This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi all. Chiming in a bit late here, but been streeming from my phone on the way home. Great show so far. Some burning jazz there earlier on!
Avatar 6:33pm Flash Strap:

I hate to tell ya, Sadhu, but here at the Explorers Room we haven't even started yet! I think you're just hearing that sublime stream!
Avatar 6:36pm Sadhu Sadhu:

WHAT?! haha. i must have messed up the time difference. But there has some great stuff so far.
Avatar 6:37pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Oh well, at least im not late then :)
Avatar 6:40pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Is there a playlist for this anywhere tho? Cause there was at least 3 tracks that i would love to track down....
Avatar 6:41pm Flash Strap:

I don't think it's kept track of, but I honestly don't know. Anyway, I'll be on in 20
Avatar 6:44pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Sweet! Looking farward to it.
Avatar 6:59pm ndbob:

evening Evan and everyone!
Avatar 7:00pm Flash Strap:

Hey Bob!
Avatar 7:00pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Evening ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Evan and all!
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Hey there James, James from Westwood!
Avatar 7:03pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hi James!
Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

Hi all.

@Sadhu I've heard Doug say in the past that if you know the time that something was playing that he can maybe tell you what it was....
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Can you believe it? While we were all sleeping, Explorers Room met its goal! Crazy
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde!
  7:07pm Dean:

If an earlier account today is correct, this is the third time a track from this Cowley record has been played today on this station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm melinda:

hi everyone.
.
Avatar 7:07pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hi Hyde! That would be great! There was som truly fantastc tunes there about an hour ago. Where do i contatc Doug thou?
Avatar 7:08pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hello Melinda
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

@Dean: oh no!

Hi Melinda!
  7:09pm Dean:

Not saying that's a bad thing!
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

i hate to be part of the oversaturation campaign, but man I love Cowley's ambient porn work, and while I don't like Muscle Up as much as School Daze, this track has really been doin it for me
Avatar 7:10pm hyde:

@Sadhu there's a contact link on the Doug Schulkind profile page...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm melinda:

I think heavy saturation is good. I've seen Patrick Cowley's name a lot but I'm not familiar with his music, so hearing it a few times is a good introduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Carmichael:

FLASH! Aaaaahh, savior of the universe!
Avatar 7:13pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: I'll look him up. Thanks!
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Hey Carmichael! I, uh, love that movie
  7:14pm Dean:

Never realized Cowley produced Sylvester, which would have fit, more or less, Jeff Golick's disco-themed show.
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

His production of Sylvester's I Need Somebody to Love Tonight is narcotic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Carmichael:

I love that music!

@Sadhu: in the FMU iPhone app, push the middle button at the bottom.
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda: definitely check out School Daze, it's so great at times that I can't believe it
Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

don't know this guy, this is great
Avatar 7:17pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Carmuchael: There is an app?!
  7:18pm Dean:

I heard it all back in the day, but my touchstone for stuff like this was Edgar Froese and the gang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Carmichael:

Yes, Sadhu. How are you listening?
Avatar 7:20pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Carmichael: Listening from my laptop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Carmichael:

OK, Sadhu. There is an app for iphones or smart phones. Multiple streams from either one.
Avatar 7:25pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Carmichael: Downloaded it now. Looking into it.
  7:25pm Dean:

Not Jeff Golick. Gary Sullivan did the disco show.
Avatar 7:28pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Looks like i can only sign in with Last.fm in the app or am i missing something?
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

Tech Support for Sadhu, aisle unknown!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm melinda:

@carmichael: I didn't realize until now that all streams and archives are available on the app! I usually listen w/my laptop too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Bluddy hell! WFMU is only $372 from reaching the freaking finish line! We are the 100%!

Pledge to Explorers Room and push the whole magilla over the top: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

I didn't know that either, Melinda. I don't even have a smartphone, so i don't think about these apps much, but some friends have complained that they can't call up the archives on the app
Avatar 7:32pm Little Danny:

Tuning in late this week - hi Flash! That Cowley comp popped up on my radar just today thanks to FMU's twitter feed. Also the Sylvester track "I Need..." is an all time fave. So kraut-loft.
Avatar 7:32pm Flash Strap:

Holy shit! Just that much? WE CAN MAKE IT!

