This is the new format of the program now that Joe Franklin is gone.
9:18am
Brendan:
Mondays no trouble at all Joe. I'd get out of a bed full of supermodels at 4 am for this show. Just to turn up the surface noise, then get back in . Those dames never have anything to say but man they're warm.
It's true. I do like music from the late 1920s & early 1930s, but I hardly ever tune in to Rich Conaty (whom I met at a party almost 35 yrs. ago) any more because WFMU's had such great offerings on Sun. night (incl. Dave Mandl, whom I knew via other company). And if I didn't listen to WFMU at that time, it'd be John Bachelor & his interviews of authors on historic issues. It's a very competitive night for att'n.
9:36am
Claw!:
I like when you start off with the 20s and 30s stuff, Joe. :)
ISTR they were doing pole-sitting (& billboard-sitting or other close approxim'ns) again in the 1990s, as a protest or something So it's already had its 2nd fad.
9:48am
P-90:
Another strong up-vote for the "Joe Franklin/Rich Conaty" style opening sets. Stick with 'em!
@Kurt: I bet that if one started referring to Carpenters without 'the' it would really confuse people. I never noticed it either but I'm going to start spreading the word.
College pals of mine called their intramural basketball team "Eraserhead" (the movie was newly out at the time). The league managers listed them in all the schedules, etc., as "The Eraserheads". They weren't happy.
I would tend to automatically supply "The" as well, because otherwise they'd sound generic. "By Talking Heads" makes it sound like a description rather than a name attribution. I guess that's what they were after....
Where I would NOT apply "The" would be where it's obvious word play was intended, like Miss Vickie's "People Like Us", so you can say it's "by people like us". (Sorry, I can't help supplying the "Miss" before her name either, just as a little jokey allusion.)
Oddly, the "The" has the reverse effect of making that sound like a description rather than a title, "the Ohio state university". See, I don't even put it in caps with that "the" prefacing it, because it doesn't read like a name.
Frankly I was shocked to learn there's no 'the' with Go-Go's. All these years wrong.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
...we are not thee representative Talking Heads (meaning a TV commentator who only shows his head & talks) - nor even specific Talking Heads, in fact: we are Art School people named for the Idea of Talking Heads, & reflecting on it...
When Kevin Ayers (currently on loop behind Joe's voice) was in Soft Machine they were "The Soft Machine". When he left, they dropped the "The". I believe Pink Floyd dropped their "The" around the same time...
All this is reminding me of a great bit of dialog from Doug Adams's "Hitchhiker" series. The larger-than-life Zaphod Beeblebrox has just identified himself to a receptionist. Astonished, she says "THE Zaphod Beeblebrox??" "No," he drawls, "just A Zaphod Beeblebrox. Didn't you know I come in six packs?"

Hooray, the 91.1 signal is back, no more listening to Carl Banks talk about last night's football game!
11:13am
KP:
Kenny Aaronson was also in dust. Awesome bass player and the first on Dylan's never ending tour
...Alice is OK - & the Stooges, Arthur Lee & Love, Bunnymen, Mazzy Star, Jesus & Mary Chain - everybody around them & wouldn't be the same w/out them - but not them...
,,,& we're judging Rawk Stars by how much quality time we'd've liked to spend w/ them? Good Luck w/ that...
Joe, the odd thing is as I mentioned last week, been reading Becoming Elektra so there has been some Doors action in the book. They did set up Elektra with their first No.1.
Lonnie Mack plays bass on Morrison Hotel, you can hear it.
If you were a pre-teen or a young teen white male during 1967-70, what the Doors mean to you makes whether or not you "like" them kind of irrelevant. It's kind of like asking a white, middle class woman who was 14 or 15 when Tapestry came out whether or not she "likes" it.
As for the doors, commercial rock radio rarely played them until the start of the late 70s. Then they were bran' new until about the middle of the 80s when it got ridiculous.
Oh my god, whats that really terrible Manzarek song post doors

Dean:
Morrison reminds me of Glen Danzig, or vice versa. At a street fair yesterday I heard a band of young teens struggling with a cover of Danzig's "Mother." Shoot, they should have tried "Riders on the Storm."
They were egalitarian in as much as all publishing and writing credits were split down the middle. Helps keep a band together like U2 whether you like them or not.
The Feelies know how much I hate The Doors and have been known to dedicate this to me when they perform it as a result. I must admit it is one of The Doors' least intolerable songs.
11:37am
Jack:
Also remember: wherever it's raining, some DJ is playing "Riders on the Storm".
Tom Scharpling had a great rant about Jim Morrison - basically he was going on about what horrible product endorsements and TV ads he would be doing now if he were still alive
I think he liked Jim's ambition and the jazz feel to a lot of their songs. He also likes interesting messes, which is so much of what the Doors represent.
the doors had many brilliant moments, despite morrison being an asshole! i'm not sure i could endure an acdc set of any longer duration than that doors set.
Onward. Pretty interesting story behind "First Time Ever", via Wikipedia. Worth checking just for the list of people who've done it. en.wikipedia.org...

I think AC/CD are pretty great - but not a lot variation there...
It's kind of revealing. You see Bon quite unhappy, and Angus subtly squeezing him out of the band. From what I've read, he was considering moving on. before he passed.
Love the show. My mess of a band Kreamy 'Lectric santa's 2nd Brooklyn show in 15+ yrz tonight @ Alphaville https://m.facebook.com/events/411874162351474?id=411874162351474&refsrc=https%3A%2F%2Fm.facebook.com%2Fprofile.php&_rdr. Check out our awkwardly inconsistent vibe. If so inclined "everything" is radio freon dish . Thanx a heap-Robert price
