was a great moment! I love that show tremendously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm TR In MI:

This song was also perfectly placed in the movie.
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

I know it left some people cold, and I can see why, but I thought it was the most exciting film of the year
Avatar 8:06pm northguineahills:

Gotta go, thanks Flash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm listener james from westwood:

When they went out to California in the 2nd season, IIRC, and found that alternate dimension of layabouts, is when they used that exotica "Misirlou." They also used "Telstar" to close the ep preceding it as they winged out from NYC.
Avatar 8:06pm Holly in NC:

Hello Flash & friends!
Bummed I missed Touch of Evil cuts, not that I can't play my own copy but it's so much more fun to hear via radio. Computer. Whatever.

@ngh - !!!!!!!!!!!! Ger some piping hot fluids into yourself immediately, also double up on socks and put on a hat !!!!!!! Layers!
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

warm them bones ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm listener james from westwood:

I can't have been the only WFMU fan to squee when they used Gainsbourg's "Bonnie and Clyde" in a more recent season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Mister Dobalina:

I'd ride a bike to keep the show powered alive as this song played any day! No matter how long!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Holly!

@James: didn't they use Caravan in the 1st episode too? It was something awesome, and I took note, but now i've forgotten
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Reassuring news, Mr. D!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly in NC
This is ray-D-oh, dahling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Mister Dobalina:

I only speak the truth on thursday nites at 8:10pm..just for the record!
Avatar 8:10pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - I need to hear Joe McG's intro now, sigh. yip yip yip
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

Your honesty is like Brigadoon: mystically and only occasionally manifest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm listener james from westwood:

I'd like to think they did. Don and Rachel Menken get big, exotic drinks somewhere during that ep. Seems the logical place for such a cut.
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Jesus, I don't know about you guys, but this track has my blood roiling and my eyes wild. Jaki is seriously a living gorgon of the drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm listener james from westwood:

@Flash: You are correctamundo on the pilot and "Caravan." From the Basket of Kisses blog:

Caravan by Gordon Jenkins (as Don takes the train home at the end)
Avatar 8:16pm Holly in NC:

Much love for the Dead Pigeon Suite. AFTER the show I also know want to go listen to Big Black's Dead Billy & Pigeon Kill, because dead pigeons.
Also Moonshake's Beautiful Pigeon.
So much for going to bed early!
Avatar 8:17pm Holly in NC:

^know = now. Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Uncle Michael:

Is this out on CD yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Neil Fucking Young. Exotica indeed.

Avatar 8:20pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm listener james from westwood:

Still goes great with a tall drink or the smokeable of your choice. Hell, both, if you're flush.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

You get me, James
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

Different ways of thinking about being on a beach
Avatar 8:22pm Dervish:

This song right here right now sounds perfect. Just perfect.
Avatar 8:24pm glenn:

on the beach is exotica?
Avatar 8:25pm Holly in NC:

Link's sound so recognizable. What genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Mister Dobalina:

This also sounds awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Doug Schulkind:

My daughter is named Linc. (But her namesake is a different Linc — from the Mod Squad.)
Avatar 8:29pm Holly in NC:

In top 5 best surf/exotica songs for sure... is Lil Danny still here to weigh in?
Avatar 8:29pm hyde:

Link Wray, not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is there any greater testament that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sucks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm listener james from westwood:

The artist COOP posted a masssssive dump of Link cuts on his blog when Wray passed. Amazing survey.
Avatar 8:32pm glenn:

apparently pigeons aren't the douchebags we think they are.
Avatar 8:33pm glenn:

on the beach is one of neil's top three. rust never sleeps and zuma being the other two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Mister Dobalina:

Gracias, Glenn! A+++
Avatar 8:34pm hyde:

@ljfw hmmm, missed that. I love the classic Link Wray, but I also love that Wray's Shack Three Track stuff like Beans and Fatback. Soooo good.
Avatar 8:34pm hyde:

@glenn man, I couldn't leave out Tonight's the Night, myself
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

Linc is so awesome on the Mod Squad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Well I didn't name my daughter Peggy Lipton!
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

For me, I think it's On the Beach, Tonight's the Night, and fuck it: Harvest
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

Peggy is so awesome on the Mod Squad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Doug Schulkind:

No disrespect to Ms. Lipton.
Avatar 8:38pm glenn:

okay, but if you have to have tonight's the night, then it has to be a top five, and everybody knows this is nowhere is included. [because a top four is just ridiculous].
Avatar 8:38pm Holly in NC:

I'll put in a vote for Live Rust. And also Tonight's the Night. And After the Gold Rush. And "Look Out for My Love" from Comes a Time, LOVE that song.
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

I mean, she does get left behind a lot. Seems like her job on most of the missions is to make a phone call and then get kidnapped
Avatar 8:38pm hyde:

@glenn i can live with that!
Avatar 8:39pm glenn:

except for heart of gold, harvest is a pretty good record.
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

My top 5: On the Beach, Tonight's the Night, Harvest, Neil Young, After the Goldrush. Special mention: Time Fades Away
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

I'll go to bat for that first solo album. "Here we are in the years" is AMAZING
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Doug Schulkind:

This is one of my top five favorite episodes of Explorers Room. Ever!
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

You say the sweetest things
Avatar 8:42pm Holly in NC:

I like Heart of Gold. I do. Sorry Glenn! In fact I love Harvest except for A Man Needs a Maid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Uncle Michael:

I have some Peggy Lipton in the HDT pipeline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly in NC
You say the Swedish things.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

I'm with you on Heart of Gold, Holly. Overplayed but still a joy. And I've come around on A Man Needs a Maid, just cause it's so grotesque
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Uncle Michael:

Jackie Wilson gets the Swedish feeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm listener james from westwood:

Charles Bradley & his backing band do nice things with "Heart of Gold."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm listener james from westwood:

Speaking of nice things, this Zepeda cut is transcendent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Uncle Michael:

Non-musical guilty pleasure: Fritz' Coffee Cola float.
Avatar 8:49pm Holly in NC:

@ljfw - in total agreement with both of your last 2 comments

@Doug - bork! bork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Björk Björk:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Uncle Michael:

Aqua Sansa was delicious.
Avatar 9:00pm hyde:

Ok, I'm goin' back to listen to the 80 minutes I missed! Thanks Flash Strap, also appreciate that Aqua Sansa link!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Uncle Michael:

Evan, your mic could be louder in the mix, relative to the set music. It's fine relative to the bed music during the mic breaks. I have to turn the volume up during the breaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm listener james from westwood:

Loved the show; thanks a ton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the cool stuff!
Avatar 9:00pm Holly in NC:

Thank you Flash!
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

Thanks all of you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm All of Us:

No, thank you, Mr. Strap!
Avatar 9:01am Brian in UK:

Hey Flash, the archive has not loaded yet, so I cannot listen yet. The Turtles on Battle of the Bands has a group called The Crossfires. No relation?
Avatar 9:30am Flash Strap:

Hey Brian, it'll be up today!
As for the Crossfires, I think you're right! Seems that the Turtles used to be a surf group called the Crossfires, and they included a reference to that on Battle of the Bands. But I would not have known that if not for you, so I thank you! Gotta give that album a listen.
