Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
common:

well put cecile!
  2:17pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: Decent idea. But the thing is all cities—if you follow zoning trends—are banning all kinds of “fun” nowadays in favor of cafes, casual retail and the housing around it. Case in point: Dancing and live performance is just outright banned in most placed unless they are a “venue.” And on a smaller scale, when was the last time you saw an arcade game or pinball game in a venue? Yeah, some places have ironic video games for “atmosphere” but in general, arcade games are treated as potential gambling devices… And if you run a successful business with some of those installed, very strong chance zoning nonsense and fines will be pulled on you. “Fun” is slowly being outlawed from group settings; enjoy your “Candy Crush Saga” on your phone, human.
Avatar 2:21pm
Cecile:

It's a little different out here, but I know what you are saying.
I'm just tired of cities putting all their arts bucks into institutions that do have robust fundraising efforts.
Avatar 2:21pm

Supenn from the Sawatdee restaurant chain here in Minneapolis used to always say she'd rather have a rock show at the Metrodome or near her than any football game. Music fans go explore the city, eat Thai food at her restaurants, and buy stuff. The sports fans, for the most part, go and leave with no other stops. Now, I know it's a little different for basketball and baseball because they are deeper into the city. The surrounding businesses are going great. But still.

Avatar 2:26pm
Cecile:

and Mike BS, too.
  2:26pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: Where are you? In NYC and other major U.S. cities what I see is just a retreat from arts. Sports and major venues are the only thing they care about. A lot of it comes from the fear that small venues simply attract a “bad element”. Nonsense in 2015. They don’t nurture anything but real estate in NYC nowadays. They bring the artists in at low rents to make places seem fun and safe, and then when they have made it safe? Kick them out to the curb and build glass towers or convert to condos. Really crass.
Avatar 2:28pm
Cecile:

I'm in Minneapolis. We are at a crossroads. We are building way too many condos now, but there are still neighborhoods that are fun and pretty safe. And they haven't kicked the artists out of the Northeast lofts yet because they are a huge part of our quality of life.
Avatar 2:29pm
Cecile:

the fact our neighborhood has a lot of single family and duplex housing has helped. Diversifies the ownership.

sm:

can you repeat the dates/times of the screening or where to find info?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
coe:

Ah so much talk I missed so much :(
  2:45pm
JakeGould:

@Cecile: I don’t disagree with your ideas, but the thing is with factories leaving the U.S. and the main economic motivator in most locales being real estate, the economic trend towards nonsense development is the main thing that pushes things through. Sad, but true.
  2:46pm
JakeGould:

@coe: The archives allow for time travel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
chris:

@JG, i think you're on to it, taxes: both sales and real estate > music/arts... except when folks move and buy *because* of the music/arts scene... that is often lost in the city planning meetings
Avatar 2:51pm
Cheri Pi:

Our city is planning around the arts, one of the big club owners is an urban planner.
  2:52pm
JakeGould:

@chris: Also, I mentioned arcade games for a very specific reason because in many locales music, arts and entertainment had some connections in the past to organized crime. So people still think—even if the law says otherwise—that someone opening up a pinball arcade and bar is opening the door to drugs and gang violence. In NYC pinball itself was only legalized in the 1970s as a “game of skill” and that was less than 50 years ago. So the fear that “fun” leads to “crime” still exists in many local boards mindsets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
coe:

@jakegould oh totally but I would have been able to jump in on your conversation with Cecile there especially being a guy from NJ with such strong ties to NYC and my opinion that with in the next 30 years the island will consist of nothing but "retail" and extreme high level real estate. Basically being the worlds largest mall.
  2:55pm
JakeGould:

@chris: Also, in NYC when you look at the history of who owns property and land in certain areas it’s clear that it is not a collective will creating real estate development: It’s typically one large entity. Like NYU and the Village. Here is NYU, a liberal arts college in the heart of a bohemian world capital and they see the real estate as more valuable than the culture that inspired a world on dozens of levels. Bleecker Street is a high-end food court now.
  2:56pm
JakeGould:

@coe: Been exploring NJ in dribs and drabs and it seems the only real estate they want there is glass towers and malls. True malls. If there was a real vision for the PATH connected areas you could have a true arts district there. But it’s odd and spotty at best now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm

@jakegould NJ has no interest even less then NYC in bringing anything of any cultural significance to the forefront. NYC at least postures.
  2:59pm
JakeGould:

@coe: Do you remember back in the 1980s when all of West 8th Street to Saint Marks and then to Tompkins Square Park was basically what Williamsburg used to be as well? West 8th Street near 6th Avenue was my first “hipster mall” hangout in JHS/HS back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
coe:

DK this one goes up there on the list of favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
coe:

Very much so. I was to young to be there but even I knew of it's repuation at teh tiem.
  3:01pm
JakeGould:

@coe: Whenever I visit Jersey City I feel like I could be—sorry to say this—in any town in the midwest with a “nice” downtown and that is it. It looks like it has potential and then you look at that whole financial district downtown and realize that could have been something more than just glass towers.
