When I was a kid my mom would listen to this kind of music - - we called it her "nerve music"

The first of several songs we'll hear today, I imagine, for which the Beautiful Music treatment was unnecessary.
  5:21pm
JakeGould:

@steve: This is the stuff that pre-dated adult contemporary and then was superseded by smooth jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
efd:

@steve, when I was younger I knew it as Beautiful Music and it was usually on FM stations. In Boston WJIB was the primary station; in the NYC area I think it was WPAT, but I'm sure Gaylord could confirm/correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Gaylord Fields:

@efd: Yes, some of these songs were shorter journeys than others.
Avatar 5:24pm

i got a great 101 Strings LP a year or two ago at Scott W's stoop sale, largely because i saw it had a cover of Macho's "I'm a Man".

  5:38pm
Listener Robert:

Steve, it was heard on both some AM & FM stations. As to where radios might be tuned to "easy listening" or "beautiful music", that might've been barber shops, waiting rooms & elevators, self service retail areas, etc. that didn't want to pay for Muzak or similar programming distributed by FM subcarriers.

WVOX's FM affiliate WRTN had many hrs. of it too.

However, during those hrs. on WRTN, it was automated & so wouldn't've had weather anmts. I think some automated stations experimented with automated weather anmts, though.

  5:47pm

Actually Muzak eventually got to have some pretty sophisticated music on several channels, with commissioned recordings. Yes, they actually became a recording label, although I don't know if there was any public distribution of pieces, other than via piracy.
  5:47pm

"Nerve music" is the perfect name though we *mistakenly* called it Muzak too.

Lovin' the Easy, Gaylord.. Of course back in my early adolescence, I was a desperately captive audience to my parent's newly purchased Motorola color tv/am/fm stereo console. I just moved, which means I had to drag my record collection along, which I haven't touched in years. And for whatever reason, I rarely listen to FMU anymore. But while I was taking the records out of boxes and putting them back on shelves in my new place, Gaylord was basically playing the soundtrack of my collection. I mean, what are the chances? You file a Lenny Dee album on the shelf, and 30 minutes later, there's Lenny's version of "Wichita Lineman" playing on the radio. Thanks, Gaylord, for reminding me that there are magic moments that can only be achieved via WFMU.
