Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Hello, Gaylord! Checking in from my office at the newspaper's HQ. Surprise, it's snowing outside! I'm inside writing about food, and glad to be tuned in.
@Gaylord: My sportsy knowledge is nonexistent to the point where my friends and I refer to all sports as "sportsball". Maybe Bronwyn C. could teach me in the ways of sports.
Gefilte smelt would need to be backed into the guts of a smelt. I know gefilte fish… I know fish and chips… I know tuna fish… I know all kinds of fish including Abe Vigoda. No clue about smelt other than sea lions eat it like it’s crack.
I love smoked whitefish as well… But I grew up seeing those silvery eyes looking back at me from the appetizing deli case… Haunts me… That and beef tongue in the windows of butcher shops…
@Peanut Gallery: Thanks! This is where today's show just happens to be leading me. (If you quite sensibly presume it's the other way around, you'd be mistaken.)

sounding great in London - perfect Sunday night sounds x
@Bronwyn Well, Bronwyn, it's not all it's cut out to be, but it *is* London. For example, today, people were made to queue to get on the reduced train service out of Victoria. But I did see Calexico at a 150-people show at Rough Trade Records this week, so you take the rough with the smooth…
b.t.w., as a sort of continuation from todd's playlist yesterday, here's what clem cattini has to say about joe meek - "Joe may have been a genius with his strange noises and all that, but musically he was a moron. He was tone deaf, and we [the Tornados] never got the credit we deserved for the production". of Telstar."
- great song; prefer the stark acoustic version - but this is good & interesting...& of course a serious departure from most of Geddy Lee's vocals on Rush tracks ..., ..., ...
Does anyone object if I self-promote something I did in connection with an amazing Dominique A video? I loath show-offs but it may be interesting to people here…
@Gaylord Thanks! My wife and I have started a new blog about marvellous people in showbusiness, and this week I've interviewed Emma Solal, who's currently doing a theatre show of Françoise Hardy songs in Paris, and also published an interview with Odile Gheysens, an aerial dancer who performs in the stunning video for the new Dominique A track Au Revoir Mon Amour. It can all be found at thewidowstanton.com
Thanks Gaylord. I saw Dominique A playing with the wonderful Françoiz Breut at Dingwalls in London years ago but I've never seen him do his own show. May have to go to Paris in spring, especialy if Odile is performing.
