Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: To paraphrase Morrissey, the pleasure and the privilege is mine (and I don't need the threat of vehicular homicide as a catalyst to say it).
Recently had a rootbeer that is actually an ale (nortmal 5+% abv) w/ all the rootbeer flavor spices: tastes like a good rather sweet rootbeer, & not @ all like an ale...
I'm reading The Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars right now, and it's pretty depressing -- an endless litany of drug abuse. If it's not an outright overdose, then it's a body or mind destroyed by constant overuse.
Psychedelics are incredibly powerful, psychologically, but not addictive ;
- & as for the others - which is most of them
- addiction is not cool or glamorous - it's just addiction. Overdose is a bit final. People kick & lose their tolerance, & then dabble & overdose. The only sensible thing to say is: Learn & Beware. PSA of the day. Listen to yer grandads...
@pacific standard simon: It's facile to make a direct correlation between the artistic temperament and self-destructive tendencies, but it's a topic that can't be ignored.
I see that Virgil's has a full line of flavors; my local market only carries the root beer. Good news, they ship 12 and 24 packs in the continental US. I'll have to remember about the moderation, though, or my belly will become unsightly.
...pub informs that the rootbeer-flavored ale is 'Not Your Father's RootBeer': seriously, it tastes like good rb (if pretty sweet) & you can't tell it's ale @ all...
...green-tea ice cream ('Mochi'?)...
So glad if Brian Wilson story is handled well. That would kinda make it the odd music biodrama! I get the impression they have to convey his genius & make that point...The fb Beach Boy groups I'm in approve - whereas the Hendrix groups revile 'All Is By My Side' whilst crediting Andre's effort...
Virgil's parent company, Reed's (the ginger beer people), also make something called Flying Cauldron Butterscotch Beer (non-alcoholic). I'd be skeptical of that one, but they claim it goes well with vanilla ice cream.
