hey mr scott, just back from 5 weeks in Europe and decided to do a Thursday shift, and it's YOU. good news... would rather be back in the cold than here in the Sydney heat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05am
Scott McDowell:

That's the question heat vs. cold. You go with cold. I would go with hot Sydney over cold New Jersey right about now!

Sem Chumbo:

Morning, Scott! Good evening, ausmanx.

Hey everybody thanks for checking in. I'm hungry, and I don't mean metaphorically.

Good morning Scott and hello all.
Avatar 6:24am
doca:

Oi, @Sem! There's no sin South of the Equator, as the song says, but there's a lot of heat.
Avatar 6:30am
doca:

@Sem: Continuing the Portuguese language tips, you've probably translated "over there" as "lá", but actually you should say "aí". In Portuguese we have "aqui", "aí" and "lá", when English only have "here" and "there". "Aqui" means "here", something which is near to me; "aí" is something that is near to the person one is speaking to; and "lá" is something far from both, or just means "there". You can use "cá" to mean "aqui" too, and "ali" for something middle distance. Just blame it on those damn ancient Romans and their absurdly complex language.

Wow, I love Katherine Young's work.

I'm glad to help, @Sem
Avatar 6:52am
luca:

so if speaker and listener are very close to each other doca (say in bed), the meanings of "aqui" and "ai" sort of coincide? ;)

signed in locked in good to be here Scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58am
Scott McDowell:

welcome
Avatar 6:59am
doca:

@luca: Not exactly, but sometimes yes. The thing is that "aqui" and "cá" are meant to express things that are close, and "ali", "aí" and "lá" mean things that aren't that close or related to the person who's speaking.
Avatar 7:01am
doca:

@luca: It's not exactly spacial distance, but relation distance in the conversation (but that just makes the thing more difficult than it really is). You can think of "aí" as something "over there", "aqui" as "this thing over here". and "lá" as just "there, far away".

luca:

@doca: think i got it...thanks for explaining!

- the Quartet. Great.
Avatar 7:26am
doca:

Yeah middle-60's Coltrane, where the horns are firing up but the piano is still holding the melody
Avatar 7:28am
ausmanx:

saw Mr Brotzmann in London a couple of weeks back. subdued. i wonder if his health's holding up.
Avatar 7:30am
doca:

@ausmanx: Yeah his presence upstage is really intense for a 70-year old guy (it would be for a twentysomething too). Maybe he changes his blood every six months just like Keith Richards (or Lance Armstrong)
  7:31am
Dawid:

but the uncontrollable blasts where closer to B. I saw him too, all three nights in fact. he is fine just quiet and concentrated
Avatar 7:32am
