No spoilers!

I can only really sing karaoke songs with a baritone. Like Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Hall & Oates stuff, Benjamin Orr’s songs with the Cars or Huey Lewis since that guy can’t sing.

JakeGould:

I hear that Don Draper woke up on from a nap in his cabin and suddenly realizes he’s really on the planet Solaris.

Nope, the whole “Mad Men” show was the creation of an autistic kid shaking a snow globe.

@Jake, autistic snow globe TV shows are so passé. I music prefer all TV shows to be the virtual-reality hallucinations of astronauts in suspended animation on their way to Mars.

@ Ike - The American version of that show was a huge rip-off of Philip K. Dick!
  12:15am

@Ike: Feh, you kids. I am still into my TV shows being about space truckers put into suspended animation in the middle of a what is basically a trucking gig. I mean that’s what Alien is about?

"On topic" is overrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am
pacific standard simon:

Unless you're buying.
  12:20am
JakeGould:

Okay, so here is an NYC topic I need to broach after something that happened this weekend: Is it ever acceptable anywhere for someone riding the subway, holding the pole with their hands to have some random tourist come on the train and not only lean but put their head on your hand? Yes, this has now happened to me 3 times and each time it was a tourist and they were baffled as to why I—and others—would not want their head on someone’s hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am
Ĩk∑:

To be fair @PSS, isn't half of all current sci-fi a rip-off of PKD?
  12:21am
JakeGould:

And it can be an “anywhere where people deal with humans on public transportation” topic.

@JakeGould - Are you certain you're not bragging?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am
pacific standard simon:

With a sinking feeling that I'll end up working in a piroshki shop while living in Chinatown.
  12:33am
JakeGould:

@PSS: Craigslist is weird. And not in the “Ooo! There are crazy people!” way. I have listed some items on Craigslist for months. Some even more than a year. Then all last week, people contacted me and finally bought the stuff. All in the last week. Is some planet in retrograde?
  12:33am
JakeGould:

Now I want piroshki. And fries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35am
Ĩkє:

Is there a really bad Chinatown in yr Pacific zone, @PSS? I'm near one of NYC's lesser-known Chinatowns (plus Mexico Town) and it's not a terrible area at all, as long as you're out of the noisiest section & not right on top of the illicit gambling dens and illicit sweatshops. Anyway, I'm also hunting jobs on CL, so I feel half of yr pain.
  12:37am
JakeGould:

@Ike: There’s tons of non-illicit gambling in Sunset Park’s Chinatown. Ever see those shops—tons of them—that just basically have big light up boards that look like bingo numbers? HINT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am
pacific standard simon:

I dunno. My experiences with 'real life' have been pretty weird too. If RRN63 were here he could tell you about the retrograde.

@Ĩkє - Seattle Chinatown.
  12:38am
JakeGould:

@PSS: Not too sure about the Pacific Northwest, but using the StreetEasy app in NYC was a godsend for my last apartment hunt. Might only be in NYC but see if there is a variant of the concept near you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am
Ĩk∑:

@Jake, I was basically joking about the gambling, but now I'm going to look for those big light-up boards. And @PSS, is Seatlle Chinatown that bad then? Surely there are worse parts of Seattle?
  12:42am
JakeGould:

@Ike: Like any place in your hood that has lotto happening, just peek in and look around. There are genuinely lots of these Chinese lottery places. Also, around 64th Street there are some Korean nightclubs and even a hotel that has karaoke that are quite shady in a way… You just have to see and look…

Avatar 12:43am
BadGuyZero:

Does Seattle's International District still have a karaoke place that stays open until 6am during the weekend?
  12:44am
JakeGould:

And there is nothing wrong with Korean karaoke places… But in deep Brooklyn those and Russian nightclubs are completely legit businesses that should never be questioned by anyone anyhow anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47am
pacific standard simon:

@Ĩk∑ - Pretty damn trashy compared to most of the rest of the city.

@JakeGould - It seems that StreetEasy is actually based in Seattle, but I'm having trouble finding a link to something that actually works in Seattle.

@BadGuyZero - I know nothing. NOTHING!
  12:51am
JakeGould:

@PSS: “I know nothing. NOTHING!” Phew, glad you said that.

Alice Cooper always reminds me of the pizza place around the corner from me when I was growing up in Brooklyn. They had a jukebox with the “Elected” single cover in it.

JakeGould:

@Tome: Carrol Gardens, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill don’t dumpster dive. They just put stuff out with signs that read “FREE!” on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
Tome:

it's all South Brooklyn baby ,,pre Gowanus Exp. & Red Hook houses it was anyway , anywhere below Atlantic ave, ,, I believe it was because Brooklyn originally as a borough was only considered Downtown area an below ,, rest was kinda "long Island" ,, many who live in East Queens still say they're in Long Island ,, ie East NY,, the eastern neighborhood of Brooklyn one time ,, and NY city too ...
  1:27am
JakeGould:

@Tome: I am not too sure what you mean there. I know what South Brooklyn is. But I don’t get the context of the conversation. If you ever look at a map of Brooklyn from ye olden times and compare it to now, basically “Brownstone Brooklyn” is what was once considered real Brooklyn. And the rest of the borough was just farmland in some way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am
Tome:

yes but as far a greater NY city was concerned one time I think only downtown brooklyn and South Brooklyn ,, down to red Hook was considered part of greater NY city I must do more investigation , look at those maps in the Public Library ..
Avatar 1:31am
egal:

Might be the worst LZ song.
  1:31am

@Tome: Pretty much yeah. It’s fascinating to think that other parts of Brooklyn are still considered “hick” parts of Brooklyn decades later.

JakeGould:

I’m not too sure about the Led Zep song either, but respect WFMU for playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am
Tome:

--- here is what I saw on Wiki anyway ** South Brooklyn is an "obsolete and imprecise"[1] historic term for a section of the City of Brooklyn – now the New York City borough of Brooklyn – encompassing what are now the Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook neighborhoods.[1][2][3] It was named for its location, south of the original Village of Brooklyn. It should not be confused with the geographic southern region of the modern borough of Brooklyn, which includes the neighborhoods of Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, Gerritsen Beach, Seagate, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Manhattan Beach. < ** now back to the music :) ,, one Zep album I liked anyway ,,
Avatar 1:34am
BadGuyZero:

It's better than "D'yer Maker" or "Fool In The Rain."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am
Tome:

.. obsolete village ahh that kind of sums it up ...
  1:36am
JakeGould:

@Tome: Sad thing is that mentality of what Brooklyn once was affects the rest of the borough. Everything in Brownstone Brooklyn gets preserved. Here in Bay Ridge the 90 year old Irish bar around the corner from me closed and is now gutted to become a medical office or something. Progress!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am
Tome:

kind of liked the way Zep was going with "in through the out door.."but I think if it would have continued ,, they could have been too poppy ie,,, like Genesis *Duke* ,, but maybe not .. who knows ,,
