This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Dr. John!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Hey Bob!

Last chance to help Explorers Room hit that goal! Let's crunch to the finish line together!

Avatar 7:01pm Walking Daydream:

Hello Hello.
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Hi Gary!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Hi Daydream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Carmichael:

Alright! I'm in the right place AND at the right time!
Avatar 7:01pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hello. Looking farward to this one. Big fan of the night tripper and also my first time listening live!
Avatar 7:01pm Walking Daydream:

Nice to see that book is finally out.
Avatar 7:02pm hyde:

I had to stop watching The Paul Lynde Halloween Special right in the middle of a Kiss song to come over here so, y'know, this better be good!
Avatar 7:03pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@hyde: haha
Avatar 7:03pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Well its of to a good start!
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Hello Carmichael! Warm welcome Sadhu! I'll do my best to top Lynde, Hyde! Can it be done? is Dr. John a match for one of theguys from Kiss?
Avatar 7:04pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Dr John sure nailed the makeup a long time before kiss thou.
Avatar 7:05pm Little Danny:

Really looking forward to your take on Dr. John, Evan.
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Oh, and thanks WD. Me too! Time to disseminate!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Hey hey LD!
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

Dr John also has to top Margaret Hamilton, Tim Conway, Betty White, Donnie and Marie, Pinky Tuscadero *and* Billy Barty. But I have faith in him (and you).
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for your donations, Jason and Richard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Carmichael:

I saw Dr. John on SCTV, performing at Jonny La Rue's Polynesian joint. "But I ain't wearin' no grass skoit!"
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

That musta been amazing Carm!
Avatar 7:07pm Sadhu Sadhu:

What always struck me about Dr John, was how he pretty much is the only one who pulled that new orleans/voodoo thing to the max. One would expect there was atleast 10 or 20 other groups out there that would do something similar and pull it of pretty well, but i really havent found any good contestors.
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

@Carmichael whoa, I don't remember that
Avatar 7:08pm ndbob:

I remember hearing this for the first time - my friend bought the LP - and we really didn't know anything about Dr. John
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

I agree Sadhu, although there is Prof. Longhair and Screamin' Jay, to an extent
Avatar 7:10pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Yea, this must be one of my all time favourite opening tracks. Sucks you in from the get go.
Avatar 7:10pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash. Yea, Longhair is great, but there isnt that much voodoo spookiness going on in his stuff.
  7:11pm Dean:

Curious George theme song? Maybe not right for this show?
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean? We're all curious here
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

I mean Hi Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm melinda:

hi all!
Avatar 7:13pm Sadhu Sadhu:

I love this album so much. Havent listened to it for a while. Nice to hear it again!
Avatar 7:13pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hello melinda
  7:13pm Dean:

Don't say I didn't warn you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MN7JzGC-yw4
Avatar 7:16pm ndbob:

hi melinda!
Avatar 7:16pm ndbob:

I think it was during the sessions for Inner Views
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Carmichael:

Ya Strap, he sang Such A Night and Iko Iko.
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!

@Carm: I love such a night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Yo yo yo, Sir Flash!
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

Dig Dag Dug, Sir Doug. My how your face brightens up these parts
Avatar 7:25pm Little Danny:

Fun fact and side note: in L.A. Rebennack was also involved in one of the greatest pop records of them all, the Cake's "Baby That's Me." It's a girl group side that shares little with the New Orleans/voodoo thing, but it is nonetheless swirling and psychedelic in its own way. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:25pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Such a night is great. One of my favourite, often overlooked Dr John tracks would be Life from In the right place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Carmichael:

Here you go. no performance, but a great ending to Polynesiantown:: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Oh yeah. Life is choice. Almost was gonna play it tonight, but decided to stay hard with night trippin'

That's a Toussaint song right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Dr. John really puts the ZOT in exotica!

Hey there, Diminutive Daniel!
Avatar 7:26pm hyde:

@Little Danny oh, i love that record
Avatar 7:27pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@little danny: Yea, thats a great little track!
Avatar 7:27pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: Yea, im pretty sure Toussaint wrote it.
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

Can't wait to check that track out Danny!

