I teach the tods too- and I feel the same way! My co-teacher often says to them: 'thats not a REAL song -can you sing a REAL song'. But I disagree and I try to encourage them

I am generalizing but girls are more encouraged to consume pop/music than produce it

Free Cake for Every Creature ... how can you not love that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
common:

almost every band i've been in has been with male and female members, straight and gay. i don't think about that much, but it is important and it's nice not to think about gender at all in art. for me.

I completely agree with this discussion too!
I have worked with 0-14 yr old kids for 15 years. The loss of children's creativity is widespread and in my experience is often actively encouraged by adults around them. very inspiring to hear you talk about this :0>

i make most of my living as an artist-designer and i still think the best work i ever did was as a preteen. hands down, i'd take stuff like kid katie over 95%+ regimented, genre-fied bands.

chris in london:

having my artwork given scores out of 10 by a teacher helped put me off drawing for over 10 years! how awful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of course of course - Picasso said it took him a lifetime to learn to paint like a child
- & John Lennon's Auntie who raised him infamously told him 'a guitar's alright but you'll never make a living w/ it' - & threw out some of his early/childhood writings & drawings, which he said he'd never forgive her for. Lennon said this is what happens to kids in school: they tell this one he's an Artist, & that other one becomes the TruckDriver - but all kids instinctively like the crayons...

This the first Magnetic Fields song I heard and one of my favorites. Makes me happy to hear it.

i gotta run but this has been great. all the things you've been discussing about creativity and age and gender are so important and are not brought up nearly enough.

Hate to chime in late to the party as I was drivin', but definitely agree with the message and digging the vibes going round. Personally I think there's a lot of people obsessed with these ass backwards outdated views of how life "should" be lived and what something is really "worth".

Doesn't also help that there's also the depraved obsession with greed and wealth among some people. Oh you better seek something that will get you a job so you can make x amount and be able to do this laundry list of things that'll apparently make you "happy" and "well lived".

Break the cycle, encourage anybody and just go out and get stuff done regardless of anything.
