Oh man, I love Les Baxter. My favorite is Ritual of the Savage (despite the icky title) but this one is great too!

Hello, Gaylord! Checking in from my office at the newspaper's HQ. Surprise, it's snowing outside! I'm inside writing about food, and glad to be tuned in.

Nice avatar, Bronwyn. Unless you are a sea lion, then peace to you and yours.

@Wendy do Queijo: Write on!
Avatar 5:16pm

@Gaylord: My sportsy knowledge is nonexistent to the point where my friends and I refer to all sports as "sportsball". Maybe Bronwyn C. could teach me in the ways of sports.

@Jake: arf arf arf.

@Bronwyn: May your smelt always be… Whatever condition your smelt should be in to make you happy. What does this Jew-boy know from smelt?

P-90:

Greetings Gaylord and the Gaylordained. Off to an engaging start. As usual.
  5:24pm
JakeGould:

Gefilte smelt would need to be backed into the guts of a smelt. I know gefilte fish… I know fish and chips… I know tuna fish… I know all kinds of fish including Abe Vigoda. No clue about smelt other than sea lions eat it like it’s crack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
Gaylord Fields:

Thank you kindly, P-90!
  5:25pm
P-90:

Personally, never dug how gefilte smelt.
  5:26pm
JakeGould:

@glenn: Cod, whitefish or pike… That is gefilte fish. And it smells bad, but it’s my people’s food.
Avatar 5:27pm
glenn:

i do love smoked whitefish. yummy.
  5:28pm
P-90:

Met Abe V. once.. He smelt kinda nice, citrus with gentle tones of leather and musk. Yves San Laurent for men, I think.
  5:29pm
JakeGould:

I love smoked whitefish as well… But I grew up seeing those silvery eyes looking back at me from the appetizing deli case… Haunts me… That and beef tongue in the windows of butcher shops…
  5:29pm
JakeGould:

Abe Vigoda has a nice musk to him? Who knew.

And on topic: This is a lovely instrumental show so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm

@Bronwyn Well, Bronwyn, it's not all it's cut out to be, but it *is* London. For example, today, people were made to queue to get on the reduced train service out of Victoria. But I did see Calexico at a 150-people show at Rough Trade Records this week, so you take the rough with the smooth…

b.t.w., as a sort of continuation from todd's playlist yesterday, here's what clem cattini has to say about joe meek - "Joe may have been a genius with his strange noises and all that, but musically he was a moron. He was tone deaf, and we [the Tornados] never got the credit we deserved for the production". of Telstar."
Avatar 6:13pm

no. i'd love to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm

@glenn: Listening to those Joe Meek demos, Clem is on to something. The Tornadoes definitely gave a few sow's ears some heavy tailoring.

@Gaylord Thanks! My wife and I have started a new blog about marvellous people in showbusiness, and this week I've interviewed Emma Solal, who's currently doing a theatre show of Françoise Hardy songs in Paris, and also published an interview with Odile Gheysens, an aerial dancer who performs in the stunning video for the new Dominique A track Au Revoir Mon Amour.
