This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

I admit this is a, uh, unusual theme this evening. I promise to keep it interesting!
Avatar 7:18pm

I remember my friend - who listens to a lot of unusual music - playing this - and it totally freaked out his cat

hahaha the residents are not cat music: true

God, Laurie Anderson is just the best, the best
Avatar 7:23pm
northguineahills:

I somehow got a hold of Laurie Anderson's "United States" vinyl box set. It tre nice. About a decade ago, she sat next to me at my friend's bar/club. She's a very down-to-earth women.
Avatar 7:24pm
Flash Strap:

jealous of the box set NGH! and welcome!
Avatar 7:26pm

finally, the playlist scrolled down enough that i don't need to look at baby drool!
Avatar 7:27pm
Flash Strap:

Hyde, I think you might have a baby phobia. Which is reasonable enough
Avatar 7:30pm
hyde:

i guess it is kind of obvious that i'm not really a baby guy.
Avatar 7:32pm
Flash Strap:

me either, really. certain babies are ok by me, though
Avatar 7:34pm

yeah, my nephew and his wife brought over their new kid on Thanksgiving. It was cute enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
melinda:

My sister had the Big Science album when I was 11 or so and I felt so cool and avant garde when we listened to it. I think it was the first time I'd heard music where someone talked instead of singing.
Avatar 7:36pm
ndbob:

I lost track of Laurie Anderson's music - but I listened to a lot of her early stuff.
Avatar 7:36pm
Flash Strap:

One of my favorite records, total mindblower. I still feel cool and avant garde when I hear it! Just like the first time
Avatar 7:37pm

Unlikely cover version here - the Plantation Gold collection is great

1982 was a great music year for me.
Avatar 7:40pm
ndbob:

@Melinda what were some of your other 1982 faves?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
melinda:

Aw, I love Kooks! One of the best baby songs.
Avatar 7:41pm
Flash Strap:

i second that, bob
Avatar 7:41pm
Flash Strap:

it really is, Melinda. it's undeniable in it's earnest sentiment, and from one of the least vulnerable songwriters of all time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
melinda:

@ndbob: I think it was the year I started watching MTV and I was 11, so it was just really exciting. Men at Work was one of my favorites. Also Stevie Nicks' Leather and Lace. I was still young and innocent and grooving on top 40 tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
melinda:

Men at Work *were* one of my faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Doug Schulkind:

Explorers Vroom!
Avatar 7:50pm

@Melinda I like Men at Work - they inspired me to try Vegemite - only once - I still kind of groove on Top 40 tunes at times - tho not that much recently
Avatar 7:52pm

Raymond Scott isn't played enough, that's for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm

Haha! I don't know their Antarctica either. Safety Dance was good but brings back negative junior high memories for me, I guess my golden age of top 40 was over then.

Avatar 8:01pm
Flash Strap:

thanks for listening bob, always good to have you in whatever form and for however long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm

Soothing Sounds for Baby vol.2 was the first sort of ambient-techno music I bought.
Avatar 8:02pm

I'm just glad you're listening, Mayuko at Work, no need to feed my comment box if it conflicts with productivity
Avatar 8:02pm
Flash Strap:

Is anybody familiar with Raymond Scott's cartoon jazz (my guess is, probably yes). Just blows my mind that it's the same guy
Avatar 8:03pm
ndbob:

You mean like "Twilight in Turkey"?
Avatar 8:03pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, exactly
Avatar 8:04pm

i agree with ngh. raymond scott is amazing. there's a cool video on youtube of the r.s. quintette playing "powerhouse" from the 50's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
Uncle Michael:

Flash, are you aware that almost everything we know about Raymond Scott is thanks to brother Irwin Chusid?
Avatar 8:05pm
hyde:

@Flash Strap yeah, i have a couple of the cd's of the warner bros tunes. amazing stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
Doug Schulkind:

Otherwise known as "Ol' Pal Irwin," WFMU's longest-running deejay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm
Uncle Michael:

The Carl Stalling Project likely never happens without Irwin's earlier Scott reissue.
Avatar 8:07pm
Flash Strap:

I had no idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
melinda:

I didn't know that Uncle Michael but I'm not surprised. I was delighted when I found out he was the one responsible for the Langley Schools Music Project, which I'm a big fan of.
Avatar 8:07pm
hyde:

@UM i have that reissue, but i never noticed that before. cool.
Avatar 8:08pm
Flash Strap:

That's so utterly amazing. I am just humbled before the light of knowledge here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Uncle Michael:

Oops, that's backwards. Irwin did the '92 reissue after the '90 WB comp.
Avatar 8:08pm
ndbob:

I remember when Irwin first played the Langley Schools music on the Incorrect Music Show - what a discovery!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah, Irwin is managing Scott's musical legacy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
melinda:

I wasn't listening to WFMU back then but learned of it when they featured it and him on an NPR segment. Still great.
Avatar 8:10pm
hyde:

i also have a cool 12" lp of the Raymond Scott Orchestra from the forties. It's on bluebird or hindsight, one of those big band reissue labels.
Avatar 8:11pm
Flash Strap:

There's so much about WFMU that I need to learn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Uncle Michael:

I bought the Scott comp when it came out...many years before I heard of WFMU.
Avatar 8:11pm
ndbob:

@Melinda sure is:)
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

@Hyde: I think I have the one you're talking about. Rock and Roll Symphony?
Avatar 8:21pm
hyde:

@Flash oops, wandered off. yeah, that's the one. i got it for like four bucks!
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

Yeah, I got it for a song at some record convention, too. Not his most experimental work by any means, but pretty enjoyable stuff
Avatar 8:26pm
ndbob:

I've had Raymond Scott 78s before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm

@Sir Flash
And WFMU has so much to learn of the elegant threads you add to the tapestry.

Avatar 8:34pm

I'll miss you too, Hyde!
Avatar 8:35pm

He did quite a few, I believe. He was prolific.

It's a really fun watch, they're both such gentle guys and Rogers is so into the synthesizers
Avatar 8:41pm

there was a blog or tumblr i came across a while back that was all about early synth on kid's shows...
Avatar 8:41pm

Avatar 8:42pm
northguineahills:

Another Irwin fave, Moondog.
Avatar 8:42pm
Mayuko:

I remember that Bruce doc film, but it wasn't as exciting as I had expected. Also it's many years ago I watched it so I only remember he was from Canada (which I didn't know), went Juilliard (?) and he was pretty frustrated that he didn't become successful as mush as he had thought, something like that. I couldn't really get who really he was as a human, and as an artist.
Avatar 8:42pm
Flash Strap:

that's really cool, Hyde. How old were you?
Avatar 8:43pm
Flash Strap:

I think he was a pretty weird guy, with real alcohol problems.
Avatar 8:43pm
ndbob:

I had a Haack children's record but don't remember which one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Doug Schulkind:

Watch this after Explorers Room:
Fred Rogers defending the funding of public broadcasting at a Senate hearing, 1969: www.americanrhetoric.com...

Amazing.
Avatar 8:44pm
Mayuko:

From what I heard it seemed like Irwin knows way more about Bruce Haack too, than what was in that doc film!
Avatar 8:44pm
Flash Strap:

i love that video
Avatar 8:44pm
hyde:

i was five. mr rogers came to boston and i apparently MADE my mother take me. i don't really remember it, but i also made my mother stand in line until we could get an autographed picture, which i had for years.
Avatar 8:45pm

how wonderful. I'm jealous
Avatar 8:47pm

I have no idea how Moondog ended up in a studio with Julie Andrews, right at the beginning of his career, but it happened
