This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening, explorer WD!

Aye, Aye, Captain! Looking forward to some library.

And welcome all to the first Thursday show of my second year of Explorers Room. My first show ever was Jan. 15 2015. So begins year 2 of hopefully many more

evening Evan, Daydream everyone!

I was thinking of downloading all your shows and somehow converting them to MP3.

Hello Evan, Bob, Walking D.!

evening Bob!

@WD: it can be done. I think my sister did it once
Avatar 7:02pm
Flash Strap:

Ah, hello explorer Melinda!
Avatar 7:03pm
ndbob:

Hey there Melinda!
Avatar 7:04pm
Flash Strap:

how are we all this fine evening?
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

This track isn't library I know, but it's in a similar conceptual vein and I've just been meaning to play it for a while now.
Avatar 7:05pm

I'm doing well - finally got my Blazer back - aftera couple weeks.

Explorer Hyde in the room!
Avatar 7:06pm
Walking Daydream:

Sounds like a slow dry cleaner, Bob.
  7:06pm
Dean:

The gif reminds me of the Sir Thomas Beecham comment about harpsichords.
Avatar 7:06pm
Flash Strap:

what sort of Blazer we talkin' here, bob?
Avatar 7:06pm
ndbob:

a Chevy SUV
Avatar 7:07pm
Flash Strap:

I want to know what you know about what Sir Thomas Beecham thinks about harsichords, Dean
Avatar 7:07pm
ndbob:

SUVs were necessary in North Dakota
  7:07pm
Dean:

"The sound of a harpsichord - two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm."
Avatar 7:08pm
Flash Strap:

ah, I too was picturing a men's jacket, bob, but I had a feeling I was wrong
Avatar 7:08pm
ndbob:

Great quote there Dean
Avatar 7:08pm
Flash Strap:

@Dean: that's wonderful. Makes me wish this was a harsichord-themed show all of a sudden
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
melinda:

I was imagining a suit coat as well.
  7:09pm
Dean:

Not entirely an exaggeration, either, which explains the charm of the harpsichord.
Avatar 7:10pm
ndbob:

Trying to remember when I had that kind of blazer - been a while
Avatar 7:11pm
Flash Strap:

it is such a strange, compelling sound
Avatar 7:12pm
ndbob:

Yep Evan
Avatar 7:12pm
Flash Strap:

I remember the MFA in boston had a room of archaic instruments, including a whole bevy of harpsichords & harpsichordesques with ornate scenic paintings on the flip-top, whatever that's called. What an instrument
  7:13pm
Dean:

Two records for when you do a harpsichord show, both performances on the Finlandia label by Jukka Tiensuu: The Fantastic Harpsichord and The Exuberant Harpsichord.
Avatar 7:13pm
hyde:

@Evan heh, i know that room

@Hyde, when I was in boston and with the SMFA I used to spend endless hours in that museum.

great show last night Gary!
  7:16pm
Dean:

One of the best, because most rare, live shows I've ever attended was Ton Koopman doing a Byrd recital on the harpsichord in my boss's living room in the Hollywood Hills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm

Congrats on entering your 2nd year of show, Flash!
Avatar 7:19pm

I second that Melinda and Evan!

Library music is one of those well-kept secrets of music history. It's like spelunking, you almost have to know a spelunker (and very well at that) to get a map to a cave
Avatar 7:27pm
hyde:

library music is a daunting thicket
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

Indeed. I try to help where I can, but I am hardly qualified to be a guide myself
Avatar 7:28pm
Walking Daydream:

This one is definitely like Barbarella or Flash Gordon.
  7:28pm
Dean:

Compounding the cool factor, a couple years later I worked at the Bodleian Library at Oxford for a summer. One day, after walking out of Blackwell's Bookstore on Broad St., I spied Koopman standing across the street. I approached him and mentioned having heard him in Hollywood. He replied that he was playing the Sheldonian Theatre that evening, so I attended that concert, too.
Avatar 7:30pm
Flash Strap:

that's pretty amazing, Dean
Avatar 7:31pm
ndbob:

wow - quite a story Dean
  7:31pm

Still have to pinch myself sometimes. Good times.