Also, thank you Doug for turning me onto this record when you played "Arcane Message" the other day
Avatar 7:34pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Dough: Just the man i was looking for! I was told you might know what was playing before the show. Im thinking about to burnig jazz tracks that was played from about 5 past 6 and one string harp tune that was not long after. Info would be deeply apriciated!
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

Hi Danny! yeah that track is nuts. But i haven't heard much of Sylvester's other stuff unfortunately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Carmichael:

Sadhu & Melinda, go here: wfmu.org... This will answer all your burning app questions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Doug Schulkind:

@Sadhu Sadhu
Let me access the stream's history and get back to you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Īke:

Hello! You can't sign in as a commenter on the app, but otherwise it should work fine without using last.fm or anything else like that. Press the note symbol in the upper-left corner to access alternate streams like this one.
Avatar 7:36pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Doug: Awesome! Thanks!
@Carmichael: Thanks!
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

HIKE!
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

I'd never heard this Eno library slab till relatively recently, maybe I've been sleepin, but you'd think it'd be a bigger deal
Avatar 7:39pm northguineahills:

Oh, wait, I forgot to mention I love all of the Patrick Cowley reissues. I have to admit, I don't have this Brian Eno rekkid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Carmichael:

Gotta run, Flash & folks. I loved that Wali back there.
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! Bye Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm listener james from westwood:

Enjoying the "Textures!"
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

that Wali was killer. (fwiw, there's still a live link for it at Orgy in Rhythm)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm listener james from westwood:

Station $ total is juuuust north of a Mouse pledge from home! Go go go!
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

Oh, me too, LJfW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Doug Schulkind:

@Sadhu Sadhu
At 6:05 ET, the stream played "Mazinka" by Steven Bernstein. That was followed by "Woman Coming" by James Blood Ulmer. Not sure about a string harp number. I don't see anything that appears to be of that description around that time.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

indeed there is Hyde! I was so relived to discover it still hot after Doug played a cut from it a few weeks back
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

I'm with you, James! Onward Drummer Soldiers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Listener Dean in Beserkley, California, PLEDGED!! Thanks, Dean!
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Thank you DEAN!
Avatar 7:47pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Dough: Thanks! Let me think.. i was at the bus stop around 6. There was something, then the two jazz tracks thet totaly blew my mind, and then when i arrived home, must be around 6:25 there was an instrumental piece that was strings at least. maybe not harp. I'll look up the two you found thou and see if those were the ones i was thinking of. Again, thank you!
  7:47pm Dean:

Entirely my pleasure.
Avatar 7:48pm coelacanth:

Hi Evan and Exes
Avatar 7:49pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: This Brian Eno record is killing!
  7:49pm Dean:

...because I understand that when the station makes its goal the airwaves and all streams are interrupted with an extended remix of a mash-up of all the Sousa marches, right?
Avatar 7:50pm coelacanth:

this is the soundtrack to a jungle adventure- after eating some unfamiliar fruit...
Avatar 7:51pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Dean: Yea, those were the two numbers i was thinking of!
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Hey Hey, C. New face!
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

That sounds like a true celebration Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm melinda:

Great Eno. I was distracted by kitchen tasks and for some reason thought we were listening to a Patrick Cowley porn soundtrack. Silly me, that's what happens when I wander away from the playlist.
Avatar 7:56pm coelacanth:

this is my "i'm disturbed by what this ink blot represents to you" face.
Avatar 7:56pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: Thanks for the heads up about the Wali link on OiR!
Avatar 7:59pm coelacanth:

...like side 2 of before and after science. do not dislodge them from each-other.
Avatar 8:01pm ndbob:

excellent show Evan - catch the rest on the archive
Avatar 8:07pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: This track is choice!
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Hate to see you go Bob!

I agree, C.
  8:09pm PJ Peters:

Hello and good evening. Just joined in, but sounds great right now!
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

!
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hi PJ! Great to have you
Avatar 8:14pm hyde:

dude, that book looks awesome
Avatar 8:15pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Love this track!
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

thanks Hyde!
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

me too Sadhu!
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

This was on Basic Hip a ways back as well, though I also have this track on an LP called Rugolo plays Kenton
Avatar 8:25pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Basic Hip has had some amazing stuff up. I really enjoyed the Bill Plummer and the Cosmic Brotherhood LP too.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

God what an intro!
Avatar 8:26pm hyde:

