...and from Braxton's Composition Notes: "This is a big band music that relates to the toughness of the big band era (spirit)—as a forum to 'shout' about the strength of positive creativity and (growth). Composition No. 51 is conceived as an offering to and from those 'golden moments'—offered through and from that continuum. Here is a forum to 'get down' on—'either play or leave the room!' I have dedicated this work to [blank]"
I remember seeing CT at a now defunct in the Village...he had gotten a fabulous write up in the Times, stressing how it was no longer a sonic assault, he now played soft, quiet sections as well. Well, there was a line around the block, I thought I surely wouldn't get to see him, but the line kept moving, and we got seats. What I realized after a few minutes was, while he indeed did add softer sections to the music, THEY WERE JUST AS DISSONANT AS THE LOUDER SECTIONS, and the reason I got seated was that most people sat for 5 minutes, then got up and left! (was good for me, though).
My fave CT audience experience was seeing him at the Village Vanguard. Guy at next table turns to me and says, "I read about this in the New York Times. I love piano, but my friend isn't so sure. Is this going to be like Billy Joel?"
Hand to the holy book of your choice!
Back in the days when the NY Times could really get you an audience and even draw in the bridge and tunnel folks.
@Jeff J Saw the otherworldly Bill Evans at Ronnie Scotts around 1980. There were no numb nuts in the audience craving BJ that I heard. Jazz is a many layered joy, bit like those chocs.

Figures, I find a show I really like and it disappears shortly after. Always the last on my block to know.
Some titles are so perfect and somehow so inevitiable, you can't believe they are real. You believe you must have come up with it yourself in some fever dream and always thought it would be a great song title. But no, there it is, on an actual record.
@doctorjazz: Dogon A.D. got a wonderful reissue from International Phonograph a few years ago: internationalphonographinc.com... I didn't think they were limited editions, but the Amazon CD price would seem to indicate that it was indeed a limited run.
i need to increase my Noah Howard repertoire. i've had an increasing-in-tiny-increments knowledge of him forever; need to step it up! i have no excuse.
i'll check both of those out.
Alice C caught all sorts of flak at the time for overdubbing strings onto these performances - but we like 'em. Lets you hear John's playing through a different lens.