Sweet groove here
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, the prog. percussion LPs are pretty monstrous as far as grooves go
Avatar 7:40pm
Flash Strap:

I think, but am not sure, that this is actually the same Eddie Warner
Avatar 7:41pm
Flash Strap:

HOT drums
Avatar 7:47pm
Flash Strap:

This stuff is pretty relentless! Don't worry, we'll get into meandering, formless nonsense very soon
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

This LP was a split with Georges Teperino, aka Nino Nardini. He's everywhere!
  7:52pm
Dean:

Dig this! Compare bit.ly/1KtKLo7 with bit.ly/23hV89W. Same image, related artists, different albums!
Avatar 7:55pm
Flash Strap:

ah haha! I've actually noticed that at one point myself! recycled stock artwork is a minor fascination of mine
  7:56pm
Dean:

Not surprising, I suppose, given your interest in library music. Do you know the guy who has a kickstarter (or similar) campaign for his book of retouched stock photos? It's a hoot.
Avatar 7:56pm
ndbob:

Song poem labels did that all the time - same covers for multiple LPs
Avatar 7:57pm

image by Pierre-Laurent Brenot, no less. ooh la la.

hello Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:06pm

Hello C-fish!
Avatar 8:08pm
Flash Strap:

That last track, which I said was L'Orange, is actually L'Orage. there are many typos in the library sharing world, so it's good I double-checked
Avatar 8:12pm
Flash Strap:

oh, also! a belated fare-thee-well to Bob!
Avatar 8:13pm
Flash Strap:

The cover for this one is a delight: cdn.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:17pm
hyde:

that is slightly frightening
Avatar 8:18pm
Flash Strap:

i know, right? that weird stick body, the way the face is sort of wrong...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
coelacanth:

- the stuff of nightmares.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
melinda:

This is nice.
Avatar 8:20pm
Flash Strap:

there's something so viscerally weird about disney knock-offs. DuBuffet would have a lot to say about it, the destruction of the face as a realization of death
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

those "Be My Baby" drums
Avatar 8:25pm
hyde:

now just how are you supposed to crack a safe to this tune
Avatar 8:26pm
Flash Strap:

the really weird stuff is coming up soon
Avatar 8:26pm
Flash Strap:

@Hyde: carefully, soulfully, while popping the fingers of your non-dominant hand

dude, hawksworth is my jam!

  8:31pm
spookcityusa:

hey man, very very nice so far!
Avatar 8:32pm
Flash Strap:

thanks man
Avatar 8:43pm
hyde:

that bed music was the weirdest version of "my old kentucky home" i've ever heard
Avatar 8:44pm
Flash Strap:

oh, I know!
Avatar 8:46pm
Flash Strap:

This stuff is so weird and expressionistic
Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

interesting that this was his idea of what black American music sounded like
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

if that's indeed what the title is even alluding to: perhaps he intends to convey some aspect of the black experience, or perhaps some other thing I can't quite confer from the title
Avatar 8:54pm
Flash Strap:

it's certainly very gamelan in some respects
Avatar 8:54pm
Flash Strap:

but also very trainlike
Avatar 8:55pm
northguineahills:

I forgot to say hello, been here back and forth since 8. Thanks!
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

well, hello NGH, glad to have had you all this time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
coelacanth:

the skeleton is totally out of time, but is really into the music.
...as a child there was a large (gradually toward giant) hole in the wall right by my bed and i used to play the lathwork.
Avatar 9:01pm
Flash Strap:

wow – you WERE that skeleton.

There's some real spittoon and radiator sounds on this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
Doug Schulkind:

This is making me enjoyful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
coelacanth:

some were "dead", but others would make a subtle "boing" kind of sound -and those each had different tones.
Avatar 9:03pm
Flash Strap:

I though some of this stuff might be up your drummer's alley, Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
coelacanth:

...but between that and the old radiator i'd be on the radiator!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
Drummer Sally:

I like it, too!
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

Ho ho ho

that's the laugh i made when i understood Drummer Sally. Full-on HOHOHO
Avatar 9:07pm
Flash Strap:

@C: no spittoon for you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
coelacanth:

judging by the 2 sets that i've been here for i guess that i missed some amazingness that came before...and i'm psyched to here all this at home on a good stereo over the weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
coelacanth:

Flash, i'll use that for accents- from the outside,if you don't mind!
Avatar 9:11pm
Flash Strap:

fine with me. no sloshing on the floor, even if it is a skeleton's flophouse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm

(and - can you assure me it's not a chamber pot?)
Avatar 9:12pm

aha. I cannot.
