Man--glad I'm missing the heat wave up there

@Ike: Went to Ba Xuyên today for Bahn Mi. Definitely a better local choice than Thanh Da, but still not as good as Hanco’s in Boerum Hill or Lotus in Park Slope.

hi Dave. regarding Brooklyn, aren't we the second biggest city in the US after LA? thats a lotta room.
  10:27pm
JakeGould:

@steve: Counting non-hipster/non-brownstone Brooklyn, yes.
Avatar 10:27pm
Dave Mandl:

@steve: There's still a lot of open space at Floyd Bennett Field.

dave, I want to thank you for the great tunes tonight!

Interesting. Of course - I'm not sure anyone knows where LA begins or ends...
  10:29pm
JakeGould:

I miss when Floyd Bennett Field still had some weird, still active in a minor way connection to the Coast Guard and National Guard. Was fun to sneak around old hangars there back in the 1980s.
Avatar 10:30pm
Dave Mandl:

@Jake: It's still a really odd place. Everything from a Sanitation Department training center to campgrounds.

The City of Los Angeles is one thing, but a lot of people regard Los Angeles as everything in Los Angeles County.

?:

Good evening Dave, loving the Gurdjieff!
  10:33pm
JakeGould:

@Dave: One time in the 1980s I snuck into a hangar area with a wrecked Coast Guard plane and—this is the creepy part—the hangar was filled to the brim with vintage, seemingly untouched 1970s cars. All covered with a layer of thick dust. Apparently they were used in weapons tests or something like that? Anyway, we got chased off the property by a guard who came out of a trailer dressed in a bathrobe with a baseball bat. Unless I am blocking he had a gun, but it was definitely a bathrobe. Bizarre place and bizarre to think someone had a job like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

well dave I have to take my leave now, it's been fun hanging out for a short time tonight, I hope to see you next week! night
  10:38pm
JakeGould:

@DaveMandl: Yup. That kind of place. Creepy and they store “things” there but not enough to be aggressive. Like you were taking pictures, and the followed you but they didn’t arrest you but they still followed you.

Lotus in Park Slope is that good, eh @Jake@10:21? I've walked past it many times. I'll have to try it sometime. Of the ones I've tried, Ba Xuyên is 2nd only to the place at 369 Broome in Manhattan.
  10:42pm
JakeGould:

@Ike: There is a Bahn Mi truck that goes around Manhattan that is quite good as well. Shows up around Varick and Hudson Street.

Oh, and then there was the time at Floyd Bennett Field me and some friends were driving around when it was dark just to horse around and then two extremely hobo-looking guys seem to show up out of nowhere in our headlights. Very David Lynch-ian. They asked for a ride to some nearby shelter and we agreed. The guys smelled like death but were hopped up on goofballs or something because they were so twitchy we thought at any moment they’d pull out blades on us. Happily they were just smelly and mentally ill and we drove them to the shelter and that was that.

I listened to Don Joyce's final Over The Edge program last night. It was sad, knowing what he didn't know. Apparently, the show is going to continue without him. Hard to imagine it without his voice but, then, they DO have tapes.

The pronunciation I find for Icelandic "Sóley" sounds sorta like "so-lay", and seems to translate to "flower" or "sunflower", which seems like an unlikely coincidence, given the meaning of the French "soleil". Loan word, maybe?