Got yours cued up for after, too, Carmichael!
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

belated hello, Hyde! Hello friendo!
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

This track is one of my tops right here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Carmichael:

Yep, Toussaint wrote Life. I was gonna go home, but guess I'll stay a minute longer ... :)
Avatar 7:29pm hyde:

while we're posting youtube tracks, here's another one for later: Aquarium Drunkard linked today to a video of Pharoah Sanders playing in an abandoned tunnel with a harmonium player (it's kind of amazing) www.aquariumdrunkard.com...
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

whoa. i wanna see that video NOW. hate to wait
Avatar 7:30pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: Yea, thats a good one. Saw it a while back. Defenitely worth checking out.
Avatar 7:31pm Sadhu Sadhu:

BABYLON! Thats another MIGHTY opener!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The chorus sounds like they're going "Let's do the time warp again!"
Avatar 7:32pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Ken Hahaha
Avatar 7:32pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ken: you are shockingly on point there
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

this whole album is so weird and off-putting. classic grower
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

construction WOIKERS

Avatar 7:34pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Haha. Its a fantastic track!
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

from the foreword of Confederacy of Dunces: "There is a New Orleans city accent . . . associated with downtown New Orleans, particularly with the German and Irish Third Ward, that is hard to distinguish from the accent of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Astoria, Long Island, where the Al Smith inflection, extinct in Manhattan, has taken refuge. The reason, as you might expect, is that the same stocks that brought the accent to Manhattan imposed it on New Orleans."
Avatar 7:37pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: Damn. I planned on reading CoD when i was down in NOLA this summer, but i never got around to aquire the book :/
Avatar 7:39pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: So im guessing you wont be playing anything from Televison tonight. :)
Avatar 7:40pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

I've actually never read the whole book, but I always think of that foreword when I hear the good doctor. I also intend to read it in this 365
Avatar 7:40pm ndbob:

Yep Danny that Cake 45 is great
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Wow, I've never heard that one!
Avatar 7:41pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Avatar 7:41pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Its pretty bad. :/ But i find the cover quite entertaining at least
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

It's hilarious, in fact. Reminds me of "New Sensations" and that whole 80's style of mid-career LP covers
Avatar 7:43pm hyde:

Confederacy of Dunces is worth the read, I think. and Sadhu that cover for Television is.....something
Avatar 7:44pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Avatar 7:46pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@hyde: I will defenitely read it at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Seconding Confederacy of Dunces ... and bowing out to go see my friends
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Take a bow Gary, and know you're already missed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Gentleladies and men, NOW is the time to come to the aid of your deejay, your radio/stream, your WFMU. The station needs your contributions and generosity in a big way.

If you have already pledged. THANK YOU! Now I ask that you consider adding a cherry to the sundae and top off that sucker. Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Gary:

Will be back for the archives!
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

Doug preaches the righteous path! Keep the Ark of Sound afloat and sleep the sleep of the Right-On
Avatar 7:59pm Sadhu Sadhu:

What would you guys say is the meanes sounding Dr John gets? For me, there is something about his take on How Come My Dog Don't Bark (When You Come 'Round). That last verse is pretty intense... I guess its got to to with the contrast in the lyrics and the backing track or something...
Avatar 7:59pm burke:

Hello Strap! I saw Mac at Chicago Blues fest two years ago and he thanked his "poysonable assistant."
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

The angels fly at your sides with swords of vision and shields of sound
Avatar 8:00pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - catch the rest on the archive!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

Hi Burke! God I love that man's accent
Avatar 8:00pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Now THIS track ive never really liked that much...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for giving WFMU a kick in its GIANT BOTTOM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm listener james from westwood:

In a bit late but happy now that I'm here! Will catch the first part of this deep Doc dive via the archive!
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hi James!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

@Sadhu: i love this one for its political grotesquerie, even though it's a rough listen in a lot of ways. It's bitter as fuck and poisonous
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

god damn THIS SONG
Avatar 8:04pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: True. I just really dont like the children choir. But yea, its pretty hard core. Thats for sure.
Avatar 8:05pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Oh. contemperery Dr. John
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

I mean, misguided and ambitious are pretty common bedfellows, it's usually worth it to watch them get it on
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Not a fan, I take it?
Avatar 8:07pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Its a solid album. I just wish that black keys dude left his finger marks all ower it. :)
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

I agree, to a certain extent. I don't love Auerbach, and wish he toned down some stuff, but he still got together the most Night Trippin record since the original days. And Dr. John brings his most bloodsoaked street fightin' lyrics
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

still, it's too in the pocket, groove oriented. Gris Gris sounds like it's gonna fall apart, and that's its strength. how could he not get that? But then again, what did Dr. John want out of this particular collab? I don't know
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

It's better than the other Night Tripper resurrection, 1998's Anutha Zone, with Jay Spaceman and Portishead, etc.
Avatar 8:14pm Sadhu Sadhu:

its a bit like Anutha Zone, where he was working with Jason Pierce and Supergrass, wich also is a pretty good album, but im guessing its to reach out to new crowds.
Avatar 8:14pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hahaha. I was just writing about that....
Avatar 8:16pm Sadhu Sadhu:

But yea, Lock Down is absolutely a good records and i woudnt want to be without it. Its just those little Auerbach things that keeps me thinking about The Black Keys wich buggs me.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

Ha, I scooped ya! Yeah, I agree
  8:16pm Doug Schulkind:

I am enjoying the fuck out of this show. It's like a documentary, except there's no pompous talking-head blather from Bono!
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

Well, I have one Anutha Zone track tonight, and then rest is vintage swamp gas
Avatar 8:17pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

Thank you Doug, I would hate to be the Bono in this situation. Kill me if I am ever the Bono
Avatar 8:19pm hyde:

i think both Bono and Dave Grohl need to be banned from being in music documentaries
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Did Bono ruin a Dr. John doc specifically? or does he just show up to poop around in every music doc ever?
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: that friend speaks my mind
Avatar 8:20pm hyde:

they show up EVERY time!
Avatar 8:21pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Thats it, im picking up that Richard Hayman record... Sounds so good!
  8:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Every doc ever. What a poopy doofus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm melinda:

I like this background music.
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

@ Melinda and Sadhu: yeah that Hayman is top-shelf Exotica. highly recommended
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

THANK YOU SADU IN OSLO, you warrior heart
Avatar 8:32pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Well it wasnt much, but after all the years ive followed your blog and all the sweet music you given me, that was the least i could do
Avatar 8:33pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Oh. And now i figured out what that heart thing was too. haha
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

every little bit is appreciated by WFMU, and for myself even words are currency of great value
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

yeah now you got a heart! who else needs a heart?
Avatar 8:39pm hyde:

just because we're presumin' you could be that kind of human
Avatar 8:40pm burke:

Anybody know what a "spyboy" is? Seems like it must be a sentinel-type duty for a N.O. street gang.
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

This track is so laid back meandering and weird, like tripping acid and fishing in a tranquil stream at the same time
Avatar 8:40pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Looks like you are the only one without one.... That came out wrong...
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

man most of this slang and patois and pidgin is total mystery to me, I WISH I knew what a spyboy was
Avatar 8:41pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Oh. This one is so good!
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

I AM the only sucka without a heart. damn, man. right in the heart you stab me, only to find an empty air pocket
Avatar 8:42pm hyde:

according to the internets. the "spy boy" is the first in line ahead of the Big Chief in Mardi Gras Indians parades
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm melinda:

I think a spyboy is part of a Mardi Gras Indian tribe, someone who scouts out other tribes? Something like that.
Avatar 8:44pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Speaking of Mardi Gras, Whill Mardi Gras Day come later?
Avatar 8:44pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Avatar 8:45pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: Haha. Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm melinda:

@hyde: that sounds more correct. Sometimes I like to wing it and see how wrong I am.
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

Sounds like you're both basically on point, Hyde & Melinda

@Sadhu: probably gonna skip that one, tryin to go all-spooky stuff from here on out
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

@melinda ha, it seems like you came pretty close. me, i had no idea so i had to look it up!
Avatar 8:48pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: Sounds like a plan. Also Mardi Gras Day is close to 9 minutes, so that wouldnt leave much time for anything else.
Avatar 8:49pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Wow. Clicked my heart and it turned black. How depressing. :(
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

Well, I mean, I'm definitely going over time! But not too much tonight. Last week was out of control!
Avatar 8:49pm burke:

The best thing about creole terms is how hard they are to pin down. So adaptable! Is what I tell my spyboy when he asks me what he's there for.
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

I love hearing this one live and stripped down
Avatar 8:50pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Never heard this recording actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm melinda:

Emmylou Harris had an album called Spyboy.
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

he does a few night tripper numbers on this broadcast, Guilded Splinters, loop garoo, one other
Avatar 8:52pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Is it a record or ripped from youtube?
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

it's a record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm melinda:

The Sun, Moon and Herbs is an excellent album title.
Avatar 8:54pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Cool. I'll look it up. Knew there would be SOMETHING here tonight i hadnt heard before. Thats what makes the mighty FLASH
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

Angola, for those who don't know, is a notorious Louisiana prison. I used to think this song was about the civil war in Angola, Africa. Which would be cool too, but it's a straight-up prison nightmare song and that's important!
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

haha, you got that right! everybody has a little somethin that makes em special
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

Leadbelly got sent to Angola Prison, that's where the Lomaxes recorded him
Avatar 9:00pm burke:

I think one of the Nevilles was locked up there too.
Avatar 9:06pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: How long do you plan on going?
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

I knew that, Hyde, but I did not know that, Burke
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

we got one more set, probably 25-30 minutes
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

THANK YOU DOUGLAS may you mousse the stache of Fairbanks eternal
Avatar 9:08pm grouper:
