This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hey there!
Avatar 7:01pm ndbob:

evening Evan, Gary, everyone!
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Hey Gary, Hey Bob!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

How you guys doin tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

I'm still working (editing stuff), but happy
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Love to hear ya happy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

Are you moving for a specific job, for school, or just for a change?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm melinda:

Hi everyone!
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Moving for change, mainly, with some trepidation that there is no job awaiting me–YET
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

Will be hanging here for a bit before I have leave my pad. This Boundless reminds me of some 80s Klaus Schulze.
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! I agree!
Avatar 7:21pm ndbob:

Hey there Melinda! Hey NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm melinda:

Flash, when you say NC is your ancestral homeland, are you talking recent or distant ancestors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm melinda:

hi ndbob!
Avatar 7:22pm Little Danny:

Missed your first mic set, but really dug the Boundless, Evan.
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

actually, that was a pretty off-base joke on my part: I moved to NC when I was a boy, and grew up there, but I have no ancestral ties whatsoever. More a feeling of affinity than anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm melinda:

Affinity is what matters most!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

Hi Danny! Great to have you late, early, ever. Sent you a package yesterday, by the way
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

@melinda, I agree, and I hope we are both right about it
Avatar 7:26pm Little Danny:

Ooooooooh, I can't wait!
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

won't have to wait long!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm melinda:

Reading straight down the track list is making me laugh. Even if you hadn't explained tonight's theme it would be clear.
Avatar 7:29pm northguineahills:

Tappa Zukie is hitting the spot. I was playing some U-Roy w/ Trinity earlier.
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

Sounds good, NGH. Trinity is a scream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Doug Schulkind:

My wife's cousin's son owns a wonderful bookstore in Durham.
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

you get me, Melinda!
Avatar 7:31pm ndbob:

Hard to choose, but maybe my favorite moving song is "Moving Day" by Buzz Clifford
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

I'm gonna have to visit that book store doug, tell me everything
Avatar 7:32pm Little Danny:

Oh, Phil & the Frantics' "I Must Run" is a total rip of this song by the Zombies. Esoteric shit I learned today, just now.
Avatar 7:32pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hi gang. A little late here, but the app saved me on the way home.
Avatar 7:33pm ndbob:

@Danny that's a good one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm melinda:

hi Sadhu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm melinda:

I like North Carolina. I almost went to school there but headed to the Midwest instead.
Avatar 7:35pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hey melinda.
  7:35pm spookcityusa:

i'm wearing all the masks.
Avatar 7:36pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Spookcity: sounds like a plan and welcome
  7:37pm spookcityusa:

those borders listening stations my man
Avatar 7:37pm ndbob:

@Melinda where in the midwest?
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hi Sadhu Sadhu
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

I'm curious too, melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

I am old enough that I still think of this record as a "new" David Bowie album :(
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

and: HELLO, my spook! Wonderful to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm melinda:

@ndbob: U of Iowa in Iowa City. moved to New England after 10 years cause I needed a change, and a lot of friends had left, but I have very fond memories of those years.
Avatar 7:42pm spookcityusa:

i came in waaaay too late. ferrante & teicher is my jam. i have one of their cheesier ones from the sixties, maybe something about romantical strings, utterly captivating though.
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

ha, Gary! I am young enough that I think of it as an almost "lost" Bowie album. It's one of my very very favorites
Avatar 7:42pm spookcityusa:

heya hi flash!
Avatar 7:42pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@gary: :)
Avatar 7:45pm spookcityusa:

this reminds me a lot of the new panabrite. lovely!
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

I can talk F&T all night, man. They are pretty amazing when they try to be. Got a pretty decent collection of their early stuff going. Just scored a vinyl copy of Soundproof, the one with the UFO on the cover!
Avatar 7:45pm ndbob:

@Melinda sounds good - I used to stop in Iowa City when I would drive from North Dakota to Maryland - when I moved a couple years ago it was one of three places I had narrowed it down to - but I chose Bloomington, Indiana
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

@melinda: I love New England... was in Boston for 8 years. Got too cold, but I miss it dearly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm melinda:

@ndbob: Indiana U was one of my other school possibilities. Good art dept., and I'd seen Breaking Away as a child and it left a lasting (positive) impression of Bloomington. The other school I looked into was Webster University in.....St. Louis. Haha.
Avatar 7:49pm spookcityusa:

all i really know about bloomington is that rapider than hosepower are from there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm melinda:

@flash: I tolerate the cold ok but less so with passing years.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

I don't know much about Webster, but I can confidently say that no one should ever associate with Wash. U unless they want massive agony and pointless cruelty to be a regular part of their lives.

