@phat: I have a few D&B records, which I haven't played in more than 15 years.

LOVE that chugga-chugga Rickenbacker rthym thing that John used to do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: John's rhythm guitar on IWTHYH is so pleasing to me, too.
Avatar 5:17pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I even suggest the chugging sound they get on 'Hold Me Tight' from then is Proto-Metallic...
  5:18pm
P-90:

Maybe John's wildest part in that style is the Latin-flavored version on "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You."
Avatar 5:19pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like John saying that if George is the 'invisible' (under-credited) voice - then John himself was the 'invisible' guitarist...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Gaylord Fields:

After hearing so much of John's guitar isolated, my appreciation of him as a musician has grown.
  5:23pm
P-90:

@RRN63: years ago i went back and realized that the "early" (Cavern/Hamburg/methamphetamine) Fabs did basically "two rhythm guitar + lead bass" arrangements.
Avatar 5:23pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...when very young - thot early Beatles distinct for being before Pop & Rock separated- which may be true somewhat - but now recognize they were a unique Fusion music of their own @ the time for playing Pop & other things as well as Guitar-Bass-Drums-Vocals unit - w/ a large nod to Buddy...
Avatar 5:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Sir Macca's agility to play Bass in the Rhythm section & also so melodically - & then sing something else brilliantly - & makes it look simple: he's an odd bird in leaving people to figure where they should credit him for themselves, & then making a point about getting credit for odd things...
- Infinite Beatle-geekout chatter is possible...

@Gaylord: Apropos to nothing but 60s pop, just scored this annotated cover of Abbey Road with convenient labels to remind me which Beatle is which for one whole dollar.

@doca: How does it work in the Southern Hemisphere?

@dale: Why, yes, that would be next week. Debbie D joins me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Uncle Michael:

I didn't recognize the Roger Nichols record. That was delightful. Pre or post Paul Williams partnership?
  6:09pm
JakeGould:

I am a Gemini. So what kind of deal do you have with us Geminis, pal?
  6:10pm
doca:

Surprisingly it works in the same way as in the Northern one, even though we don't have the same constellations. The fact that the ancient Babylonians didn't know there was a Souther Hemisphere with a different sky doens't seem to affect astrology's accuracy (irony intended).

I'm bi-cuspid; sometimes I'm a Capricorn, othertimes I'm an Aquarius, mostly I'm astrologically confused.

I wish I could go down to the corner, get my weight and learn my destiny for 25 cents. Instead I can just go to the bathroom scale, then load a free app on my $99-$299 iPhone and panic and do Google searches for the next hour. WHAT A COUNTRY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: That was when his writing partner was Tony "Pet Sounds" Asher.
  6:14pm

@Jack: It’s “Pride Weekend” so you should wear your bi-cuspid status and be proud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm

@JakeGould: I dedicated a song to you! Gah, you're such a two-face!
  6:17pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm

Okay, thank you… From both of my faces as a listener to your one face as a DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm sad that Brian Wilson didn't think Johnny Rivers sang from the heart.
Avatar 6:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good Lord - Beatles & Astrology. Fortunately, I know better than to start down roads too long to get home from before dark...It is neat-o though that Brian Wilson is basically born on Summer Solstice, & two days after Sir Macca.
  6:28pm
golde:

Nice, just saw touch of evil on the big screen in berlin a couple days ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: If someone has a negative opinion about Johnny Rivers' singing, it is an incorrect one. All logic tables lead to that conclusion.
  6:28pm
JakeGould:

RR63: If you ever need help knowing which Beatle is which, I have an LP cover that can help you.
  6:28pm
JakeGould:

@golde: Seems like the best way to see that film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Uncle Michael:

Was it the restoration, golde?

Gaylord, I doubt Brian really thought that. It's just an offhand comment he throws at Murry during the "Help Me Rhonda" battle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Gaylord Fields:

@golde: You are a fortunate person. I call it the Citizen Kane of B movies.

Similar to you, I was fortunate enough to see Sweet Smell of Success on the big screen in London.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: Oh, like his "I've got one good ear" burn on Murry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Uncle Michael:

The splendor of A Touch of Evil transcends casting Heston as a Mexican and the latex nose Orson wears.

Yes, when Murry is explaining that the Beach Boys will never have another hit if they don't sing from the heart, Brian asks "oh, like Johnny Rivers?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Gaylord Fields:

I love that Welles' character, Quinlan, has no compunction whatsoever about framing a guilty man.
  6:37pm
P-90:

"He was some kind of a man. What does it matter what you say about people?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Uncle Michael:

Even if I didn't like Johnny Rivers, he'd get a free pass for the 5th Dimension.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Uncle Michael:

And for hiring Jimmy Webb to write the Up, Up and Away album...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
dale:

charleton heston as a mexican was inspired casting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Uncle Michael:

Inspired by what, a codeine binge?
  6:39pm
P-90:

Odd that Brian W. took that little swipe at Johnny Rivers. Or not, oddness being a thing of his.
I wonder if he recanted it later...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
dale:

d'oh - uncle todd done said it first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Uncle Michael:

It was a minor swipe...a mere throwaway. It just stuck in my memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
dale:

i have a version of wanderlove somewhere - is it a francoise hardy album maybe? has the tablas in it which makes it all that more psychedelicisized.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Uncle Joe Grande:

I'm thinking of a name change.
  6:43pm
P-90:

Stick with "Pufnstuf Dude."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
Uncle Pufnstuf Dude:

Ok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Gaylord Fields:

Johnny Rivers last sixties LPs "Changes," "Rewind" and "Realization" are as good a series as one can find.
  6:45pm

Ahh! Han’s Island… That line John Savage has about “appetite for women” and then we learn all those chicks are his daughters. Classic burn!

I saw TOE at Arsenal theatre in Berlin. I am certain the quality of this version could not have been trumped. I could see every detail, while seated in the second row!
  6:49pm
JakeGould:

@P-90: Yeah, John Saxon… Sorry… John Savage is the one yuppie gentrifying Bed-Stuy in “Do the Right Thing.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Golde: Also, the later cut you certainly saw restores Welles' vision for the looooong tracking shot of an opening scene (no credits; all music diegetic).
Avatar 6:50pm
KennyV:

“Came here for the air conditioning, stayed for the film.” Basically what my dad did back in the 1970s/1980s on hot NYC summer days.

The restored "Touch" is the ONLY "Touch" IMHO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm

great song. all one ever hears is needles and pins.
  6:59pm
Golde:

Restoration of one's vision is key. I have decidedly avoided all Orson Welles related films... except for my favorite reading of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” something my father, an art history professor, showed me in childhood many times. My question is when is the right time to see CK?
