Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Jeff Golick:

(might go a minute or two long today, Amanda - sorry!)
  12:01pm Listener Robert:

Has the switchover happened yet, or will I need to restart the Flash player?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Amanda:

Hi Listener Robert! No, it hasn't happened yet.
Avatar 12:02pm bpd:

been a few weeks away, feels good to be back.
  12:03pm Listener Robert:

That's OK, I switched to ITunes playing the .pls .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Amanda:

Aww, that's nice to hear bpd. :-) We'll get 'er going in just a minute.
  12:04pm P-90:

Happy switchover, everybody!
Hi Amanda and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Amanda and all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

I love this song so much...and this really is the best version.
Avatar 12:05pm KP:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Amanda, for the generous overtime allotment! You are the opposite of a harsh mistress.
  12:07pm MONEYBAG$:

Read a great quote the other day: "Life is what happens in between Nazario Scenarios".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Amanda:

John Lennon said that, right? BTW, I've decided to not cite the dates of the recordings today. But this is from 1972 and the next one is from 1966, FWIW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Uncle Michael:

This song is now *not* in the Friday show! Har. Nice one, Amanda...
  12:09pm MONEYBAG$:

Not sure, it was in a fortune cookie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Amanda:

Too bad they didn't go with the "stick with your wife" barrel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Amanda:

@Uncle Michael, I hope other songs in my show don't mess you up! Because we aren't done with the PF Sloan portion by half.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

I was just playing the one. There are lots of great ones. I'll pick another. It's a good thing. More for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Brian in UK:

Hello Amanda, A Lennon quote, not sure if it is correctly attributed. "Reality leaves a lot to the imagination".
Avatar 12:15pm KP:

This is a great but i miss the octave bass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo. On point are we? Wherez my cute critters & cartoonz mommy - ?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

I used to do a Saturday night occasional show and always ended with this Brinsley's record. The spoken part kinda cracks me up.
  12:19pm Sean:

Right there with you, KP
Avatar 12:19pm KP:

Just heard a Feelies great live version of Paint it Black and i think i was there that night.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

A "Simpsons Time"?! In the first hour? "Whaaaaa—??"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

Amazing, amazing episode, S1-itis or no. "But it's got antifreeze in it!"
Avatar 12:27pm ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!
  12:29pm original famous sugarwolf:

So the wifi at shake shack blocks wfmu and the app!!

I can look at all the porn I want on tumblr tho

I'd rather listen to Simpson time discussion!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm listener james from westwood:

Love the little exchange at the spy swap at the end. So world weary.
  12:33pm P-90:

Ah yes, I remember the "not yet mean" Agnes...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yay, Smart Ken tuned in early today. Glad I found Simpsons Time!
Avatar 12:40pm KP:

I think ive mentioned here before that whoever does Homer's voice on French TV is magnifique! Spot on. Everybody else is a little lacking, not Msr. Homer.
  12:40pm Listener Robert:

The genericity yet familiarity of non-recurring characters in season 1 was what led me to believe for many years that when we saw ostensibly the same character in various episodes, it wasn't meant to be exactly the same person, but a generic type. They tended to introduce character names only slowly & as needed, which is why, for instance, I was led to think the 3 police characters represented different but similar police each time they were introduced, making a joke about stereotypes.
  12:41pm original famous sugarwolf:

Off to boring old work, glad I got to check in for a little bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Homer being so naïve about Adiel kind of set the stage for his personality for the rest of the series. Totally unaware most of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

@Ken: Reminds me of Homer not noticing how hard Lurleen was coming on to him.
  12:43pm Listener Robert:

The thing isn't that the boy speaks French, but that he as well as all Simpson characters know whatever they really need to know at the time. Like when he knows enough to pass a hx test with one extended oral remark. Or when Mr. Simpson can read & speak Chinese. Which is an extension of how all cartoon characters do that.
  12:45pm Listener Robert:

As was explained in a strip once: "You're a cartoon character, aren't you? Don't you know when a cartoon character needs something, it just magically appears?"
  12:46pm Listener Robert:

"Steven". I just remembered that's the name of the strip that balloon was from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Brian in UK:

Hints of Eve of Destruction there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

Indeed, Brian, pleasantly so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Amanda:

@KP - the French Homer & Marge fell in love and married IRL!

@Ken: That's true, good point. Poor naive Homer...