@Sadhu ooh, I snagged that one but haven't listened to it yet....
Avatar 8:28pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: At least give the first track a spin! Probably my favourite on the record but that one track is worth the whole album alone. At least for me. Great track!
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

Oh, man! C., I hate to hear it! How are you recovering? well, I hope!
Avatar 8:30pm hyde:

@Sadhu oh, i'll get to it, for sure. i just have a backlog, heh.
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

I know how that goes, Hyde
Avatar 8:32pm coelacanth:

Thanks Evan. i'll be fine -one way or another!
i plan to work next week. i'll see how it goes.
Avatar 8:35pm hyde:

feel better, coelacanth!
Avatar 8:39pm coelacanth:

Thanks hyde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Good healing to you, coelacanth.
Avatar 8:39pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: Yea, i know the feeling. I keep "discovering" gems that have been on my HD for years that i never remember, and probably never heard.
@Coelacanth: Get well!
Avatar 8:42pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: BTW, just struck me, as a fan of Ashra - Tropical Heat, have you checked out Hearth by Baffo Banfi?
Avatar 8:42pm coelacanth:

Thanks Doug & Sadhu Sadhu!
...it's probably just 1 broken rib and possibly a fracture in a vertebrae. 'nothing to do but take it easy and wait.
Avatar 8:43pm Sadhu Sadhu:

(just came to think of it while you were talking about digital percussion)
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

That's a good one, Sadhu
Avatar 8:44pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@coelacanth: Are you in the states? And how does it work? Do you not get sick leave for that kind of things?
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, C. I wear my heart on my sleeve
Avatar 8:45pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: yea. there is some amzing tracks on that one.
Avatar 8:45pm coelacanth:

(i think of digital percussion as tabla playing.)
Avatar 8:48pm coelacanth:

' Sadhu i am, but i'm self-employed.

...i'm not worried! -but Thanks!
Avatar 8:48pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Flash: slightly silly question, conciddering you have this sweet radio show now and all the archives. So, yea this question makes no sense, still. I miss your mix tapes! Will there be more? Or only radio from now? (dont get me wrong. I love this show, but for some weird reason. i also miss checking your blog and go "Awesome! A new Flash mix for my DL pleasure!"
Avatar 8:49pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@C: Ok. I see. Well. Hope you get well and back on track soon!
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

I've been thinking about that too, Sadhu. I would like to, but so much of that sort of time goes into prepping a new show each week. But this is just the first year I've done this, I'm learning to make more time, and I have some cool mix ideas coming up
Avatar 8:53pm hyde:

the mixes *are* great. last Thanksgiving I hit my family with hours of Bibliothèque Exotique when they all came over for dinner. I may make them listen to the Umilianis this time.
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

wow wonderful! wonderful!

I think the next one will be Plant Musics, which I've already done a show on, but I thought it would be a good mix too
Avatar 8:55pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Yea, i can imagine that most of that time goes for prepearing shows and leaves less time to make mixes on top of that, so a mix again would be a super bonus. But now i at least know that you are still thinking of doing some again!
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

this stuff is from a really amazing Partch "Dance Satire" :

Argument
We are all bewitched, and mostly by accident: the accident
of form, color, and sex; of prejudices conditioned from the
cradle on up, of the particular ruts we have found ourselves
in or have dug for ourselves because of our individual needs.
Those in a long-tenanted rut enjoy larger comforts of mind an
d body, and as compensation it is given to others who are
not so easily domesticated to become
mediums for the transmission of perception, more frequently. Among these are the
lost musicians. The present-day musician grows up in a half
-world between “good” music and “not-so-good” music. Even
when he has definitely made his choice between the two, he
is still affected by the other, and to that extent he is
dichotomous and disoriented. His head is bathed in an ancien
t light through a Gothic window while his other end swings
like a miniature suspension bridge in a cool right-angle
gale. The perception of displaced musicians may germinate,
evolve, and mature in concert, through a de
veloping at-one-ness, through their beat.
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, Ed, you big hearted soul!
Avatar 8:57pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Speaking of mixes. Did you guys check out Distant Drums by Moahaha? (He did some guest mixes for Holy Warbles back in theday as well) I think ist a couple of years old, but i just recenty found it. If you havent checked it out; Its FANTASTIC.
Avatar 8:58pm hyde:

I would love to see those actual crazy Harry Partch instruments. Those things seem completely insane.
Avatar 8:59pm hyde:

oh, hah, i have not heard this song in forever
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

I know! I KNOW! GOD!

When I was in Bali I almost died just LOOKING at the gamelan instruments... I'd probably just fly to the moon to see Partch's inventions
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

Moahaha does great mixes. he did a killer Yusef Lateef a ways back
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

This, for me, is the actual best Tom Waits song. I think. This or Clap Hands. This is the most exotic-resonant
Avatar 9:01pm Sadhu Sadhu:

I'll just drop that Distant Drum mix right here if any one haven't heard it: mega:///#!DcgTkAiZ!pkJti2xpvZe2AgLoD6qciHNa7iiLAxBIfTtCxZwby10
Avatar 9:01pm coelacanth:

huh, someone made me a favorites mix of this album and 2 other Waits albums on one cd,years ago. this didn't make the cut!
...i've got some holes to fill in.
Avatar 9:01pm hyde:

@Flash well really you just have to go to Montclair State, but i think they keep those things locked up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Flash Strap mentioned God and Yusef Lateef in the same comment. Makes perfect sense to me.
Avatar 9:02pm hyde:

what is that Tom Waits record that is like sort of crazy circus music? i love that one too.
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

I know you are the great lover of Yusef, Doug. I need you to school me one day. I love him, I know this, but I don't know enough
Avatar 9:04pm hyde:

Black Rider, that's the one. All offbeat waltz.
Avatar 9:05pm northguineahills:

Am I the only one having trouble w/ the stream? I also tried the pop-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Doug Schulkind:

It will be my delight and yours, Flash Strap.
Avatar 9:06pm hyde:

hmm dunno, ngh, stream has been ok for me
Avatar 9:06pm coelacanth:

i don't think i know that one either, hyde. my knowledge of Tom Waits' music is like swiss cheese.
Avatar 9:06pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@north: Stream is fine here. I just discovered the app was behind by 5 minutes or so, but other than that it seems fine
Avatar 9:07pm coelacanth:

my stream's okay ngh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm melinda:

What are these mixes you speak of?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Doug Schulkind:

No probs here, northguineahills. Try refreshing/restarting whatever device/machine you are using.

@Sadhu Sadhu The app is off by 5 minutes? Wow! That's bizarre. I've noticed 20-30 seconds, but not that much. Interesting.
Avatar 9:09pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Doug: it was now. Tom Waits had just started when i saw the track list beeing updated to Kenyon on my laptop.
Avatar 9:10pm hyde:

@Sadhu thanks for the distant drums mix. I'll check that out, I remember Moahaha mixes being on Ghost Capital.
Avatar 9:11pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@hyde: did that link work thou?
Avatar 9:11pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: Here is a complete list of his mixes: www.rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm melinda:

Damn, I missed Tom Waits! Great selection for this show.
Avatar 9:12pm Sadhu Sadhu:

(@Dough: Listening to my phone while chatting on my laptop)
Avatar 9:15pm hyde:

@Sadhu yeah from the link you posted I followed a link to mega.nz that downloaded the zip
Avatar 9:16pm hyde:

@Sadhu also thanks for the full list, but, y'know, this is NOT gonna help with my backlog!
Avatar 9:17pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@hyde: haha. Sorry! Start with Distant drums tho.
Avatar 9:18pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Good night all! Thanks for yet an other good show Flash! AND I LOVE THIS TRACK! Great ending!
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

C.: hit me up if you need help with getting into Tom Waits, true master
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth:

Ha! when i was brainwashed with inkspots, once, in my former life- this was one of my favorites of all....probably my favorite.

Thank you Evan
'till then y'all.
Avatar 9:19pm northguineahills:

The regular WFMU stream works fine, just not GTDS stream, weird.
Avatar 9:19pm hyde:

bye all. Thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth:

(this and "when the swallows come back to capistrano")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Exquisite.
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

Good night all friends, may you drift on calm waters till the sun rises anew
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm melinda:

Great show Flash!
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth:

Thanks Evan. i may take you up on that; but i must double-check my collection first.
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

The necessary LPs: Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Frank's Wild Years, Bone Machine, Black Rider (the Island years, basically). Then you just GOTTA have Nighthawks at the Diner. After that, it;s all up to your tastes
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

Thanks Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm melinda:

Closing Time is another excellent Waits album, all the more interesting if you start with the later stuff.
