I really love Farid's stuff. I don't have a lot of it, but his voice is so haunting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Gary:

Are you guys able to hear the noises Farid is making occasionally, sort of like Glenn Gould? It happens less in the more intense parts. You can't really hear it on the vinyl version, but whoever did the CD rerelease made it a bit more prominent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm

You can get the French pressing of this album in a vinyl-to-digital transfer on Snap Crackle & Pop's blog:snapcrackleandpops.blogspot.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm

I don't hate them. I would have to listen to more of their music to make an informed hatred of them and I don't wanna do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm

but I think they're one of those bands that are a sort of amalgam of other people's ideas who knew how to present it in bland, safe manner for mainstream people.

Maybe it's that Prince video, Dean?
  9:10pm
Dean:

Prince video? (Funny, but on another forum earlier today, a work-related one, I invoked Prince for reasons pertaining to authority control in cataloging and primary keys in relational database structure.)
Avatar 9:10pm

Don't get me started on that prince &^!!@$$(*.
I am ashamed to share a surname with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm

Haw! Actually, I do like Prince, I have to admit. But, then, I also lived in Minneapolis for 6 years in the 90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Gary:

Oh, and if you haven't figured it out, the track we're listening to now is the record you're seeing over there to the left. (The man in black is Abdel.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Doug Schulkind:

I'm pretty sure I've never heard a Radiohead song.
  9:14pm

I bet you have, Doug, and I bet it's "Creep," an early hit, before they were recognized as geniuses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Doug Schulkind:

Meanwhile, this Hafez performance is electrifying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Ike:

I didn't get Radiohead at all until I listened to a few of their mid-career or later albums all the way through. Oddly enough, the albums often add up to more than the sum of their parts. (DJ Bethany likes them too.) Still way over-hyped though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

coelacanth:

considering i haven't been able to catch your show at all in weeks, i feel lucky!
Avatar 9:29pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@ the time I thot - hey! - this Radiohead is like a U2 that doesn't suck
...'Optimistic' randomly coming from a car or truck on the street...
...but then - it was like : go FreeForm, & even an alternative to Alternative seems irrelevant...
I like Radiohead. Thom Yorke is apparently one of those hyper-aware persons - which makes the name 'Radiohead' appropriate. They Neuroticize themselves into excellence - which is the opposite of what many think Rock'n'Rolla is supposed to be all about - but Rules Schmules...

Gary - this is incredible. Like I said about Native American stuff on Rob Weisberrg's show: A different kind of Soul music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Gary:

I think it is only a matter of time before some enterprising reissue label puts together a Baligh Hamdi package of some kind
Avatar 9:32pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My thing w/ Prince is:
I am gobsmacked by his abilities to do - literally - *anything*
- but then - why I am okay w/ not owning *anything* by him? Blame MTV?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Gary:

Prince was -- at least for the first part of his career -- super over exposed. And while I loved those early albums, I also don't own any -- I just feel like I can do all those songs in my head. I'm kind of curious about all of the stuff I haven't heard, tho
Avatar 9:38pm
hyde:

i still own those early albums. i also went to see purple rain about 3 times the year it came out. (a couple were 99 cent wednesday shows at the calvin theater, but still)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
melinda:

I don't think it's weird to not own any Prince.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Gary:

Y'all know about the Purple Rain remake filmed in the Sahara, yeah?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
coelacanth:

yeah Rev, there are lots of folks who are close-minded to radiohead, like with the beatles, just because they got popular. meanwhile it's not "commercial" music at all. if anything they helped open the world up for many who would've decended further into commercial radio crap.
their first 2 albums were basic guitar rock, though a notch beyond their peers, so they got known; but if those 2 albums hadn't happened they would be okay with all those who think they're too cool,or pretend they're too sophisticated for it.
(ironic since it's far more sophisticated than lots of "cool" groups that get heavy wfmu airplay)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Gary:

Mr. Sahel Sounds made it: www.theguardian.com...
Avatar 9:43pm
hyde:

@Gary i'm dying to see that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Gary:

I appreciate what you're saying Coelacanth & RevRab ... but I don't think it's quite so black and white. I love the Beatles (altho, like Prince, I don't own any of the albums anymore -- can do it all in the head), but I have a *visceral* reaction to Radiohead. I think it may even come down to the guy's voice grating on me in a very deeply physical way. (Deeply Physical Way -- now there's an 80s song title for you)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Gary:

We think of pop music (and alt music is pop music, in the sense I'm thinking of) as being somehow objective (not the right word, but) -- so liking or disliking we tell ourselves is about semiotics and identity, kind of -- but there's a completely visceral component to it
  9:47pm
Dean:

Thom Yorke's voice, yes. This was the topic of yesterday's discussion, too. I can't bear the whiny bellowing.
Avatar 9:47pm
hyde:

ok, got to cut out a couple minutes early. thanks Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
coelacanth:

yeah his voice isn't wonderful.
...but i wasn't saying that everyone who dislikes them do for the reason i said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Gary:

Night, Hyde!
  9:48pm
Dean:

I confuse him with the Coldplay guy, too. That can't be good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
coelacanth:

i can barely stand dinosaur jr. because of his voice. i can't seem to get past it,even though people (wfmu) tells me it's cool to like it!
Avatar 9:51pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm a stone Beatlemaniac - they had me @ the Cartoons in my toddlerhood.
Just no getting round an aesthetic distaste for a voice. Yorke said he was working w/ Bjork - & he broke emotionally - & she told him that was very *selfish* - & he acknowledged she was right. In Pop/Rawk - it's as much about distinctive Sounds as Musically Technical attributes. Yorke has a *distinctive* voice: he sounds like himself - & is expressive - & that's usually half the battle. People often say this about voices in Pop Music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Gary:

^True
Avatar 9:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...that they just don't like a voice...)
  9:54pm
Dean:

Well, yeah, except when he sounds like the Coldplay guy, or vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Gary:

Only three minutes of this awesomeness left, speaking of voices
Avatar 9:56pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...also: maybe the 1990s are exactly too close & too far away to be 'cool' nostalgia yet?? (It used to take 20 years)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
coelacanth:

i'm pretty sure coldplay modelled themselves after radiohead.
...well,i'm sure of it!
(except they're boring and not politically relevant)