@sugarwolf: Thank you for checking in albeit briefly and non-hearing-ly!
  12:55pm original famous sugarwolf:

@amanda: I went next door to le pain quotidien to use their wifi!!

I got a macaroon but not a macaron
  12:57pm MONEYBAG$:

I always wanted to start hardcore band using only middle school french lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Gaylord Fields:

@original famous sugarwolf: Did you get a macron to go with your diaeresis?
  12:59pm P-90:

Beethoven's 7th Symphony, 2nd movement
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Amanda:

@Listener Robert - That's true about the flexible reality of cartoons, of course. But in the series they often refer back to things in passing -- Homer going to space, for instance. That's more what I was getting at.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm listener james from westwood:

OF Sugarwolf: Still better than getting a Macarena.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Gaylord Fields:

During the Ponderosa Stomp conference, P.F. Sloan lamented that the lyrics to EOD are all too relevant 50 years later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Brian in UK:

Amanda ever got downwind of Mr Sloan's Album Raised on Records, probably '72/73. Some good songs. Early 70's singer/songwriter style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Dominick:

I can't begin to tell you how wrapped up I was in Sloan's music back in 1965.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Amanda:

Fart, sorry about the way that sounded all distorted though. By next Pride show I'll have a nicer-sounding record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm listener james from westwood:

@Amanda: That's where the Record Fair can help!
Avatar 1:14pm ndbob:

Same here Dominick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm listener james from westwood:

I sure feel bad for ::squint:: the Impsons!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

My absolute favorite Quimby line: "Ducking this issue calls for real leadership!" Cannot say it with a straight face.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...except interwebz says I must be wrong - it wasn't that one...
  1:26pm Sean:

Ned Flanders:"Jimdandy chant you got us, Homer!"
Homer:"It's something I heard at the Moustache Day parade some guys in leather pants were saying . . Thought it would work for this"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Smart Ken didn't tune out. S M R T ! I mean " S M A R T !"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm listener james from westwood:

"We had to move out when we filled the head with garbage. The end."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

"I pay the Homer tax! Let the bears pay the bear tax!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

That is one of THE BEST paper gags. Up there with "Deadbeat Dad Beat Dead."
Avatar 1:35pm steve:

i get here late and miss TWO SIMPSONS TIMES?!?!
Avatar 1:35pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i only missed one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You know, I just noticed Chris Christie is a lot like Diamond Joe Quimby.
Avatar 1:37pm steve:

He lied to us through song... I hate when people do that!
Avatar 1:38pm steve:

oh wait thats from Homer and Apu, nevermind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm listener james from westwood:

Chamberlain here holding what was previously England's funniest joke, according to Monty Python.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Amanda:

That's right! One person saw two words together and had to be hospitalized for a month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm listener james from westwood:

Not even chanting laments helped that one guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Amanda:

That's the home-OWNER tax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm listener james from westwood:

Ask not what your chiasmus can do for you. Ask what you can do for your chiasmus.
Avatar 1:52pm KP:

great stuff, Amanda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Amanda:

Aw thanks, KP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm listener james from westwood:

@Dean: Excellent call on the rhetorical term! My favorite is from the Bible:

And Saul said [to Agag, King of the Amalekites],
"As your sword has made women childless,
So shall your mother be childless among women."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Amanda:

Not sure if I've ever been this much of a hippie, like, EVER.
Avatar 1:58pm ndbob:

excellent show Amanda!
  1:58pm P-90:

Well done. Thanks for this show, two Simpsons Times, P F Sloane, FDR, JFK, the works...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Fabulous show Amanda. Thanks for the Double Dose. And now a Great ending!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Dominick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm listener james from westwood:

(Spoiler: This doesn't go well for Agag, King of the Amalekites.)

Superb tunes and a fantastic call on the two Simpsonseses, Amanda!
  2:01pm King Agag:

Watch for my big comeback in 2016!
  2:02pm Dean:

@ljfw: Thanks. It's a fun word to boot. I'll guess the KJV is loaded with chiasmus. OED's lone quote to illustrate the term is:

Frequentia sustentatur, alitur otio. This is a good instance of the..figure called chiasmus..in which the order of words in the first clause is inverted in the second.

...which teaches me that the figure includes reversal of kinds of words.
Avatar 2:03pm KP:

Thanks, Amanda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm listener james from westwood:

@Dean, it absolutely was an aspect of the original Hebrew's poetry, so good call!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Amanda:

Thanks super much for listening today, dudes!