Love Breaking Away, that area's where my true ancestral heritage arises from
Avatar 7:53pm ndbob:

@melinda Both the movie and TV shows of "Breaking Away" are good - and not as cold as Iowa City here - after five years in North Dakota I'd had enough of extreme cold - though Iowa City isn't nearly that cold
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Spookcityusa is here! You're a helluva a joy distributor, Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm melinda:

That bad, flash? I have to say I don't miss academia, even though I like college at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm melinda:

liked, not like
Avatar 7:55pm northguineahills:

Mike Cooper! Thanks Flash, gotta skidaddle!
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

worse, actually, and I kind of love academia.
Avatar 7:56pm spookcityusa:

aw well shucks many thanks doug! haven't seen you in ages!
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

hate to see you leave, love to watch you skeedaddle, NGH
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Doug, have you heard this particular Cooper? I'm sort of bowled over by it, and it seems pretty rare
Avatar 7:56pm Little Danny:

This Mike Cooper is new to me and totally great.
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

Me too Danny! the whole album is sublime–in keeping with his others in the vein, but almost more lush and abstract
Avatar 7:58pm Sadhu Sadhu:

AH! Love Bali Ha'i. In almost all its incarnations. Such a lovely tune
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - can stick around chat for a while - will miss your show when you are gone - but I will be able to catch up on the archives - have a great move!
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

love to see you sporting an avatar and everything, spook!
Avatar 7:59pm spookcityusa:

lovin this cates my man
Avatar 8:00pm spookcityusa:

eh tryin to keep up with the thymes ya know??
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

Definitely keep an ear out for the Novachord on these tracks, so choice
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

agreed, Sadhu. really good composition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Don't got this Coop, Flash. Unless I do. Might be under a deep pile. The cover looks very familiar.
Avatar 8:02pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Leo Addeo and His Orchestra has a good tka on it.
Avatar 8:02pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Avatar 8:03pm Little Danny:

When Bali Ha'i is done right it's just the dreamiest.
Avatar 8:04pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Little Danny: Truer words have not been spoken!
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

I think my favorite might be Tak Shindo's version. But there are so many good takes
Avatar 8:06pm Little Danny:

Flash, when you get a spare second in the coming months you should look up Houston & Dorsey's version of "Ebb Tide." It is so you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm melinda:

Love the cosmic organ.
Avatar 8:06pm Little Danny:

Agreed on Tak Shindo. The Surfmen's version is also tops.
Avatar 8:06pm coelacanth:

greetings Flash and strapping explorers
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Oh, agreed, Danny. The Surfmen really knock everything they do out of the park
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

and will do on the Ebb Tide!
Avatar 8:08pm Sadhu Sadhu:

im obviously not having my head screwed right on tonight. i was thinking of Sam Cookes take on it. damn. (looked in itunes without tinking...)
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Helooooooooo, C.! Wonderful to see you!
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

I love this record... I have 2 copies, one in stereo, which we're hearing, called Shangri-La, and one in mono, same cover, but titled BEWITCHED
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

heh, bumped the turntable. sorry all!
Avatar 8:12pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Guess that makes sense, since it both has Shangri-la AND the opening track is bewitched. Alas, i only have a digital copy. :/ But i had no idea there was two different titles for this one.
Avatar 8:15pm spookcityusa:

the berlin trilogy is the apex of dude's career
Avatar 8:23pm hyde:

geez, did i fall for a practical joke or something? i thought there was no explorer's room this week!
Avatar 8:24pm spookcityusa:

best song of the set. this is the cat's pajamas.
Avatar 8:24pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Hello hyde! Good to see you. Two weeks ago there was none. this is the last of the year.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Re: berlin trilogy: Agreed Spook. Vigorously agreed
Avatar 8:25pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@spook: yea, this is probably my favorite track of this album
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Yeah, hyde, this is the last till 2016. glad to have you with us!
Avatar 8:26pm hyde:

@Sadhu i'm soooo confused. guess i missed an hour watching a hong kong musical. could have been worse.
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

and sorry for the misunderstanding!
Avatar 8:27pm hyde:

haha, i assume that somehow it's all my fault
Avatar 8:27pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@hyde: haha. well, glad you made it for the last 30+ minutes!
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

definitely 30+
Avatar 8:31pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@flash: id do the (Y) thing if i could in here. ill go for the old school *thumbs up*
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

you guys: this track is blows my mind!
Avatar 8:31pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@hyde: btw, did you chekc out the mix i sent you a link to last time i was in here yet?
Avatar 8:33pm hyde:

@Sadhu i've listened to some of it but not all of it. good stuff!
Avatar 8:34pm spookcityusa:

gotta bail for this haus hannukah thing, but thanks for introducing me to george cates, & great great great show amigo!
Avatar 8:35pm Sadhu Sadhu:

@Hyde: I love that mix. probably one of my top 3 mix discoveries this year. Glad you enjoyed it!
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

hate to see you leave muchacho, but loved to have you here! Happy Channukah
Avatar 8:38pm Sadhu Sadhu:

Flash: This is from discover jungle shadows, or one of the other jungle shadow mixes, right? Such a nice tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Xavier Cugat always make think "chewy nougat." A pleasant association.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cougar Nougat.
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

@S.S: indeed!
@Doug: I too always dream of nougat Cugats
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

hello, rabbit!
Avatar 8:41pm hyde:

i never knew xavier cugat was a cartoonist until cool culinaria posted about this menu he drew last week: coolculinaria.com...
Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

he was also married to Charo
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

yeah, many of his album covers feature his own drawings! there;s a video of him out there drawing his own caricature, with his chihuahua in hand, on some TV show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that cartoon reminds me of Marx Bros. titles...also a pleasant association...
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

More George Cates, because I want to hear it again before I pack it up tomorrow
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

i've seen those cugat album covers for years, and i just never realized he drew them
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

his drawings do look a lot like the Marx caricatures! I've noticed that as well. I have a book of his 78s with this great drawing of his sort of on-display in my explorers room. he's swinging maracas with wild abandon
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

wow, this george cates really is something
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

it's so perfect, like a well-cut sonic gem
Avatar 8:49pm coelacanth:

someone mentioned the surfmen earlier- i don't know why;
but want to say i only know one song by them..."fire goddess" which i've known since childhood from the "music to scare hell out of your neighbors" record.
it's extraordinary and i don't know why i never sought out more of their music.
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

that record is the first time I heard the Surfmen as well! they have two really good records that are pretty essential exotica... i played a lot from both of them on a show a while back. i'll check which one it was
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

aha it was : April 30, 2015: Provocatif and Other Exotic Motifs

Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

ok, one more after this and then on to new business
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

ugh, i just love how they use the scratcher on this record
Avatar 8:56pm coelacanth:

i listened to 2 of the 4 archives of "Bibliothèque Exotique" that i didn't hear "live" just a few days ago. i enjoyed the shows but didn't pay much attention to the playlists.
Avatar 8:57pm coelacanth:

oh! i didn't see your post. Thanks! i'll check it out for sure!
Avatar 9:04pm coelacanth:

it's a good bet it would crack most of us up too!
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

heh, yeah, it's pretty funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Cuyat? Really? Wow, new(s) to me! I've been murdering the pronunciation for 35 years.
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

me too, man. the older you get, the more things you find out you've been saying wrong for decades. you never run out!
Avatar 9:13pm hyde:

but they always say Cu-gat in all those old Hollywood movies he's in as a bandleader!
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

i know! they always used to just pathologically anglicize all those latin pronunciations... there's that one Bing&Andrews Sisters track, "See ya in Bahia" where they just insist on pronouncing it Ba-HEE-ya, it always cracks me up. And sort of infuriates me
Avatar 9:15pm hyde:

i found out the other day that the guy who Mount Everest is named after actually pronounced his name Eeh-vrest, but just try saying that to anybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Doug Schulkind:

And he was called Coo-Got when he appeared with Abbe Lane on What's My Line. But what do they know?
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

i mean, I'm probably a little wrong on the pronunciation myself, and he definitely would have just rolled with all kinds of pronunciations. the truth, in the end, is both inaccessible and nonexistent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm melinda:

Love the cosmic Mexican-pre-Colombian stuff.
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

that's crazy about Everest! "but just try saying that to anybody" indeed
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

@ melinda: this record is NUTS
Avatar 9:20pm coelacanth:

i will say "eevrest" from now on!
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

that will be your albatross, C.!
Avatar 9:23pm hyde:

haha, vaya con dios, coelacanth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm melinda:

If you click the wikipedia link for the pronunciation of Cugat it takes you to a page about Catalan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm melinda:

No wonder we all mispronounce it, we don't speak Catalan.
Avatar 9:28pm hyde:

@melinda oh that's right, he was born in barcelona
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

I thought he was Brazilian for years, for some reason. Total Spaniard. So was Carmen Miranda, I think, though she immigrated much younger
Avatar 9:30pm Sadhu Sadhu:

I have to sign out guys. its 3:30 am here now. Thanks for a wonderful night all and good luck with your moving Flash!
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

dang, that harold arlen sure could write some tunes
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

g'night Sadhu!
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

it's a masterpiece!

goodnight Sadhu, we're closing down anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Doug Schulkind:

True, Doug.
Avatar 9:34pm ndbob:

Great way to put it Doug:)
Avatar 9:36pm Little Danny:

"Aggressively artificial" - YES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm melinda:

Happy trails, flash, and I hope your move goes smoothly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Thank you, Dr. Strap!
Avatar 9:37pm coelacanth:

so you're moving TO north carolina? that's where i always thought you were...i'm confused!
...but you need not reiterate; i'll listen to the archive anyway.

Thank you Evan and bon voyage, have a not-too-painful move and happy new year!
'night explorers!
Avatar 9:37pm hyde:

thanks Flash. see ya next year.
Avatar 9:38pm ndbob:

Good luck Evan!
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:
